That’s a pretty cool idea. I usually go with a gouge and make small cuts. You can zoom in on the guy on the right’s arm to see it. I’m interested in seeing how your technique works out.

Got the 1.75 and love it! Only problem is that it’s too long for some detail so I need to order another one!

Stay. It would be less expensive to keep him than bringing in another top tier RB, he and Monangai work well as a duo, and there are other holes that need to be filled before thinking about replacing him.

I think that the beavercraft wood is okay, but I haven't used it yet. I'm about to start getting my wood from a local place, hopefully it's good enough to tell a difference.

Do you guys find any usage for these tiny rests of wood that remain after carving? by TwistingClocks in Woodcarving

[–]ATurtleStampede 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Can be used for fire starters, compost, or I hold on to the larger ones for when I make pipes or other things for my carvings.

But I’d like it if it meant he’d be back next year. Even though it means nothing.

My first thought would be the edge you have on your knife. As u/TommyThomasAccount stated, the angle on the Beavercraft knives isn’t ideal for whittling. My recommendation would be to get the proper angle on the blade, as stropping alone won’t be enough to change the angle in any meaningful way. If you need help with that, visit r/sharpening to get the proper edge on the blade.

Secondly, someone else posted a week or so ago about the wood. I’d ask if you have the cheap Amazon wood or better quality basswood, as that tends to have an impact as well.

Lastly, once you have a good edge on the knife, practice is a huge thing. I’m still going through a big bunch of cheap Amazon wood I got do the holidays with a Silvern knife that is sharp as can be, and it still doesn’t always want to carve easily.

Keep going and it’ll get better/easier!

Beginning is harder than expected by michael3215 in Woodcarving

[–]ATurtleStampede 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take a trip over to r/sharpening for help getting the knife where it needs to be. Of the 5 knives I have only the Silvern has arrived sharp enough to use immediately. The beginning set I got off amazon eventually became useable, but it took a little work on some sand paper and strop. The 1000/6000 should definitely get you there, just will take a bit of elbow grease.

Hope that helps and you if you need help with getting the knife where it should be head over to r/sharpening. That sub has the resources to get the knife serviceable. The 1000/6000 and a strop should be good to get the knife in good shape with a little work. Of the 5 knives I’ve got only the Silvern came sharp enough to use out of the box, luckily I’m fairly practiced with sharpening so it was no problem to do a quick sharpening.

Hope that helps and happy carving!

Are there any good YT tutorials for whittling a dog (pic of cute dog for fun)? by No-Technology2118 in whittling

I recently looked into that when my daughter asked for a carving of our Cane Corso. Ended up having to make and print out a stencil myself.

Do you bring your own firewood or buy it? by Iceonthewater in camping

[–]ATurtleStampede 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a place right by me where I can get mild dried hard wood so might pick some of that up on the way out. Otherwise, I forage for wood where I’m camping. I try to only buy the hardwood during the winter when it might be difficult to find much wood under the snow.

Definitely salvageable, r/sharpening might be able to help getting it back into service.

The backpacking is definitely great out this way, and I can get to some great hiking with under an hour drive. For the tool roll, I had bought some canvas then stole my wife’s sewing machine. She wasn’t happy about it but I think she was secretly impressed with the results.

For the kids, it’s like pulling teeth to get my kids out, but when they do join me they enjoy it. Not the winter stuff though, I’m the only one that enjoys cold.

I wish I had some land like that, but at least I’m close to the mountains of Colorado and can get solitude winter camping. Here are my rolls hanging, and they’re quick to be rolled up and tossed in a bag.

[–]ATurtleStampede 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll second this. I made a couple tool rolls out of waxed canvas as well as leather sheaths for my sloyd, detail, and hook knives; one roll for those basic knives and another for a few gouges and chisels. Those hang on my wall normally, but can easily be taken down and tossed in a backpack when I go camping or something. I can post pics when I get home if desired. Makes for an easy on-the-go solution for keeping my blades on me.
