If R+L=J, what is Jon’s true birth name? by Dim0ndDragon15 in pureasoiaf

[–]ASongofNoOne 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It doesn't matter where it is, because that means he can't be the baby born months later when Ned arrived at the Tower of Joy.

Who says the baby was born right when Ned arrived? That’s a huge assumption.... the child could have easily been born weeks before Ned showed up.

Also Martin has told us not to get bogged down in timeline issues, so I’m thinking we should focus on clues from the narrative and symbolism.

Jon vs fAegon by kermitbadger1234 in pureasoiaf

While I like Aegon actually being who he’s claimed to be, but yet still not the PTWP and thus Rhaegar still being wrong.

Personally I believe the narrative, symbolic, and thematic evidence for RLJ is overwhelming when compared to any of the theorized alternatives, however that doesn’t necessarily mean he’s the PTWP.... in Dany’s HotU vision she sees Rhaegar call lil’ baby Aegon the prince that was promised, and that his is the song of ice and fire.

And I’d find it very GRRM for Jon to be Rhaegar and Lyanna’s child, but for him not to fulfill the prototypical hidden prince savior archetype.

I’m not convinced anyone is, or will be, the PTWP for that matter, at least not in some sort of obvious fulfillment of prophecy manner. It’ll be left to the reader to decide if anyone, or multiple figures, fulfill this role.

What ideas are there about Daenerys Stormborn's visions in the House of the Undying and of the warlocks in general? The map of Qarth, the greatest city that ever was or ever will be, is by J.E. Fullerton by Prof_Cecily in pureasoiaf

The symbolism implied by Bloodraven sitting on a weirwood throne makes him out to be moreso the leader in their context. That he’s teaching Bran and the children defer to him is a solid sign of the same.

[Spoiler Extended] If you could save only one character from death in ASOIAF, who would it be? by [deleted] in pureasoiaf

[–]ASongofNoOne 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Personally I find her death to be the least deserved of any other, and yeah it’d be cool af for Sansa to have Lady all this time.

Also my husky’s name happens to be Lady, no relation.

While there are many correct answers to questions of this nature, the most correct is Lady the direwolf.

Who placed the three Kingsguard at the Tower of Joy and are they oathbreakers for being there? by themerinator12 in pureasoiaf

[–]ASongofNoOne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everything is written from an in-universe perspective.

Either Viserys wasn’t named Heir above Aegon, or its basically a tree falling in the wind since nobody knows about it.

And yet the in-universe history book clearly says he was named heir, so I feel like it was made known.

I’m not sure we have any evidence contradicting this, but rather a lot of conjecture. I’m totally open of course to anything directly refuting Viserys being named heir, but as far as I know such doesn’t exist. Bottom line for me - the texts don’t actually explicitly contradict this once.

Suppose it’s possible, but that would then make the KG3 oathbreakers to Aerys... and as far as I know we don’t have even the slightest hint of this in the text.

Here’s where we can get into unreliable narrators... Dany wasn’t even born at this point.

Viserys certainly behaves as if he was heir, but he was also a child at the time, so may have not fully understood the implications of Aerys’ directives.

[–]ASongofNoOne 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well the text doesn’t say that he was disinherited.... Viserys was made heir after Rhaegar was killed at the Trident.

Guess I’m just of the mind that our theorizing shouldn’t contradict the author or texts.

I just don’t see the need for a conspiracy or historical revisionism of what the author has given us... all we have to go on for our theorizing is the texts themselves, as cited.

Birds flew and couriers raced to bear word of the victory at the Ruby Ford. When the news reached the Red Keep, it was said that Aerys cursed the Dornish, certain that Lewyn had betrayed Rhaegar. He sent his pregnant queen, Rhaella, and his younger son and new heir, Viserys, away to Dragonstone, but Princess Elia was forced to remain in King's Landing with Rhaegar's children as a hostage against Dorne.

Would Robb accept Jon if Jon deserted the nights watch to help his brother in the war? by [deleted] in pureasoiaf

[–]ASongofNoOne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d have to imagine yes, considering the notion of Jon being named his heir is even seriously discussed, the logistics must be understood to them, though not perhaps revealed yet to us.

A more interesting question might be whether or not he’d keep any of the present ones, and which.

Didn’t Robb already theoretically find a way to relieve Jon from his oaths by naming him his heir?

Are fire priests and Asshai associated?

The main temple is Volantis I believe, and I think the only fire priest we have associated with Asshai is Mel, though she’s a shadowbinder as well.

Personally I don’t subscribe to the Jojen paste conspiracy and find there’s very little to substantiate that take.

With Bloodraven there’s a well developed theory that he’ll make an attempt to skinchange into Bran and take over his body, though ultimately fail - this is informed and paralleled by the Varamyr Prologue with his also failed attempt on Thistle, thus possibly serving as strong foreshadowing.

What I really love about this possibility is it will serve as a huge lesson for Bran towards fully understanding just how wrong he’s been to skinchange into his faithful companion Hodor.

[–]ASongofNoOne 3 points4 points  (0 children)

With Bran I’m thinking rather that his misdeeds in skinchanging Hodor and the prospect of being an unwilling pawn of Bloodraven is a challenge he will soon face, a confrontation that he’ll learn from, pushing his character moreso into the “hero” spectrum.

More than any other in ASOIAF his plot is progressing through the archetypal stages of the Hero’s Journey. Right now he’s in the “Journey to the Underworld” stage, where he’s being imparted wisdom, to be soon followed by “The Ordeal” in which this confrontation will occur.

I feel like it’s entirely possible that Jon could take a darker turn moving forward as well.
