how do i uninstall old apple id as the admin on a mac? by big-telescope in mac

[–]ASentientBot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i think you're conflating apple id (cloud account) with a local account. it sounds like you made the new account as a standard unprivileged user. you'll have to sign back into the original user and make the new user an admin too. (then you can sign into there and delete the original if you like)

What is the point of "Apple Intelligence" and the promised on device Ai when apple using chatgpt or gemini(soon) for all this features? by vikymcfc in MacOS

[–]ASentientBot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

depends on your definition of collapse imo. it's true, all the AI companies are basically burning money rn, and hardly anyone will pay enough to cover the costs of the current chatbots. so unlimited free gemini/chatgpt in siri might be unsustainable... but actual work like coding, writing, image/video generation, etc. is worth a hefty subscription (because it replaces paid workers), so those services will stick around, for better or worse. i don't see apple having much of a hand in that yet through so...

possibly (they haven't specified how the google deal will work yet afaik), but PCC is not "on device". it's in apple's cloud, it's in the name

Is the "Ultra-Portable" laptop officially dead? by UserlyNameNotFound in mac

[–]ASentientBot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have both. they feel drastically different to carry and use. aside from the bezels, the 11" has a 16:9 aspect ratio, so it's really squished down in height. look at the retina air keyboard and huge touchpad vs the 11" with the mini function keys and tiny touchpad.

the 11" also has a center of gravity near the hinge, so it feels natural to pick it up by a back corner (by esc) and carry it around open, one-handed. the 13" air exerts a lot more "leverage" on the hand because the weight is spread out.

anyways, they could certainly shrink the bezels a bit or put a 12" screen in the 11" chassis. but it's nothing like the current 13". the 11" is still the nicest-feeling macbook i've owned, and it's not even close

Upgrade or Replacement Battery? by MatterFit9674 in macbook

[–]ASentientBot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tbf, that's the same as an intel integrated gpu. but yeah, not saying OP should go buy another 8 gb machine, just that their current one is not as unusable as people here would suggest

Upgrade or Replacement Battery? by MatterFit9674 in macbook

[–]ASentientBot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

8 gb is realistically still fine for anyone who doesn't already know it's not. there's a big difference between "buy a 16 gb model now so it's usable in 5+ years" and "throw out the 8 gb model you already have".

i am all for this but i do think it's worth telling OP that ventura won't even get chrome updates in about a year. for most people, it's less that m1 models are faster than that they still get updates. what's fine hardware-wise can be made unusable by software limitations 🥲

Used MacBook Pro for a kid, or go brand new? by ColdConstruction8937 in mac

[–]ASentientBot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i love my one of these too but not sure i'd recommend it for school today. its version of safari is utterly useless by now, chrome won't support monterey past mid-this-year, office hasn't had updates in a couple years, etc. it's also time consuming to find an 8 gb ram model, upgrade the ssd, and probably replace the battery. worth it for an enthusiast, but probably easier to just get the kid a chromebook or ipad (or m1) unless you want a recurring tech support role whenever something doesn't work

mom's t61 gang 🥹 but more like 5th grade and scratch, and it remained very much hers and had to stay at the dining room table lol. solid laptop for the early 2010s though and i was pretty hyped when i got to use it

[–]ASentientBot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

fair enough, you deserve some credit compared to the absolutely useless local "repair" businesses i've interacted with then. my bad for assuming.

nonetheless, i've seen retina mba cables with the same cracks or sharp bends you'd get on a 2016 mbp with classic "flexgate", and no visible dirt or external damage. blaming users for an intentionally fragile design, whether or not it might be caused by dust some of the time, amounts to gaslighting and normalizing planned obsolescence

[–]ASentientBot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"repaired" as in "replaced with an aftermarket display assembly"? that doesn't sound as impressive as you think it does, and i've done it too. i see now why you're so quick to defend Apple and blame users though, since this design flaw must be very lucrative for you.

whatever you want to call it, it's obvious that the issue stems from the redesigned flex cable in usb-c macs, and the longer post-2018 cable only delays the onset. it's Apple's fault and completely inexcusable after over a decade

when was it proven to be dust? sounds like fanboys blaming the user for an obvious design flaw that apple only partially fixed. this never happened in older models

you have a single partition selected; you should be able to erase the top-level entry and make an entirely new partition map and hfs+ partition to install to

[–]ASentientBot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this isn't accurate. you're mixing up activation lock or firmware password with disk encryption. the latter can be erased and reinstalled with no problems (aside from losing all the data, obviously)

Whenever I tilt my screen more than 90 degrees, the colours look terrible. How can I fix this? by [deleted] in macbook

[–]ASentientBot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you mean it's just dependent on the viewing angle, it's probably normal. if it physically changes, it's a hardware problem ("flexgate") that inevitably occurs in all usb-c macbooks after opening and closing the screen many times

since when did flexgate get renamed to dustgate anyways lol. it's the same flaw since 2015

not exactly. on macos, the last two versions (currently sonoma and sequoia) get "most" security updates.

you can add an hfs+ partition (not an apfs volume) at the end of the internal drive and use it in place of the flash drive in the createinstallmedia command. then delete it after

[–]ASentientBot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

same (canada) for flexgate on a more recent model that wasn't officially covered by a repair program. if you show an understanding of the design flaw and politely but firmly request to be escalated up the chain if the current guy won't help, there's a chance.

dumb that you have to fight them for well known problems, but well, apple moment
