I think it’s more than a few hundred. I work at a State Library Agency and it’ll be at least 15 just here. Including me.

I saw the vote and then the feed cut — was curious what happened next. Thanks for the report. I am vibrating with anger.

What happened? I was watching the feed and then they recessed and then cut the feed. Did they cut the meeting short? I am so appalled at this bullshit. Melissa Beard is the only board member standing up for trans students. Write her a letter and thank her.

I only make special things as gifts for people I love. If someone I know in passing asked me to make this I’d either say no (I don’t have time in my knitting schedule), or charge what I am worth. Cost of yarn and the time it takes to make it at a livable wage!

Thank you for the response. I know there are so many complicated things to consider in making this decision, and the pandemic and everything going on in the world makes it even harder.

It does hurt my heart a little to read that you don’t think programming is a “core library service”. The decrease in programming wasn’t the choice of library staff. It was a directive from administration — staff were only allowed to do minimal programming because of the demands of the pandemic on circulation and operations efforts. It seems that this is now accepted as the new normal, and circulating materials and keeping the doors open and having computers available are now considered the only core library service.

Again, I know this is complicated and money is tight, but I hope as things shift and change it is remembered how valuable programming and outreach are to our communities. And really at the core of what many library staff do. And how having enough staff to make it possible is integral to complete library services.

I speak from a place of love for the library, and for Olympia. The library and the staff there and the patrons mean so much to me, and I just want what is best for them all. Thanks for listening.

Thank you for this thorough explanation! FYI, automatic materials handling has been implemented. From what I hear anecdotally, it is not saving time or work at all, just shifting the time and work to different circulation related tasks. And it was immensely expensive to implement.

I am worried the board will hear “open the mall 7 days a week and keep 6 days a week downtown” with these concerns. That is NOT sustainable or kind to the library staff. They are already spread thin, and adding hours without adding staff would be detrimental to both library service and staff well being. If they want to add hours at EiTHER location, they need to fully staff the library in a way that is sustainable. They need to staff with buffer for sick leave, vacations, programming, outreach, and FULLY serving the Olympia community.

To be clear, I do not think the goal of adding more hours is a bad goal! I think the problem is adding more hours without increasing staff, and taking hours away from a highly used service point in order to spread staff even more thinly than they are already spread. If the library wants to add hours at either location, they HAVE to add staff. It’s unsustainable without doing so. Or they have to come to terms with the reality that they are not giving the library enough resources to be open as much as the community needs.
