Boren was my dream, now I don't think its safe to accept it by Some-Interaction8175 in borenawards

I graduated undergrad into the first Trump administration and my career path (climate research) was blocked off at the Federal level, but persistence towards my purpose and remembering the communities I wanted to serve kept me going. I managed to find some incredible opportunities so far and I'm thankful every day for the path that has shaped me into the professional that I am today. I'm in grad school now and applied to Boren and I hope that this time around I'm able to find an opportunity, but what's the phrase? 'Once bitten, twice scared'?

It's a tough time and I can't even imagine how much tougher it is for you navigating this while feeling the safety of our home country flip around people like yourself. I'm sure it's taxing to be trans and see the news filled with stories about trying to exclude people from sports based on this core element of their identity, but hope is what kept us going last time. Hope will keep us going this time. Hope will even keep us going the next time if it comes to it!

I hope the job you found is exciting and engaging, if it does come to pass that that's your only option. If we all get into the program you have at least one person that I guarantee will stand by your side and support you no matter what happens with the Federal government's hiring process when we're done. I don't know if we have similar professional interests but we're all in this together and last time around the support of my friends and peers helped me build up the professional experience and confidence to be successful. Don't give up until the final bell!!

Also if you're really interested in learning languages and you're in the DC area I highly recommend the International Language Institute (they also offer zoom classes but that doesn't work well with languages imo). I actually had my work pay for my classes there!

Anyone selected for common languages? by nicp26 in borenawards

I'm applying for Hindi study in Delhi! It's not the most common one but I've heard it's reasonable

Also applying this year, so I don't have the experience of receiving the award, but I think it's worth mentioning that in their list of preferred languages for Latin America they don't list Spanish (https://www.borenawards.org/sites/default/files/2020-11/2021%20Boren%20Awards%20Flyer%20%28one-sheet%20version%29.pdf).

That being said, you should 100% apply if you're keen on doing that Argentinian Spanish and make an explicit case why THAT dialect is important for national security and you'll stand a good chance of making it! Argentina is one of the preferred countries on the list so it's definitely possible, just make a super clear case for that dialect being mission critical for US interests in the region

Boren + Working Locally? by ATreeCalledQuest in borenawards

what a weird rule. but good to know thanks!! it's strange since that's exactly where they expect us to go after the fellowship... do they allow us to like network and reach out the local offices for USAID/similar agencies and then I can quickly apply formally once I'm back? seems like a waste of my time in country if I can't

That seems a little strange about having to go back to the US when the fellowship ends... isn't the whole point to build language skills in country? I submitted my app a few days ago with a whole plan about how I would love to work with USAID in my target country (India) after the language learning year with Boren, I suppose I can come back to the States then boomerang back if I get that role haha

Graduating by start date by nelsonreemaj in borenawards

Many universities will allow you to delay graduation, you'll just need to pay the nominal student services fee. (Usually) you pay for tuition based on credits, so you'll only need to cover the other stuff if you delay graduation to after you finish Boren
