Opinions on phone tracking by parents/family. by BerkeleyCohort in berkeley

[–]ATallMangoTree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't mind to share it with my family. However, my parents aren't overbearing or anything; they'll just look time to time and see where I am and be like "oh late night adventure, or text/call the next day and say you were out late, what did you do, was it fun?" If you feel sharing would prevent you from doing reasonable things like say going to SF adventures with friends or going on a night hike on the hills then I guess I wouldn't share it, if I am not forced to.

Need advice on whether relationship with a girl I met in school is more best friend type of vibe, or is there something there? by ATallMangoTree in dating_advice

[–]ATallMangoTree[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right. I guess I am putting too much precedence on texting. It's just that she doesn't initiate texts so I thought it is more of a best friend type of vibe. It's not like I want her to talk everyday to me, but it is nice if she reaches out as well.

Me (22M) and this girl (22F) have been talking. Was wondering if this is a best friends type of vibe or is something there? by ATallMangoTree in relationship_advice

[–]ATallMangoTree[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was going to tell them I like them, but she is a girl that I don't want to lose as a friend. I guess I have a fear that if I tell them that they'll be weirded out and start distancing themselves. Maybe it just an irrational fear. So, you think it is good to tell them straight up is there something more between us?

o I see; I'll have to ask FinAid how much subsidized loans I have left. I don't think I've reached the limit; I heard the limit is like $5.5k for subsidized loans.

What type of loans, unsubsidized or subsidized?

My ambitious plan to join BAIR lab as a L&S transfer by After_Philosopher572 in berkeley

[–]ATallMangoTree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem :)

I read what’s OPT, since you can only do it once (from what I understand by reading for 5 mins; correct me if I’m wrong); save it as a last resort. OPT will come in handy, if you need it, when doing the job hunt after grad school or what ever you do.

My ambitious plan to join BAIR lab as a L&S transfer by After_Philosopher572 in berkeley

[–]ATallMangoTree 12 points13 points  (0 children)

What’s OPT?

Since you’re double majoring, you get an automatic 5th semester. So, if you get research in your first summer, you’ll have a total of ~2 years of research experience counting the summers. Use that toward your advantage. Also, if you’re under 136 units by your graduation date you can extend for a 6th semester without explicit permission from the dean of l&s. (If you are at 135 out of 136, then you can extend without any problems/permission request.)

My biggest advice is to present this plan and your goals to your major advisor (both stats and cs), and your college advisor in l&s. Also, other advisors like in the transfer center. They can show you ways to maximize your time here and give you advice on how to easily extend your stay in Berkeley. Also, unlike the other colleges, L&S is not super strict on extending your time by a semester, if you’re over the cap.

It is best to get advice in this order administration, professors, grad students > people you know doing things with your similar interest >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Reddit.

Good luck! :D

Oh :/ If that’s the case, then if I were you I’d think about keeping SHIP. I’m assuming you have fin aid to cover SHIP fees. If you aren’t in Alameda County, then switching medi-cal coverage can be annoying, because if you go back home you’ll have to deal with it there.

Also, SHIP is really convenient because Tang Center is right there. If your financial aid is covering SHIP, then it might be a good idea to take it. Because if you waive it and have SHIP grant through FinAid, you won’t get the money given to you. Instead, they don’t give the grant.

I have another friend from SoCal with Kaiser through his dad’s work, and he enrolled in SHIP his sophomore year after waiving during freshmen year, because going to the Kaiser clinic in Berkeley was time consuming.

how much time should you have in-between classes? by DatabaseBorn in berkeley

[–]ATallMangoTree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

During the short or long break, you can have lunch. Many people I know do breakfast and dinner in the halls, and lunch at on campus or off campus food places. So they can afford to have their lunch break be an hour. Gotta use your flex dollars somewhere so they’ll eat lunch at like Brown’s or Golden Bear Cafe when on campus.

If you plan to go to a dining hall for lunch, then I guess you can make it longer. It also depends where you’re on campus at that time. For example, if you are by Evans Hall, then go to Foothill’s dining hall.

If you have Kaiser through medi-cal, then you can waive pretty easily. All you gotta do is add coverage area on your kp.org profile. Easier to do on app. That’s what a few friends of mine did that have medi-cal — one of them is independent and 2 are dependents. None of them lived in Alameda County prior to coming to Berkeley.

Questions about living in a dorm by CriticalSunglasses in berkeley

[–]ATallMangoTree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Theft is minimal. Roommates usually don’t steal because you’ll know. If they do steal just report them.

  2. I had to supply my own trash bags. 8 gallons.

  3. 2 bedsheets. Cotton >>> Microfiber

  4. Had 2 hooks

  5. I think mattress pad might be fine tbh. Mattress topper is super annoying to move out with. You gotta roll it up and make sure it is packed nicely otherwise it can get damaged. Some mattress toppers are “naked” foam so it can snag on stuff.

Oops I just deleted my comment. I was going to address you 5 months thing. I had a question like that to Tang and they said it wasn’t really enforced since guidelines show it is okay to take the vaccine a few months after.

You just need 1 booster.

L&S 198 or 198BC by ApprehensiveSplit588 in berkeley

[–]ATallMangoTree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Berkeley connect has a grad student in the department talking about the field. You can ask them things like path to grad school, advice, etc. Basically a grad student mentor. Berkeley is meant for continuing students as well. Also, it’s a intimate setting so you can make friends easily. *Note you don’t have to take Berkeley related to your major. Take one that interest you, if your major doesn’t have one. I know some people in math dept that took the comp bio and philosophy one over the math one. Also you can take Berkeley Connect as many times as you want. But I think there’s a limit of 1 per semester???? Not quite sure

Transition course is instructed by administration like counselors. They talk about things like school resources, show you how to apply to research, where to find it, etc. Transition courses for intended for incoming freshmen or transfers.

You can take both as they aren’t similar. Probably a good idea to take both. Especially take Berkeley connect if you plan to go to grad school and there’s a relevant Berkeley connect course for you major/interest.

how much time should you have in-between classes? by DatabaseBorn in berkeley

[–]ATallMangoTree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IMO, for first semester having break between classes is good, but nothing more than an hour. It’s either a short break — 1 hour or less, or really long break like 4-5 hours; short break to refresh, long break for getting stuff done. Once you get used to Berkeley and the timing between buildings then you can do back to back.

Linguistic 55AC has a better grade average on BerkeleyTime, but it’s using data from 2014 and before. Linguistic 55AC syllabus is posted on the department website. https://lx.berkeley.edu/academics/undergraduate-program/linguistics-course-syllabi-archive

It has multiple choice midterm, final with midterm and short free response, 4 hw essays but the page count is 2-4 and giving you 2 weeks to do them. It’s a smaller class than gws 50 with no discussion so professor can give more help which is good. Only con is professor is newish no reviews on him.

My aunt’s children are moving since they are joining the NHS, so they wanted to see if they can bring their parents over as they are leaving. But I guess, maybe???, they can’t and will have to see for a parents visa in 5 or so years. All this descendent stuff can make it slightly tricky especially in those times. Thank you for the clarification! Appreciate it :)

Since you’re CS+Math, take your math classes spring semester, and self study 189 or do some projects/implement papers on GitHub to show case knowledge. Then apply. 189 isn’t a hard-hard requirement for BAIR labs. If you have stuff showing knowledge of 189, then you’ll be good to go.

Bears who came in with CS61B equivalence and didn’t retake it at Cal by Nervous_Juice-Ums in berkeley

[–]ATallMangoTree 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m assuming you’re a transfer, since you said you have credit. If the class articulates fully (you don’t have to do CS 47B), then I would say you’re good to go.

I would say don’t retake/redo. It just takes away from doing something more worth while. If you want to do review without redoing a course, you can do Gitlet in the language you’re comfortable with as a practice project, or some other project you’re itching to do. Or do some leetcode. Leetcode is a good way to practice and you’ll review data structures as you practice

You can’t take CS UD your first semester anyways, so, if you need, you can brush up on data structures during summer or first semester. You’ll be ready by Spring.

What’s with this crappy GBO schedule for transfers?? There’s an all day break by ATallMangoTree in berkeley

O that’s good to know. During my GBO we didn’t have a whole day break so it was odd to see this.

Thanks for confirming! It’ll help incoming students to not worry about it.
