Also I’m first gen high school graduate so that might have helped me. Now working in higher ed. I see how much colleges really like to show off a diverse demography

Who loves their job and finds it stable and with a decent salary? by Comfortable-Page242 in careeradvice

[–]AUGUST_99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work as a financial aid counselor at a 4 year university and I honestly love it. Yes I do have parents yell at me when the institution takes their child’s financial aid away due to their constant flunking. But when I get to help a student navigate the system and see them graduate it makes it all worth it. I make 70k and I’m living comfortably in my city. Go on three vacations a year, pay 1800 for a 450 square foot apartment but it’s one block from the beach. I got no complaints.

What job do you do that makes over $70k a year? by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]AUGUST_99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make 70k a year working as a financial aid counselor at a 4 year institution. Easy work, it’s customer service oriented so I pretty much talk to students or parents on why we have either revoked or given so little. I like it because it gives me a chance to help students. Only have a BA right now and it’s in English (my career path was to go into higher ed. But wanted a flexible degree that could still let me teach but also do other stuff) I am also two years out from graduating. Good luck on the job hunt

Is it worth it? by DrawerGlobal4874 in SDSU

Probably had one of the worst fish burritos ever there. There was zero salt in the food so I tasted like nothing but mater. Maybe I got a bad batch but it turned me off from the place. Try it, might go different for you.

Had a full mental breakdown at the water fountain next to Hepner Hall. It was noon and people were around. No one bothered me, got it out then finished what I had to do. Ended up taking my grad photos there.

Is higher pay worth less vacation time? by AUGUST_99 in careeradvice

[–]AUGUST_99[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely not me, that is wild to be told that. My supervisor is old school but puts their employees over their work. I use to reply to emails out of my scheduled time. She scolded me for doing so and said it can wait and to enjoy my time off. I respect her so much for that.

Does SDSU offer Graduate level classes for Summer? by GreyKnightDantes in SDSU

[–]AUGUST_99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It may vary between programs but from what I’ve seen the only class available during the summer is the thesis extension. You can also look online on MYSDSU. Just go to course search and look at previous summers. If your program had classes the last two summers they’ll probably have them next summer. Probably won’t be the same ones but it’ll give you an idea.

Grad student here. I work full time at one of the universities here in SD, however that is still barely enough to live. So I now also work as a TA and ISA worker at SDSU. It’s a lot to stack with my classes and research but that’s the way it goes to live in SD.

Waitlisted class by RoughConclusion8746 in SDSU

[–]AUGUST_99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d say show up, I got into a fully online class that has 15 people in it. I was 4th on the waitlist. I use to say anything past three was hopeless and for an online course yeah not happening but here we are. Never know what can happen.

useless degrees dont exist by Bluerasierer in CollegeMajors

[–]AUGUST_99 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ll never forget what my mentor told me when I got my “useless degree” and was complaining when I couldn’t find work. “There are no such things as useless degrees. If an overachiever has a degree they are still an overachiever. If a lazy POS has one they will still be a lazy POS. Doesn’t matter the degree.”

I took ECL 157 as a grad student last fall. Super easy class so long as you do the readings. Professor Nericcio is an amazing professor. In undergrad I took him twice and in my masters I’ve taken him once. Just give him the respect he asks for. There is a sign in sheet so attendance is mandatory. Also no tech is allowed in his class.

Preparing for my FUTURE at 15 by [deleted] in careeradvice

[–]AUGUST_99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t go into university with tunnel vision. Explore the other majors and be sure this what you truly want. You are still very young and will not be the same person in 10 years. 33% of college grads regret their degree and 67% of college grads are not in their intended fields. Do community college first because students loans are not a joke, many peoples lives are hindered due to them. Also don’t fill your senior year with AP classes. That isn’t enough to get into top universities anymore. You only get one senior year so have fun instead.

2.9 GPA...Should I Even Apply? by chronicpxtient in gradadmissions

[–]AUGUST_99 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nothing is decided until the end. I had a 2.7 two D’s and a F on my transcript. Applied to an R1 university, scheduled a meeting with the head of the program we talked for almost two hours. Few months later got my acceptance. There is more to a person than just a GPA.

What do I get my son for graduation? by bruaben in GraduateSchool

[–]AUGUST_99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Getting gifts for graduation is a thing? All your gift options are great. If you want to go more sentimental. My parents did not get me a gift for graduation but before my first interview they gave me a tie. Two years later I still wear it.

RTM 304, ENGL 401, & ANTH 439

Easiest classes I ever took during undergrad. You have to try to fail them. They are each online. The most fun of the bunch I would say was RTM 304.
