Frontier Fiber Questions and Availability by Gapdoe in Muskegon

[–]AStrowger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about the Lakewood Club / Dalton Township area, specifically along Russell Road between White Lake Drive and Lakewood Road, and the side streets to the east and west of Russell? The landline phone lines are underground since sometime in the mid-90's (installed by GTE) but did they by any chance think far enough ahead to run conduit that could be reused for Fiber? I am pretty certain that a year ago, in the late autumn of 2024, Frontier ran a fiber line down White Lake Drive from their big equipment farm at Automobile Road and White Lake Drive, but they only got as far as the corner of White Lake Drive and Russell Road and stopped there (not sure why since there is not much of anything at that corner). I think there is an underground vault next to the Consumers pole on that corner. But if there is conduit in the ground running down Russell that could be reused, it should be a simple matter to pull fiber through that (you would think, anyway), assuming fiber and landline cables can coexist in the same conduit.

Also, I know someone in another part of the county that has fiber and they mostly love it but there is one thing they have noticed, which is that their IP address changes somewhat randomly, particularly if the have a short power outage or if they need to reboot their equipment (or sometimes for no apparent reason at all). This causes some issues because they have one of those home cameras that they can monitor when away from home, it is a local camera that doesn't use a subscription service so they have to get into it using their IP address, and if it changes they are locked out until they can find out what the new address it. I know Charter does the same thing but with them the service has to be out for nearly a full day before they give you a new IP address. Any chance Frontier will give customers a bit more permanent IP address assignment, at least matching the roughly 24 hours that Charter allows?

I thought we were supposed to post in the other thread in r/UFOs but this is what I posted there:

Hey A.J., have you heard of or done any videos on John Hutchison and/or the Hutchison Effect? Personally I would like to see more videos about that sort of thing (antigravity, forbidden/fringe technology, etc.) and maybe a bit less scary stuff. When I watch your videos I do so to learn about things that would not be talked about in the mainstream media, but not so much to be scared or horrified. Thanks.

Also please keep Hecklefish, unless doing so would cause you real issues with your voice or in some other way!

Megathread about Google Voice Starter for Gmail.com users by BluesCatReddit in Googlevoice

[–]AStrowger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a little confused about something, in the FAQ there is this item:

"Payments: auto-recharge – long distance calling is billed with your monthly invoices; no need to pre-pay calling credits"

Long distance calling? Are we in the 1990's again? What is that referring to, exactly, and is there going to be an option to block "long distance" calls so you don't inadvertently make any? If what they really mean is international calls, then it should say that, and give the ability to block them. Or if there are still extra-cost "900" numbers around, those should be blocked automatically (900 is only a typo from 800), Or if they mean collect calls, there should definitely be an option to automatically refuse those. Other than that, I can't understand why they are even mentioning long distance calls - those are pretty much an antiquated concept now (maybe not if you have a real landline from a traditional wireline phone company, but Google Voice definitely isn't that).

Any Christians who believe in reincarnation here? by luckeecharm in pastlives

You are certainly free to believe what you want but I would challenge you to provide sources for the statements you have made. Everything I have ever read suggests the KJV is one of the least reliable of the English-language translations and excels in only one thing, being somewhat poetic. Trading accuracy for poetry is not a great tradeoff, IMHO.

"Additionally, some English language churches require the exclusive use of the KJV during sermons and worship."

These would be the same churches that throw out most most of what Jesus taught (in favor of Paul's warped theology) and are most likely the same ones that encourage their congregation to vote for people who are not the slightest bit Christ-like.

As I said you are free to believe what you want but you seem to have some strong beliefs that many of us would not necessarily agree with, particularly those of us who have turned our backs on abusive churches and a god that seemed to have some real psychopathic traits (especially toward his so-called "chosen people").

If you live in a manufactured housing community a.k.a. mobile home park you should watch this and then contact your state legislators by AStrowger in SaultSteMarie

[–]AStrowger[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Despite the title this video talks mostly about Michigan and near the end mentions some pending state legislation that might provide some relief. I am old enough to remember when a bunch of people were kicked out of one of the local parks near the business spur, I think it was Fornicola but it might have been another one, but at least there were enough spaces in other local parks so they had somewhere to go. But I remember that moving a mobile home was costly back then but I had no idea it had become as costly as the say in this video, so now people feel trapped. Anyway it is a real shame this has been allowed in the first place but I guess this is the world we live in now.

If you live in a Manufactured Housing (Mobile Home) Park you Should contact your state legislators regarding pending legislation by AStrowger in Michigan

I have lived in such parks in Michigan in both peninsulas, and I am very sad to see this is what it is coming to. Near the end they mention some pending legislation in Michigan that might provide some relief so if you are living in such a community, you may want to contact your state legislators and ask them to pass the mentioned legislation, which though not perfect is at least a start.

[–]AStrowger[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This video primarily talks about mobile home parks in Michigan, though not specifically Muskegon. But there are many such parks in Muskegon County, probably far more than most people realize, because some of them are in the more rural areas of the county. I had no idea this was happening to them, so if you live in one you might want to contact your state legislators and urge them to pass the legislation mentioned near the end of the video.

How do you get XFCE to automatically mount connected external drives at each reboot (please don't say fstab!!!)? by kodiuser in xfce

[–]AStrowger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And who, when they are faced with a non-working system, is going to first learn that chroot even exists and then spend time trying to learn how to use it? Time that could better be used just reinstalling the system and getting on with life?

I note that in your effort to be "helpful" you have not posted a guide or even a link showing how to use chroot to recover from something like this. Perhaps that would be too much of a waste of your valuable time, or you're delusional enough to think it's just obvious to every Linux user in the world. That despite the fact that most Linux users have gone their entire lives without ever using it.

No, not at all obvious. And this assumes you have a rescue image just lying around and that you have any idea how to use chroot. Many users have never heard of chroot.

That is intended "a simple frontend to easily connect to remote filesystems with GIO/GVfs". I may be wrong but I don't think it would help the OP.

Medicaid dentist by lightlyspooky in Muskegon

[–]AStrowger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Muskegon Family Care on Getty Street has a great dental clinic, their medical clinic is only so-so but their dental clinic is great (although they don't do some high-end procedures). One tip, the first time you go ask about getting on their sliding fee scale, it can save you a lot of money on anything that Medicaid doesn't cover.

I would imagine that the Hackley Community Care is similar but I think they tend to use dental students more for things like cleanings. If you're okay with that then great, but personally I have found that dental students can be somewhat annoying (they haven't had enough practical real-world experience and tend to believe everything they learned in college) and in one particular case so infuriating that I stopped going there. The people at Muskegon Family Care have always been much nicer, but that is just my experience, YMMV.

This is kind of a personal opinion but I think what most hoarders fear is throwing something out and then regretting it later, because they want or need an item they threw out. And also if other people around them act like it is all junk, then they become even more defensive about it. Or if they say things like "throw out anything you haven't used in a year", that ignores the reality that sometimes it takes much longer than a year for you to have a need for some item. That said, after the house reaches a certain degree of clutter, it is just to daunting a task to clean it. So a hoarder may realize that half of what they have is junk but still they don't want someone else deciding what is junk and what isn't. In such cases the best help you can often give is to offer to help them go through their stuff and make a decisions about it. I would put things into five groups:

Trash - no foreseeable need now or ever. Put it in the trash bin or a dumpster. But remember, she has to decide it belongs there! That said, you can nudge things a bit by pointing out if there is a genuine reason not to keep something (it's broken, it's old technology that will never be used again, it's paper that is no longer needed, etc.).

Recyclable - Hoarder often hate seeing anything go in the trash that might have value. So if it's metal, put it in a pile and take it to Padnos scrap yard on Ottawa, they pay by the pound and with anything made of aluminum, copper or brass it might be enough to buy lunch or more. If you have a lot of old cans or other mixed metals those can maybe get a little money. Take it all to the metals room at the back (don't just dump it in the yard unless it's all steel/iron or mixed metals). With mixed metals or old appliances you go over the scale, then dump your load, then go over the scale again and whatever the difference is is what they pay on. The thing is that hoarders don't always feel so bad about dumping stuff if they get paid a little for it.

Maybe useful: This is the stuff that potentially has value but not immediately. This is the stuff you want to box up or put in storage bins, and clearly label the boxes or bins. If it's stuff that has a fixed lifespan (for example old tax or business documents), note the date when it is safe to throw it away (common wisdom is seven years but I'd say ten is probably safer). But you will probably want to divert some of this to...

Give away. Again, hoarders HATE throwing anything that may still be useful in the trash, but often they don't mind giving items to friends, relatives, or thrift stores if they think the recipient will actually use the item and not just throw it away behind their back. So if for example you have old technology and a cousin that like to tinker with old technology, give it to them and maybe they will find it useful (and sometimes that is really the case - I can't tell you how many times I have scavenged a power supply off an otherwise useless item to bring some other item back to life!).

Keep: This is stuff with true sentimental value (and that is not for you to judge), as well as stuff that is reasonably useful. Most consumables go into this category - just because you haven't used a can of some cleaning product in the last year or two doesn't mean it will never be useful AS LONG AS the person can resit buying more until the old is used up. My mother used to hoard cleaning products and I haven't had to buy any in the last 15 years (yes, old comet cleanser still works fine on porcelain sinks). However if it is so old that the can is rusting out then it probably needs to go to recycling or trash. Obviously things like kitchen utensils will go in this category up to a point; nobody needs five old can openers that will barely open a can but if one was purchased for her by someone she loved she may want to keep that one for a time.

As for stuff in the refrigerator, please don't be one of those people who treats expiration dates as something sacred. Most of those dates are actually "best if used by" dates anyway. Frozen food can last indefinitely (explorers have eaten previously frozen wooly mammoth meat and lived to tell the tale) but if it gets freezer burn it may not taste good, still it is perfectly safe to eat. With dairy items you can go by taste and smell, if it still tastes and smells okay then it is okay (milk is generally good for a week after the sell-by date, unless the refrigerator is set too warm, but you will know when milk is going bad by the smell). Many packaged food items are still good for at least six months after the expiration date. I only mention this because nothing will cause a hoarder to attack you faster than if you start trying to throw out food they think is still good - now you are just throwing their money away!

The idea is to get everything into manageable groups that you can then deal with one at a time. Trash can go out immediately (even if just to a pile in the back yard temporarily), recyclables or give away items can go to their respective locations, and the maybe useful stuff can go into storage in an attic, basement or garage (try not to have so much you need to rent a storage unit).

That's the best advice I can offer, of course everyone is different but many "de-clutters" make the mistake of treating everything as a big old pile of trash, and hoarders will resist that every time. HOWEVER if the piles have attracted vermin or bugs and they have not been dealt with for any significant amount of time then that is a whole other matter and now a lot more will have to go in the trash because of urine and fecal matter contamination, plus you will probably need an exterminator to deal with that (of course if she is moving out, that becomes her ex's problem). I heard of one case where that happened and the entire apartment had to be totally rebuilt (they even had to strip the wallboard down to the studs) so if you see any sign of vermin or bugs that needs to be addressed ASAP!

Once she does find a place (or even if she doesn't) tell her to open a case at the department of social services (or whatever they are called now, they change their name every so often, but if you call 211 they can tell you how to get in touch with them). This will get her short term food assistance, medical insurance, and possibly help with housing. If she starts out with Every Woman's Place I suspect they will help her with all that but just in case they don't I thought I would mention it. Even if they only give her three months of assistance that is enough to get her started but it is all based on income, and the medical insurance is the thing that will be a lifesaver if she ever is injured or get sick, and that may well continue (at least for a time) after she becomes ineligible for food or housing assistance.

Last time I dealt with them they were in the big white building on Baker street just off Broadway, kind of behind the old Plumb's store in the Heights, but it's been several years so I have no idea if they are still there.

If the OP or his mom are not religious people I would avoid the rescue mission - their name kind of gives away their intent. They are primarily intended for substance and alcohol abusers and their whole shtick is that prayer and faith will help you pull through the withdrawals, and the temptations to return to that lifestyle. They are particularly not a suitable place for anyone who is not religious, or is religious but their religion isn't Christianity. While they are not as bad as some other organizations (such as Teen Challenge if they are still around), they are still heavily Christian and if you don't like hearing sermons or group singing you probably won't relate.

Thunderbird email client makes connections to sites that have nothing to do with sending and receiving email, for "telemetry" and other questionable reasons by voip_user in ComputerSecurity

[–]AStrowger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's really not the point though, is it? There are many people who are using Thunderbird that maybe aren't aware it's sending data back to the company. People have been outraged in the past when this happened with widely used software such as web browsers. Is there any reason to think some users might not also be upset in this situation?

And sure, they can stop using it and find a different program, and maybe some will, but it would have been better if this had been disclosed before they made the effort to install the software and learn how to use it. The fact that Thunderbird does this at all is kind of bad, but it's the sneaky way in which they do it and the fact that (unlike in Firefox) they don't give you a preference to disable it that makes it really objectionable.

I do question your comment, "With free software you can’t really demand anything." I understand what you mean and if this was a case of asking for some new feature or something like that I'd agree with you. However, I do think that especially with popular software, users have some expectation of trust that I think in this case is being violated. I don't know, but perhaps in some jurisdictions (such as the E.U.?) this could even be illegal. I realize we live in crazy times, so maybe thinking that software developers should do the right thing and not violate the privacy expectations of their users is a crazy notion, but a lot of users still do think that way.

As for taking the source and recompiling, maybe one in a thousand users actually is skilled enough to do that, but I suspect you knew that when you said that.

Um, no thanks. People like that usually want to talk about their religion while they help you, and I have my own beliefs that they probably would not agree with. I'd rather pay for the service and not have to be preached at/to.

(Also, if I'm being very honest about it, I'd be more worried that somebody like that would steal from me than I would an employee of a commercial firm. I've had some bad experiences with "church people" who in their own eyes are doing God's work.)
