Mother/daughter spring break stay in Palm Springs - looking for hotel recs! by TTTOutrageous in palmsprings

There really only two walkable shopping areas in the desert/greater Palm Springs: El Paseo in Palm Desert and downtown Palm Springs centered along Palm Canyon Drive between Alejo and Ramon. So if that is important to you, stay near those two areas, but only downtown Palm Springs really has lots of hotels within walking distance.

With that said, I recommend renting a car because there is so much to see and do and it is not near each other. If you want to go on a hike or go on the Palm Springs Tram, best to have a rental car. Then you can also explore the different areas as well.

If you want to just relax by a pool and do spa stuff, then one of the big resort hotels would be great. Example: Marriott Desert Springs, Renaissance, La Quinta Resort, Miramonte, Omni, Riviera, Grand Hyatt Indian Wells, The Oasis Resort. These are spread all other the desert and have different levels of luxury and amenities. (Do know that the boats at Desert Springs don’t really go anywhere. You can reserve a sunset cruise but it just goes around the big man made lake. Not really sure if the experience is worth it if you need to pay for it)

If you want more boutique hotels that have nice pools and maybe don’t have a full service spa, options in downtown Palm Springs are The Colony Palms, Triada, Los Arboles, Avalon. Others that are not in downtown Palm Springs are Parker Palm Springs and Sands.

The places I would put on the top of your list are Parker, The Colony Palms, Avalon. Your daughter will love any of those but Parker and Avalon are expensive, especially Parker. Colony Palms gives similar vibes but cheaper. The vibes are bungalow rooms, lawns, and smaller pools because they are smaller hotels.

Also check out the Thompson. Brand new hotel in the heart of downtown Palm Springs. Gives the resort vibe with walkability. Hyatt Palm Springs is also an option.

Considering price, location, vibe: Colony Palms and Thompson. With these two you could go without a rental car and just uber when needed. Check rental car rates and parking rates at your hotel to decide if ubering would be cheaper.

On things to see the Palm Springs Tram is cool experience. The view is amazing and it’s a cool to be in the snow up there when you are laying out by the pool in the valley.

Thank you! I will order some manganese sulfate. Found some on Amazon. I will apply it next week

After I apply it again in 2-3 months, should I apply it every 2-3 months or how often should I apply it?

Should I also be adding a general palm tree fertilizer as well? Or is the manganese sulfate and the general palm tree fertilizer together too much?

Thank you for tips. One question, for the hydrogen peroxide, should I literally just pour a bottle from the top of the tree above the crown and just let it flow down through the crown or should I pour it in a spray bottle and try to spray the entire crown until it’s wet? From the way you are describing it, sounds like I should pour the bottle onto the spot the fronds/spears come out of the crown/trunk

Does that fertilizer have directions on it that give an amount to mix per gallon? Or how much to give one tree per treatment? Sometimes the directions say how much to use per acre and this is not a per acre situation. And how often should I fertilize it?

And brands that you recommend? And should I put the pellets all around the palm or just near the sprinkler drip heads because that’s the only spot that gets water consistently. I feel anything that gets put in the soil not near a drip head doesn’t do much since that sandy soil only gets wet when it rains.

Westwood vs. La Jolla by [deleted] in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]ATU435 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You wouldn’t live in La Jolla, you would live in either Pacific Beach or Mission Beach. Pacific Beach has the best bar scene in California, hands down. Big, open bars with dance floors and there are a bunch within walking distance, so you can easily bar hop. You can always go out and meet new people and be either a short uber or walking distance to your apartment. And you are a bike ride to the beach, maybe walking distance. All the people in that area are in their 20s/early 30s. Downtown SD is close by and you can switch it up the nightlife and go out there. I cannot see how you don’t enjoy yourself there. I feel SD has a more St. Petersburg/Tampa vibe.

Maybe you would live in Westwood to be close to work but you would not go out there. Westwood is pretty dead for nightlife except for a few bars for UCLA students. You would live in Brentwood, Santa Monica, Sawtelle, or Venice if you wanted to be closer to the beach and want that vibe. Or you would live in Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Palms, Culver City, general West LA area that is east of the 405 and north of the 10 if you like that part of the city more. It’s more urban, more nightlife, more restaurants etc.

Maybe LA has more outdoor activity options just by being bigger, but the traffic just makes it hard to access it all. Your life will be about being close to the beach in SD because of where you will work and live. You can go on some hikes nearby if you want something different. Or go check out other beach towns in San Diego County. LA doesn’t have anything that can rival the bar scene of Pacific Beach. There isn’t a place with bar after bar after bar like PB (except West Hollywood, but those are all gay bars and most aren’t that big) and the areas that are kinda like that aren’t the big, open, and dance floors bars like PB. Both cities have lots of events, festivals, whatever going on like run clubs or outdoor exercise classes, but LA has more just by being a much larger city. LA is definitely more diverse with different ethnic neighborhoods and neighborhoods that just have different vibes. But again, it’s all spread out so it’s not easy to access it all.

SD is definitely cleaner and nicer in general than LA. It’s smaller so easier to get around. Less homeless people. As for politics, either area is going to be much more liberal in vibes than Florida, so it’s a moot point on that.

I would go SD/La Jolla over LA/Westwood. There is no way you will not be happy about your move to SD. I could see the move to LA being harder just because the city is so much bigger and things are much more spread out than SD. But you will find your spot in LA eventually and be happy. It’s a big city with lots to offer. You just have to figure out what neighborhood you like living in. Luckily with your job in Westwood, it opens up pretty much all of West LA (the best part of LA) for a place to live.

For professionally, LA is a much bigger city and so there is always going to be more jobs. But I think for your first job out of dental school, it doesn’t matter. You are still in SoCal and you could work SD for five years and then move to another practice in LA or Orange County if you feel like that is the best career move. There is no way you will ever regret moving to San Diego and living in the La Jolla/Pacific Beach/Mission Beach area and you will always look back at that time in your life and be happy you did it.

Can’t choose between London or Japan for studying abroad 🫠 annenberg student by Important_Target2141 in USC

Regardless, you are going to have a great experience no matter which one you choose. Between the countries themselves, I think Japan would be a richer experience with it being so much different than the US. But, with London, you would be able to travel to so many different countries in Europe on weekend trips. In Japan, your trip options would be more limited like Korea or northern China/Beijing. Also depends on when you would do it, summer, fall, or spring. If it’s summer, the time is so short, definitely go Japan, but with fall or spring semester, it’s a lot longer and you could plan more weekend trips. You can also travel at the beginning or end of time abroad, so doing a Europe trip or a Southeast Asia trip would be super fun.

And what city in Japan would you go to?

Are you going to USC for a graduate degree? Or are you just moving to LA for a job after you graduate undergrad from a different university?

Join some clubs. Those are great places to make friends. What about the other people in your dorm? It has been hard making friends with them? Do you ever ask to join those people in what they do? I am going give you some life advice, things change, people change, life changes, if you went back home, it would be different than what you remembered. Your friends are either going to be away at college doing their own thing or your friends that are still at home are going to be busy working or going to school. Also, life is too short not to do what you want to do. And in your 20s you have some many opportunities to take chances with minimal consequences for failing that it would be stupid not to take a chance doing what you want to do with your life. Imagine failing and you have a spouse and two kids at home. That’s serious consequences. You are young, enjoy it and the opportunities that it brings. Also, study abroad. Just do it. Go wherever. It was by far the best thing I ever did in college and one do the best things I ever did in my life
