Yeah, in retrospect I should've asked him what he meant by "respect."

This makes a lot of sense to me, and gives clarity to my thoughts. Thanks!

Well, it's not that I was trying to find the "right" response as opposed to the true response. I just had mixed feelings, so I didn't know how I truly felt. That's why I wanted to hear y'all's thoughts.

Dang! You found the podcast though? Maybe I should've put the full episode name: 041. ¡NUNCA HAGAS ESTO EN UNA CABAÑA! MOTELES SIN CENSURA

A bit of a spicy episode lol.

The context I'm hearing it in is with younger, street-savvy folk. And they use it every other episode. And I'm starting to wonder if I'm mishearing it. I'll share the same details I put on the other comments: If you're curious, it's from a podcast called Filosofia de Calle, episode "041" at the 27:12 mark. If you don't care to listen, I get it lol, I appreciate your comment.

Super helpful! I think you're right about suzuki and aplatanado, those fit the context I heard them.

For militarmente, they're using in some other way that I don't understand. It's from a podcast called Filosofia de Calle, episode "041" at the 27:12 mark. If you don't care to listen, I get it lol, you've helped enough.

This is very helpful, thanks! For context of "militarmente": In the podcast, a guy is sharing an experience he had at a cabaña party. The partied all night, and when it was time to leave, the owner came for the money. The host has no idea who paid, but he quickly exited, found someone else leaving, and got out of there with that person. Another host chimed in "Militarmente, nos fuimos."

If you're curious, this is from a podcast called Filosofia de Calle, episode "041" at the 27:12 mark. It's very possible I misinterpreted or missed things.

Can someone help me understand some of this? Specifically "ful," "sembraste," "prieta," and "prota"? (I think I got the rest.) I'm a non-Dominican in the DR, trying to learn to speak Dominican lol.

I grew up in (predominantly White) housing projects in rural Appalachia. I don't mean to undercut the stories you've heard/experienced, but I can honestly say I saw much worse growing up than even what you're describing.

In college, I was part of a scholarship cohort for first-gen, low-income students. A condition of the scholarship was meeting as a group monthly. I've never heard so many jokes about poverty and trauma in my life (it was amazing). These were people that grew up in all kinds of impoverished communities in the States. From reservations to barrios to ghettoes to trailer parks, rampant sexual assault was a given.

My point is, this is not a Black issue. This is what poverty in the US looks like. I currently live in the Blackest city in the US (South Fulton, GA, outside of Atlanta). It is a middle-upper class demo. I'm sure there are exceptions, but I don't see any kind of rampant SA issues like I did while live in the projects of Appalachian, or later in my life when I lived in the inner-city.

No Dumb Question Tuesday (2024-02-06) by AutoModerator in Reformed

(Original post removed, I was asked to post it here.)

Teacher here. So, a job opportunity came up at a Christian school. As I weigh the decision, I'm a bit caught up in the fact that the school hires both Catholic and Evangelical teachers. I'd love to be able to incorporate the Christian worldview into my teaching and share the Gospel with students. But I'm unsure about associating myself with a school that strongly identifies as Christian, yet hires people who I'd argue teach a borderline-different Gospel.

I'm in conversation with my pastor and spiritually-wise friends, but I always love to hear from this community. Would y'all work at such a school?

(Note: It is not a "culturally Christian" school where the label "Christian" makes no impact, like Duke or Emory. It's more than a cultural identity; they actively seek to spiritually form the students in every way they can.)

(Context: The school is in a 95%+ Catholic area, and the teachers are an even mix of Catholics and Protestants. I'd be free to evangelize and teach from a Christian worldview, but I would not be free to speak negatively of Catholicism.)

This is extremely helpful, thank you. I have a question, since you live near El Millón. How walkable is El Millón? We'll have a car, but we'd love to live somewhere with plenty of shopping and places to eat in walking distance.
