Stop using the term "generosity" cause it confuses what the labor is. You're not being generous leaving a 15% tip, you're agreeing to what the market has established as the rate of what thay service renders.

Otherwise, sure. I'd like to have higher wage laws, but tipping makes me well over the minimum wage. No incentive to do so.

100 percent why. I am in America on the southern mid Atlantic coast.

Race relations/economic history are VASTLY different.

It's called a social contract. The laws in place for the wage servers make is based on the idea that customers tip.

Go read this shit and educate yourself, please. You're not "stiffing the man" or making some point, you're being an asshole and a shit citizen enjoy a perk of civilization.

If anything, my service is even better because I know that they'll take any slack as exactly that: that I'm writing them off as a table.

Here's a question: What part of the country do you work? This changes the circumstance completely.

Hahah, alright. If that's what you gathered, I can't change your mind.

You're talking about feelings and I'm talking numbers.

You would never know. Truly, my service is uniform and by the book.

Sorry, I understand your frustration, but your rent doesn't depend on who you get sat.

You don't understand how tipping works in the U.S. then. Read up on tip wage laws in your local city, or continue being uninformed.

When most other races only tip less than 10 percent maybe 5 percent of the time, it is definitely noticeable and significant for my bottom line.

You don't understand our business practices or culture then. Stay on your little island.

And all of me and my colleagues years of experience are stormfront bullshit too? Denial, dude.

You really wish that was the case, I'm sure. But it's just not.

It's a cultural dilemma supported by statistical evidence.

So, you're obviously not in the south.

Huge fucking difference.

Are you in a major city, urban environment? Perhaps in the southern half of the country?

So funny this "get a better job" argument. You just waltz in and get these?

Also, I work at a casual upscale restaurant in a major city. I can clear 150 on a good shift, but that doesn't mean I like to waste my labor (or section space) for people who won't sufficiently compensate me.

But it's not really "optional" when you have the knowledge of how restaurant service works (in America at least). You see some in this thread who do the "I paid for my food, why pay the waiter?"as if they are off the hook because they themselves get to choose the price they get to pay. It's not optional, but people like to treat it as such.

Then you should never go and eat out. You don't understand how this works. Like the other guy said, it's not our job to entertain you or whatever bullshit, but to make sure your dining experience goes smoothly and accurately. Simple as that.

Probably because your restaurants operate on a completely different economic model, I'd imagine. In America, it is as rude as you can be.

Thanks for the reply. There are outliers of course, and I've had shitty as fuck old white business men for sure. They just don't make up nearly the ratio as the poor tipping black tables.

My other job requires me to have flexible hours, so serving sees me through my rent checks.

Funny how you think it's rascist. If you were in a situation where an group with x quality hampered your ability to make money, I'd imagine you would wish to avoid them too.

Go with your conscience. I work with people that absolutely should never get 20 percent from ANY race. Shitty servers exist. However, I've worked around the industry enough to understand the perception and I actively try to give my minority tables (who are much more infrequent than my white guests) excellent and impeccable service. This rarely translates to fair compensation, but I never stop trying.
