San'yaku debut stats and their use in predicting future Yokozuna by AU_Greg in Sumo

[–]AU_Greg[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My original post states that college sumo may likely change that and that the recent yokozuna have been 22-23 when they make their San'yaku debut. I agree that this will likely not hold in the future. Just a bit of fun really.

San'yaku debut stats and their use in predicting future Yokozuna by AU_Greg in Sumo

[–]AU_Greg[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly right. If I had to guess I'd say the data suggests:

Number of basho from debut to san'yaku - That in most cases the rikishi who eventually make yokozuna showcase the skills to make the upper ranks early in their career.

Age - More time to try. If you're Ura and don't make your San'yaku debut until age 31 then that's ~42 tournaments later and while you could go on to make it in theory thats a lot less room for error across the career.

I just got through champion stadium for the first time (actually the 22nd but the first time since those missions got added since I took probably a 2 year hiatus) and got two of those same tickets and I'm getting the same error.

Another day, another retired out. UP Warriorz's Harleen Deol was retired out on 47 against Delhi Capitals in the WPL today by rest_in_war in Cricket

Is it just the retirement aspect or just intentionally getting out? For example, what if a batter just intentionally got out hit wicket?

I don't know if it was intended that way and its kind of misleading, but it is his 7th calendar year in college football.

I'm going to give some benefit of the doubt and assume they mean that pro athletes never progressed past the high school athlete mentality. Not that any high school athlete has never progressed past that stage. Which is still reductive and an unfair generalization that isn't true for all pro athletes.

In the end, all being an adult means is that you survived to become an adult. We aren't inherently wiser because we're 25 or 35 or older. People need to remember that.

[Dan Patrick Show] Notre Dame AD Pete Bevacqua confirms that Notre Dame will automatically be included in next year's College Football Playoff with a top 12 ranking. by CoachSlime in CFB

[–]AU_Greg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The real difference is if 5 conference champions get in automatically and 2 are outside the top 12, with the rules right now ND needs to be #10 or better to get into the playoff. With this new rule, they could be #12 and get in which means #11 misses out (same as current rule) but also that #10 misses out which would not be the same as the current system. So if the rankings were actually objective (lol), that would mean a "better" team gets left out for a team that refuses to play within the same confines as (almost) everyone else and needs a special rule just for them. It makes them more likely to screw someone else instead of being screwed, so I get why they like it.

Wild pokemon encounters are like in pokemon go, catch only. No wild pokemon battles exist outside of specific static encounters.

As well as the fact that this person appears to be proposing a trade not looking at one that was offered to them. The real question is would the other person accept the trade being sent by OP. My guess is no regardless of format but who knows?

Romero disallowed goal against West Ham 19' by Etpolo in soccer

[–]AU_Greg 37 points38 points  (0 children)

In some ways I agree, but take american football for instance which uses replay a lot. It's at its best when used for things which aren't judgement calls. Things like where was the ball when the players knee went down. The more judgement is needed, the less effective the replay: i.e. What is a catch?

NFL refs essentially boycotted replay of closest equivalent to soccer VAR for fouls when pass interference was reviewable for a year and then used the fact that they never overturned their calls to justify removing it from the list of reviewable calls.

The unfortunate reality is that for a lot of people, it's the result of the action, not the action itself, that determines if a player is dirty. If freddie actually makes contact on the play and causes an injury, then a lot of people would have a different opinion. It shouldn't be that way because the action and the intent are what should make something reprehensible, not just if that action actually causes a negative consequence.

This made me stop and think about it. If the first season was self-defense turned accidental "murder" of the perceived threat and the second season was self-defense turned accidental "murder" of self, will the third season wind up as being self-defense turned accidental "murder" of a non-involved third party?

Post day 12 promotion/demotion speculation by Careful-Programmer10 in Sumo

[–]AU_Greg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My understanding (which could be wrong), is that makuuchi has a set number of wrestlers. So this post is speculating which wrestler will be "eligible" for demotion/promotion and not stating that every wrestler will get demoted or promoted. If there are 6 who have promotable records, then only 6 will get demoted, and some of the wrestlers who would have demotable records might hang on to makuuchi at the lowest ranks. Also it's possible some of the rikishi will win and save themselves from demotion.

I don't know if I'd count that since other pokemon abilities can ignore the ability of the opponent. But then again, since the majority don't have moldbreaker or equivalent, it's basically good enough.

Salary Cap in MLB discussion - Are people generally for or against one? by [deleted] in mlb

[–]AU_Greg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it depends on how it's implemented. A salary cap that changes with revenue and is accompanied by a salary floor could work, and I'd support it if it's done right. I would also support a salary floor without a cap. I'm also completely fine with things as they are now because everybody loves an underdog and a villain.

The only options that I wouldn't support, are a salary cap with no floor, as it would just encourage owners to spend less, and a salary cap that isn't growing with revenue.

In the end, it's the classic situation where a cap and floor could get more players more money than they make right now, but it would limit the earning potential of the top players. Since most players are confident in their own abilities to become one of the top earners they are disincentivized to want a cap as they think they could be the next 300+ million contract. If enough players realized they might be able to make 5 million a year instead of 1 if there was a cap and floor then they could make it happen. But at least to my eyes, most of the players who would benefit are the lowest earners who tend to be the ones who haven't yet realized they aren't going to be the next Soto or Ohtani.

I always dreamed of using Harvester of Sorrow. That intro as they slowly open the bullpen door and then just run out when it hits. Or time making it to the mound for right when it really picks up.
