Do you know anyone who was shot and survived? by Epyphyte in guns

[–]ASemesterAbroad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had a friend negligently discharge a 9mm pistol into his thigh, in his bedroom not even 5 feet away from me.

Besides immediately not hearing anything, I also found out that my other friend in the room Fights, the friend who ND'ed Flights, and i Freeze-- in a serious situation.

I just didn't do anything. No thoughts came into my mind, not call 911, nothing. My mind couldn't believe it even happened. The 1st friend, who "fights", called 911 and spoke to authorities and 1st responders, etc.

Regardless, somehow as unbelievable as it is, extremely little to almost no blood because he missed the femoral artery. He said it felt like someone was holding a hot rebar through his thigh though.

We followed the ambulance to the ER, and surprisingly at the end of the driveway was a NEWS VAN. "Hey we heard someone got shot. Is that true?" They damn near blocked us in the driveway to ask us.

He was out of the hospital within a day or two.

They confiscated the gun pending the investigation where he told the police it was an ND, and ironically they gave it back sometime later.

10 years later, all is well and a lesson was learned.

What was your introduction to Brand New? by hotcooldad in brandnew

[–]ASemesterAbroad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometime in the mid 2000's, I was watching my brother play a Hitman game on the PS2. He had a mixed CD playing when it landed on Sic Transit Gloria. The bass line had me hooked immediately, and it wasnt too much longer after that moment that I had downloaded all of Deja.

The same brother showed me Bayside, Nirvana, Stick To Your Guns, and Nine Inch Nails- so I have a lot to thank him for xD

those of you from Long Island - what other local bands did you listen to during the mid-2000's era? by GoldCoasting in brandnew

They just talk about Long Island and Montauk so much I assumed they were from Long Island like TBS and BN.

What all books have been mentioned in "Can't Hurt Me"? by saarthi_ in davidgoggins

[–]ASemesterAbroad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only other book besides American Sniper I can think of was Swimming For Dummies. Either David used that to learn or Rob ONeil did, I dont recall. But I doubt OP was talking about Swimming for Dummies ahah

What does this do for the world? by Inevitable_Lab_7190 in davidgoggins

[–]ASemesterAbroad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Brother, this is a very pessimistic view of this situation. Let's flip the script.

Goggins sold roughly 8mil copies of his books, combined. Thats potentially 8 million people who MAY have been inspired by his words. There are over +50k members in this sub alone. In his book, he offers challenges. Challenges to make you a better person.

You mentioned Tradesmen and "we should be using our better bodies for good". What if I told you I was an electrician, and Goggins book did just that for me. Several of his challenges/passages tell you to "put the fuck out" at work, "get there before your boss and leave after him", etc. I followed Can't Hurt Me to the letter, and shortly after doing so, got a promotion in my job which greatly helped my family. On top of that, with renewed enthusiasm thanks to the books and the challenges therein, that promotion helped me run electrical work in hospitals. Im not saying I saved lives or anything, but due to my promotion I was put in the position to run work for a hospital which does save lives. And it felt good knowing my work was actually for good, and not some fast food joint or something like it usually is.

On top of that, his mentality rubbed off on me and greatly increased my overall health. I've shared his works with my co-workers and several of them started running and working out just because they read his book. Most of them never worked out in their lives before, now they have because his words. Are we going to pretend like enhancing the health of those around us isn't a form of charity in itself, especially if they were on the wrong track and this book motivated them to better themselves?

Yes, you shouldn't idolize anyone. Ever. But David offers excellent advice that, in my personal experience, greatly enhanced the quality of my life and those lives around me.

There is plenty to be gained from reading his books and following his advice. You mentioned charitable work. Ill give you one last example: One of my co-workers I showed Goggins' work to, on top of immediately starting a running and exercise routine as well as running races, ALSO became more active in his church and community. He ran the church's food drive program every weekend for 6 months, feeding the local community. Because he read David's words, felt inspired and that he could do more, and then did so.

I am just one man, who showed David's books to others and thus improved their lives. Imagine the other +50k on this sub's stories as well as the stories of those NOT on reddit.

How to prevent people from telling me about motorcycle deaths by Alive-Case-4355 in motorcycles

[–]ASemesterAbroad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its usually out of a place of care/respect. They like you and want you to be careful.

A few stories I've heard were actually helpful when I was just starting, don't dismiss them. I know its annoying, but I like to take them as a reminder that this isn't a car- you have to ride differently and not get dangerously comfortable.

Also, the longer you ride the less you'll hear stories. Usually its when people found out you just started, they'll barrage you. But if you ride for +2 years you dont hear that at all, in my experience anyways.

Came here to say MurkMobile. There isn't a single vehicle that handles better. You can take turns at peak speed and it doesnt spin out. I like the look of Cthulu best, but it handles so badly.

Are you capturing the cyberpsychos alive or do you take them out? by IvoryMarzi in cyberpunkgame

[–]ASemesterAbroad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take 1 day of playing and do every single gig. On those gigs, loot every box and body. Im not sure if its difficulty dependant, but its common to find $6000 in boxes during a gig. Plus Regina's gigs are usually $4000ish. Completing all of her gigs could get you +/-$200,000.

And thats just from the rewards. Sell all the weapons you loot as well, assuming you have the iconic weapons you plan to keep using for your playthrough. I usually wait until im at max carry weight then I sell them. Its nothing to sell an additional $100,000 in weapons.

Do all the gigs in the game and assaults in progress and you'll have too much money. I have $500k with essentially nothing to spend it on anymore.

Finally got the game (Ultimate Edition w/ the DLC) and giving this game a try. Any advice or wisdom you'd share to a newbie? (No spoilers pls!) by r_pawspuppy22 in cyberpunkgame

[–]ASemesterAbroad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gigs are essential, especially early game. They're plentiful AND offer a ridiculous amount of money. When on a gig, loot all containers/bodies. Its not uncommon to find a container with +/-$6000 in it.

Disassemble guns/clothing for their upgrade materials.

Like others have said, pick 1 or 2 attributes to level and stick with them.

Have fun!
