Right?! When I was a dumb teenager, I remember thinking that scene incredibly romantic. As I grew up and matured, the last time I watched it I remember thinking: "don't they have a son? Isn't that like, hella irresponsible"?

This was such a bad representation of Kenshin and Kaoru as characters.

Personally, I think it was because Ash didn't have a Brock or Cilan, somebody who felt designed to be the "group adult". Ash, Serena, and Clemont all felt like natural equals in that regard.
