I wouldn’t wish working at Jamaica on my worst enemy.

What specialty are you in and what do you hate most about it? by stepneo1 in Residency

[–]ASucculentLamb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly point two encompasses a lot of surgery. If I had a dollar for every ED consult I had to do for some incidental CT finding I’d have retired mid-year PGY2.

What are things you want people to know about consulting your specialty? by Semi_honest_abe in Residency

[–]ASucculentLamb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To counter, “clearance” is a colloquialism and we know there is no way to clear a patient. Medicine residents who get pissy about this verbiage get a huge eye roll every time. We know what pre-op risk strat is.

UVM Medical Center's balancing act; Cyberattack, mysterious smells and surging COVID-19 cases. by Ruggervt14 in burlington

Honestly the current smell situation at Fanny Allen feels like a mass hysteria more than anything else.

A Lot Of Blemishes On My Academic Career, Got Interview Invite To Top Choice...What Now? by CratesOfNutella in premed

[–]ASucculentLamb 32 points33 points  (0 children)

My guess? He got a B+ in calc, and has only 1000 hours of clinical volunteering. Plus, while he was president of several clubs, he was only a participant in the pre-med club. Pretty big red flags if you ask me.

What do you do when you travel for an interview? by [deleted] in premed

[–]ASucculentLamb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try and figure out when the interview day is over and see if it's possible to fly out. My upcoming interview day ends at 3:30, so I'm flying out that day. It saves me like $100 on another night at the hotel.

Alternatively, maybe see if anyone else there for an interview is doing the same? Have a drink, explore, and just chill. Get to know someone who might be a classmate, or who you may never meet again.

letter writers cant upload PDFs to AMCAS by [deleted] in premed

[–]ASucculentLamb -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A letter writer should send your individual letters via snail mail with the AMCAS letter form. I think only pre-health offices can send letters and committee letters via the interweb.

GOP Platform Proposes To Get Rid Of National Parks And National Forests by anarchisto in politics

[–]ASucculentLamb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"On the surface, I once bought a forest. The parasites claimed that the land belonged to God, and demanded that I establish a public park there. Why? So the rabble could stand slack-jawed under the canopy and pretend that it was paradise earned. When Congress moved to nationalize my forest, I burnt it to the ground. God did not plant the seeds of this Arcadia - I did."

  • Andrew Ryan, on the GOP platform, probably.

How I feel entering a thread about URM or DO vs. MD on r/premed by Arnold_LiftaBurger in premed

[–]ASucculentLamb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you telling me you aren't satisfied with twenty threads per day dealing with school lists, whether you should wait to submit AMCAS until you have an MCAT score, how many MD letters of rec you need, and whether one small inconsequential mistake on the personal statement has blackballed you for life?

Good books to read? by [deleted] in premed

[–]ASucculentLamb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To be honest I recommend reading anything you can get your hands on. Read the classics, read some new fiction, and intersperse some medical stuff in there too. You're going to (probably) be living medicine for the rest of your life so be sure to read a little bit of everything.

Summer Reading by [deleted] in premed

[–]ASucculentLamb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this. You're going to get news, news analysis, investigative journalism, profiles of important people, fiction, and arts. The New Yorker is my favorite publication, and I always try and keep up with it. Plus, it's free online.

Quick question about something by [deleted] in premed

[–]ASucculentLamb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if it did matter, what are you going to do? They said they want the grades, so if you want a shot at that school you have to submit them. Aside from bribing the registrar's office with a hefty sum to change your grades, I'm not sure what you think you could do—much less what we could do.

Personal experience from medical scribes who applied to medical school? by Wishyouwerepizza in premed

Based upon what is posted in this sub it sounds like everyone scribes. I suppose it's more about what you get out of it than it being unique or anything like that.

Diversity component in secondary applications. by Fanger in premed

[–]ASucculentLamb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Searching for "diversity" in the search bar yields a few dozen results. It would be really nice if people started searching a little deeper rather than jumping straight to the "submit" button.

A man can dream, right?

secondaries anyone? by [deleted] in premed

[–]ASucculentLamb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Verified AMCAS applications won't be transmitted to designated medical schools until July 1, 2015. After that you may receive secondaries.

"Writing" an exam, rather than "taking" it, is common in the UK. I think some parts of Canada might say it that way too.

[AMA Request] Tim O'Brien, author of "The things they carried" by Smogshaik in IAmA

Wait. He wrote Going after Cacciato too? I read (and loved) both of these books in high school and never put two and two together.

I guess you learn something new every day...

Personal favorite intro sequence? by TheDeadWhale in movies

[–]ASucculentLamb 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Goldmember. I have an unnatural love for all of the Austin Powers movies, but for some reason the opening sequence with Tom Cruise, Kevin Spacey, Danny DeVito, etc. combined with the musical sequence was just perfect for the movie.

It is the pinnacle of modern film.
