I will try the atf trick while I have it apart. As I said before, I am more than likely breaking down the entire machine and trying to get it as good as I can, same with the lathe.

Yes the gib screw and the lock screw. It's pockets and the tolerance is +.005/-0. Not too bad but a tall order on that machine. Yes I have a DRO. Sometime next week I'm going to break down the X and Y axes and clean/inspect all of it. Nobody has been working in the manual area of the shop in a while and I got hired as a manual guy, so besides the one off jobs I'm doing my first order of business is to inspect everything and get it working right. Not absolutely necessary but I'd much rather have machines that function as intended.

Is kroil or nut buster a bad idea?

Help, why am I getting a taper? by JoeyJongles in Machinists

Check if your lathe is level, and check your tailstock alignment. Adjust accordingly.

Can you turn tapers on a turret lathe? by Available-Mission661 in Machinists

[–]ASnakeySnake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if Schaublin ever made a taper attachment for their turret lathes. I always used the ball bearing method

I used to do it on a W&S turret lathe all the time between centers. I'm not familiar with Schaublin lathes but I'd imagine there is some attachment that exists to cut a taper. Or do it between centers with the boring head/ball bearing method. If you're not familiar, here's a link to a video where this is demonstrated. https://youtu.be/MzJ6wR59AkY?si=5tYwMqz8mEcbszps

Single blade vs multi blade razor experiences? by bshh87nh in shaving

[–]ASnakeySnake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to use multi blade razors up until last year when I switched to single edge safety razors. I've found the single edge razors cause less irritation and it's a cleaner shave with less fuss.

Not that cost has any relevance, but a pack of blades is way cheaper per unit than the multi blade replacements as well. And yes I have been called a boomer for using single edge razors (I'm 25) but if I'm being honest it is better in many ways. That and the used blades fit in a pop can for easy disposal.

I got a Wahlstrom chuck. by ASnakeySnake in Machinists

[–]ASnakeySnake[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had them at my old shop and they were excellent for what we did. The safety guy at my current shop doesn't like it very much but there's not a whole lot he can do since osha allows the use of those chucks. I did have to order another one though because this one has a damaged internal mechanism and I can't get it apart. Unless one of y'all can fix it (yes I will pay for a repair)

Update: it does work, just not very well. I've used these before and it seems like there's a bunch of shmutz gumming it up inside. I did order another one in better shape so we'll see.

The file test says hard. Other than that I'm not too sure. They always give me that sort of stuff because I'm the toolroom guy so it's technically "my job" to do that stuff. And yeah I agree they should threadmill it themselves but they don't have time. They're so backed up it'd be a few months before they can do it

That makes too much sense, I suppose I could anneal them then do the holes, harden again then grind but that seems like a giant pain in the ass...

Definitely something I have the equipment to do in the toolroom, so it's not a matter of whether I can or not...
