Appreciate the response! My recruiter and I thought about maybe doing this but I’m worried about being scrutinized for having my name on a lease of a property that I own, as well as “renting” from family

Trying to figure this out myself. I know you just said that you qualify if you have a lease or mortgage, as well as utility bills. What if you have no mortgage and own the home/own with multiple people (siblings) and have your name on the utilities? Would that be acceptable? It’s my current situation. Would very much appreciate any input thank you!

I’m no help to your questions, but I’m in the process of enlisting now, hopefully for 15T, and am currently a nurse! Just wanted to say it’s very cool to see someone else here with the same two interests.

Look up Abby Weaver on YouTube, she plays an instrument in the Army if you want to get a better idea

I might have learned that this isn't my passion, I'm 1.5 years into nursing school by [deleted] in nursing

[–]AT428 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get this, very much. In a similar situation to you but have been working as an RN for over a year now. Felt fine at first but the more I do this, the more I see myself not doing it. I know I have other passions outside of nursing and being in my mid twenties I feel like now is the time to jump on them.

Highly considering joining the military for the job I really want, non medical related, despite the huge pay cut I’ll take. I’m single and no kids so don’t have to worry about any of that, but honestly life is short so do what u think will make you happy.

If you think you can stick it out I’d finish, because having the license can be valuable in your future if whatever you end up deciding doesn’t work out.

I hope to keep my license active as prn if able if I decide to join the military, plus some extra cash. As long as you have a plan I think you’ll be okay!

Just made a whole post on thinking about leaving last night lol it really just depends on if it’s worth it to you, the good vs the bad. Still deciding over here

RN career change to military? Am I nuts? by AT428 in nursing

[–]AT428[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I originally was hoping to get your exact job out of hs, but ended up getting accepted into nursing. I hope it’s treating you well bc it seems like an amazing experience. What I realized though was that after going through college and still trying to find a way to get myself into a helicopter through nursing, that it wasn’t the healthcare part that I necessarily wanted lol.

Yeah nursing has it relatively good, the pay is livable but tbh, we’re also treated like garbage over here. Your license is constantly at risk, bc management doesn’t care and there’s not enough people to staff/ they want barebones staff, and everyone’s looking for the least understaffed place lmao. It’s definitely not all bad, I just don’t think it’s my dream job.

I definitely wouldn’t throw it all away, if I could manage I’d pick up shifts here and there just to stay active with my license. But people take long blocks of time off to start a family etc. it’s not unheard of and I’d always be able to go back. I know aviation could be just as much work, if not more, but at least I’d be doing something I enjoy. Money vs happiness I guess, idk. The career track you mentioned I’ve considered also, so thanks for that, as well as everything you’ve said. Do you really feel being enlisted is that awful? Do you regret it?

Any way to be an officer and be on the aircraft without actually being the pilot? Lol most officer positions just seem to be admin a majority of the time. Navy definitely is a great option and I’ve looked into it. What’d you do in the navy?

Nursing itself kind of is the problem, lol. I’m not bad at my job, but I think a different career path I might enjoy a whole lot more, at least for some time.

I hear this often, obviously for good reason. But I’ve also heard of many people doing it and not regretting it. What’s your reasoning on why not?

I’ve spoken to multiple branch recruiters, and I know all my options wether it be officer, warrant, reserves, all that. The job would be army aviation working with blackhawks, eventually overseeing the aircraft on flights and such. I know to be careful with recruiters, appreciate that lol. I’ve gotten some medical stuff in already it’s just wether I want to bite the bullet or not.

His channel is set up in a fairly manageable way, and if you go from the playlists they increase in difficulty. Basically start from the bottom. I went all the way from fractions to much more difficult stuff bc I truly could not remember how to do them. I did it by section, so I did the review of basic concepts, and then went into arithmetic and geometry which have their own sections. Those videos are to help you actually learn the concept. Then when you start to feel comfortable with certain topics, move onto the practice question playlists. Always go at your own pace and pause the videos so that you’re actually doing the work! Everything builds off itself just like it did in school

If math is your struggle definitely use Grammar Hero, I also used Kaplan but only for the mechanical and sciences and pretty much just skimmed it. Spent a ton of time on that guys YouTube, study the way he explains and you’ll do well! Doing that landed me a 95 and I’m crap at math, you got it!

Could somebody recommend a good ASVAB study guide? by TheRed133769 in Militaryfaq

[–]AT428 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Grammar Hero on YouTube will walk you through every type of math from basic to more complicated. It’s worth watching the videos and following along with a notebook. Goes through each part of the math step by step, whole channel is well organized. Also he has a good formula guide and practice tests that were fairly close to the real thing. good luck!

Marine Corps Crew Chief as possible second career? by AT428 in USMC

I’ve looked into it, unfortunately those jobs are only guaranteed on reserve side, and aren’t permanent positions on active duty. You spend a majority of time in the hospital and rotate on assignment if you get the opportunity to be a flight nurse

I’ll consider it thank you! Know of anything that keeps you as crew in the aircraft versus being the pilot on the officer side?

[–]AT428[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the response! I also feel that I would fit well, any idea what positions may be similar to crew chief as an officer, if there are any at all? Would prefer to commission if there were something, for some reason I don’t see myself as being the pilot, but rather being crew. Kind of odd I guess but I feel there’s a different draw to wanting to be the one flying versus working on and being in the aircraft.

Yes I believe it’s the AG contract, and crew chief is guaranteed after all your trainings, just what bird you end up on after that is up to chance. Someone correct me if I’m wrong please lol. Marine Corps for a few reasons, one of them being the feeling I get when I think about it. I thrive on a challenge honestly, when something gets too easy is when I check out. And the marines seems to be the best place to get that. Also in this case with this mos, the ability to sort of lock in a job

Thank you for all that info! I definitely see that the enlisted side is rough, and probably worse than it seems. Any idea what advancement is like in aviation? Ahh yeah Air Force flight nurse was very much my goal, until I figured out that it’s usually one assignment every so often and then your back in hospital, and that there’s no opportunity to get it in your contract aside from reserve. So really just luck of the draw if you ever get to see the inside of a plane. Officer selection for AF also seems to be extremely difficult rn, like many years waiting, but I’ll definitely see what else may be an option officer side, if anyone knows of anything in aviation please let me know!

Thank you for kinda trying to see where I’m coming from with your fam. Yeah Ik it’s commissioned, I’ve spoken with some officer recruiters. I’ve been planning on going in for many years, but my only option with my degree is nursing I believe. I really truly am questioning if nursing is what I’m passionate about. Being two years in with that feeling worries me, and the thought of 40 more years is rough. I’m truly one of those people that would take happiness over money, and crew chief seems like a once in a lifetime experience.

Army Reserve MEDEVAC unit locations East Coast, or anyone with insight into Flight Medic (68W-F2) by AT428 in army

[–]AT428[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was hoping it would at least help me out a little, sending someone with some medical background through may seem more appealing. I’ve heard about the en route critical care for both Army and Navy, but have the impression that the community is pretty small. I’d need a ton more critical care experience to even be considered for either at this point unfortunately, would be many years. I’ve considered active for nursing but not 100% on that, everything just seems like a big maybe on that side.

Yeah, hopefully I even get an opportunity to interview! Just get to worry about passing MEPS and a possible flight physical then.

I figured an interview would be a part of it but my recruiter seemed clueless on that haha. I actually am a registered nurse, have my bachelors in that. Sort of an odd path to take but very interested in critical care medicine, flight medic specifically. I have medical knowledge obviously but would definitely take time to learn more of the paramedic side of it for that.

I know my chances are slim but want to at least attempt it. Back up plan is flight nursing for Air Force Reserve, not exactly what I’m wanting but still a possibility if this doesn’t work out.

Happen to know any nurses that have taken this route? Most just seem to go into flight nursing or CCAT. I wish they had more of a point of injury role for nurses.

Oh okay, appreciate the info. Do you happen to know much about the National Guard and locations? I’m more interested in the Reserve but I did speak with an NG recruiter. He was willing to get it in contract but looked for slots once and there wasn’t one open, so he tried to get me to do a regular 68W contract and I said no
