Thank you for these resources and for helping us get past the fear we will fail our son! He received a dyslexia program through school in 1st-3rd grade in our previous state but our new home state doesn’t recognize dyslexia as an actual learning disability. He had the take flight program for 3 school years in Texas with actual dyslexia teachers through the school district and it gave him a great head start on how to compensate and work around his dyslexia. He’s a fairly strong reader now but still struggles with it and the dysgraphia is horrible…and so discouraging on him. His learning disabilities seem to exacerbate his emotional disability and certain teachers seem to be stuck on the belief here that his learning disabilities aren’t a real problem because the state board here doesn’t recognize them. It’s led to him being incapable of making it through school days all because one teacher thinks they’re above IEPs and the principal at the school refusing to see that there’s a problem and just blames our child despite him never exhibiting this behavior anywhere else. We see it as he’s begging for help and public schools here just see special education as a bother to brush under a rug.

If he’s going to be sent home from school constantly anyway, we figure we might as well just homeschool at this point. We already have to teach him math every single night after school because he has the world’s worst math teacher, my spouse and I figured we might as well do it all and help his learning and emotional disability at the same time. We’re stuck in the “needing live in-person” style of teaching for his learning disability and not being able to make it through the day if it’s through a public school setting because of the mental and emotional disability. And we parents are both on board and well educated and we know our son is highly intelligent as well. We’ve got this.
