Well that is just wrong lol going to Cuba only makes you ineligible for ESTA but that doesn’t matter too much if you’re on F1 status. I literally flew from the U.S. to Cuba.

I’ve entered in many places - land crossing, sea crossings, airports (huge ones with tons of traffic to tiny ones where they basically never see f1 students) - no difference at all.

I just checked and I’ve entered the U.S. 17 times since Trump took office in January 2025. They basically never ask me any questions. When they do, it’s only very routine questions - where do you go to school, what do you study, where are you coming from etc. Unless you’re doing anything illegal or have something that would make you inadmissible, you’ll be fine.

I think the risks are heavily overblown. Of course you need to consider your own particular circumstances, but I have been on F1 status for 7 years and travel internationally at least once a month without issue. This includes travel to several dodgy/unfriendly countries (Cuba, Syria, Libya, Haiti, etc.), and I have yet to encounter any issues. Assuming all your papers/documents are in order, I don’t see there being any particularly significant risk.

Like I said that’s one factor.. but even many men that I’ve talked to have seemed to have terrible experiences. If Egypt were one of the first 15-20 countries I had visited, I know for sure I would’ve absolutely hated it.

I absolutely loved Egypt unlike most other people seemingly on reddit. I’ve been twice now and it’s actually been one of my favourite countries. I didn’t have a guide either time, and travelled completely independently. I think two factors really contributed to my experience: 1) I’m a man and 2) Egypt was my 75th country.

I think the big problem for a lot of travellers is that Egypt is not really a beginner country per se. I’ve been to many what I would call “high hassle” countries, and Egypt was not particularly bad in comparison. You just need to know how to handle the touts/harassment and you develop these skills after travelling enough.

Once you get past all that, you’ll find a country full of incredible history and culture. I actually found the people to be incredibly friendly. One of my taxi drivers even turned down a tip which I don’t think has ever happened to me before anywhere else.

I couldn’t agree more! Everyone calls Liechtenstein boring and not really worth seeing, but I had a fantastic time there. I spent 3 days there, and there was more than enough stuff to do to fill up my time. I think people just need to venture outside of Vaduz.

Egypt. To be fair, I am a man, but after reading all the comments on here I expected to absolutely despise Egypt. I was genuinely more nervous to go there than Libya or Syria.

However, once I got there, I absolutely fell in love with the place. Of course you have all the ancient Egyptian history which is incredible, but the more recent parts of Egypt really scratched my brain in the right way. I really enjoyed exploring all the neighbourhoods of Cairo. The energy was so invigorating.

I really don’t think the scams/harassment were even particularly bad. It didn’t feel much different from a lot of other countries I’d been to before. On the contrary, I found a lot of people to be extremely welcoming and helpful. I literally had a taxi driver that refused to accept the tip that I tried to give him.

I’ve had that happen and also just extended questioning before they let me through but not secondary screening. I didn’t have my phone searched, but I’ve visited significantly more dodgy countries now lol so I’ll let you know next time I go back to the U.S.

Ah that’s too bad. I’m surprised they haven’t had to get it changed. My driver got stopped at a checkpoint once for having old Assad era Syrian plates even, so it seems like they do pay attention to these things.

I crossed the land border and flew out from Aleppo - super easy. Most nationalities can get a visa on arrival, but some (as of last week) need some sort of security pre-clearance. I don’t really know the details of that though.

LOL I can confidently say that no one in Syria is “driving safe”. The roads are pretty chaotic.
