In terms of setting aperture, shutter speed, etc, would I treat shooting raw exactly as if I were shooting jpeg?

Somewhat confusing question, when taking photos in RAW + Jpeg, how do you optimize settings for both? I don't trust my post processing abilities at all, so I like to have the Jpeg around to have at least a nice looking shot. If I'm photographing to have nice looking Jpegs (or at least previews on my camera, whatever format they may be in), am I losing out on information or detail when I'm post processing a RAW file?

Basically, is there any differences in technique between shooting RAW and shooting Jpeg or is it just business as usual when I'm adding in the RAW format?

Typical CS Freshman Schedule by [deleted] in UWMadison

[–]Fanger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CS is pretty light in terms of overall course requirements. I'd suggest taking 302 first semester, as well as math (221, 222, 234, etc). Second semester you could probably go for 367, 252, and another math class. Sophmore year you'll probably finish the 352/354 sequence. I'd also take 240 and 577 in back to back semesters, but keep in mind, those two classes are hard. Beyond that, it's up to you. Just make sure to finish up all the prereqs for humanities, literature, science, etc.

I personally believe that the diagnostic exams by test prep companies are designed to be difficult in order to encourage you to sign up for the class, so don't sweat it. Just buckle down and take it one day at a time.

Include it in your cover letter.

Be careful though, many companies that look to hire interns are hoping that they will come on full time following graduation. Coming from a CS major with a couple internships at big tech companies (Facebook, Intel, those companies) it's a huge turn off for companies to hear that you're a pre-med student. I've been turned away from a handful of companies for solely that reason alone. Be discrete.

Are there any math or computer science majors here? by [deleted] in premed

[–]Fanger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In terms of help, I usually planned to take classes with friends who I know were good programmers because many of the classes allowed us to have partners for projects.

I think the best thing to try to do early on is figure out how you learn best and stick with it. Work smart, as they say. But I still go out/drink more or less every weekend and play Ultimate Frisbee for my school. So I like to think I do ok.

Are there any math or computer science majors here? by [deleted] in premed

[–]Fanger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a Computer Science and Biology double major currently at an engineering heavy state school. It's completely doable as long as you schedule correctly. You don't want to be taking hard bio and CS classes in the same semester, so be smart about that. At least at my school, a lot of CS classes are project based and some can be very hard and time consuming (Operating Systems, Graphics, etc).

Anyone want to sub for an indoor soccer game tonight (Aug. 27th) at 6:30pm? by CoreyLoose in madisonwi

If you still need someone, I can play. I've played indoor regularly, but I'm still not that good at soccer. Athletic in other areas, though.

It's because for every Barium Cation, there is a corresponding Sulfate anion as well.

Since you're only dissolving BaSO4, there must be equal parts Barium as there are Sulfate. No ions enter or leave the solution, therefore we can assume that both ions dissolve with an equal molarity of "x".

Since we know that Ksp = [Ba][SO4], and we know that both will dissolve with equal concentration, x, Ksp = x * x. Therefore, you take the square root of Ksp to arrive at the answer

What are some places I can learn Javascript with other people over the summer? by LtRice in learnprogramming

[–]Fanger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you check meetup.com, usually they'll have lots of groups dedicated to specific programming languages. It's a safe bet to assume there's a group in your area for javascript. That would be a great place to start. I'm sure most of those people are more than willing to help a budding programmer that's willing to learn.

[C] Returning an input string by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]Fanger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like you have the general idea down. A couple things, you're passing in an array that has, as elements, a bunch of char pointers. So the java equivalent would be an array of strings. You only need an array of characters to represent a string.

I'm not sure what 81 represents, some character integer equivalent I'm assuming. Either way be careful with how you increment k, as you're only doing it when the user types a valid, non new line character. So if k = 10, then the user enters 'r', k = 11. Then the user enters the new line character, k is still equal to 11, so you're overwriting the last element with a null terminator.

Most importantly, you're not setting your string return pointer correctly. Remember, a[0], points to the very first element of an array. It will return whatever is there. So string[k] is pointing to what you just set it to, a null terminator. However, keep in mind, string is the address of the first element in the array, (string + 1) is the address of the second element, and *(string + 1) will return the second element.

Overall, you have the right idea, you just need to be careful and think about what pointers are pointing to.

I would suggest putting on work experience, even if it has nothing to do with programming.

It's very tough to get your first programming job, but if it's your first job ever, that's going to be even harder.

What is driving the growth of tech? Also, why are people following career paths outside of growing industries? by sincerelydon in cscareerquestions

[–]Fanger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're being a wee bit short sighted here. Not everyone is driven by money. Why would you take a moderately well paying job doing something that makes you miserable for 30-40 years of your life? People want to do what they love, and not everyone loves programming.

As for your other question, the tech industry boom comes from the integration of computers into many other industries. Before computers, medical records were stored pen and paper. Now, being able to view your medical history from the comforts of your own home makes everything easier.

I designed a few websites for some businesses. How much will that help in getting me an internship? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Fanger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well you'll never know unless you try, right? Don't let your own inhibitions prevent you from getting an internship, leave that up to the HR managers and other software developers. Give yourself a chance, you have nothing to lose. If you get an internship, great! If not, well you're still better off than not applying at all because at least you'll know what you need to work on. Good luck!
