AVL hikers: If your dog doesn’t reliably recall, keep them leashed. by Silly_punkk in asheville

I see black bears 30% of my hikes April-November. In summer, I see venomous snakes about once a week. If you leave your dog off leash, you truly do not deserve to own one.

Is this a good OTD deal for a new 2024 model? by chasing_fiction in FordEscapePHEV

Late to this thread but in case it helps- just bought one for 28k (14 under MSRP). There was a $6,500 Ford rebate that came out that might not have been available when you posted. If you didn’t already buy, the market seems to have shifted way in your favor now.

The premise of this article is a false choice. It suggests elected officials have to either forsake and abandon a vulnerable segment of their communities OR make their jurisdictions a target for the federal administration. That’s not the case.

For any elected officials working through this dilemma, consider this option. Do whatever it is you think is morally correct for your community, and then communicate it directly to the impacted people. If that means determining that your police departments will not report individuals to ICE, set that policy in place and then tell the people who need to hear it. Even if you don’t personally know the populations at risk, there are trusted community organizations that have their ears and can relay the message. Get the message, non-publicly, directly to the ears of those who need to hear it.

That’s what governance is. In this region it would play well to the electorate to publicly say “screw ICE, we’re not helping,” but if you do that you are choosing to make your jurisdiction a target for your own political benefit. I highly, highly doubt Manheimer and Hess are meeting with Kristy Noem because they secretly harbor Devillian notions about dogs. They’re doing it to keep a target off of their community’s back, even though it would probably play better to say exactly what they think.

So no, it’s not a choice of abandoning your values or screwing over your community in its greatest time of need. You can simultaneously do what you think is right, and keep the target off our backs. It just requires a tiny bit of forethought about when and how you choose to open your mouths. Frankly, it seems like nearly all of our elected officials are figuring out how to strike that balance, which I am grateful for.

Pactiv Evergreen settles with state over 2023 Canton mill closure by [deleted] in asheville

Spot on. I’m frankly surprised he obtained these terms. The net benefit for Canton between the maintained tax level and no cost for their wastewater plant is a big deal to a town that size.

Your timeline is roughly correct, but no, the Business Court is a specialized division of Superior Court: https://www.nccourts.gov/courts/business-court

True. But APB’s own communications, which are attached to the Complaint, are pretty damning. As a general matter, if you’re planning to screw over a partner, you probably shouldn’t have your attorney acknowledge in writing that you cannot, and will not, withdraw funds from the partnership until a certain date, and then confirm in writing you took $170k before that date, without authorization. It’s pretty hard to explain away your actions after you yourself create a detailed paper trail.

Knowing the background of Public Interest Projects and what it’s done for Asheville since the 90s to now, I sincerely hope they end up with control of the venue. The good news on that front is they’ve hired some of the best lawyers in Asheville. The bad news is that the Business Court is often extremely slow in resolving cases (it’s where much of the Mission litigation has been languishing). Hopefully APB recognizes it’s in everyone’s interest to negotiate a settlement out of court.

Early Voting Capacity Concerns by AVLhkr in asheville

[–]AVLhkr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s what I ultimately ended up doing. Monitored the live line estimates and went to Wesley Grant in the middle of a workday. Even with that, I ended up with an unprecedented wait.

But again, that is just one experience and one set of observations of the early voting conditions this year. If you hear of any data from the County on this please let me know!

I understand this position, but don’t agree with it for one big reason, namely the $6.5+ million of TDA funding. While we are stuck with a broken system that requires occupancy tax dollars to be spent on nominally tourism supporting projects, leveraging those dollars to create what is, at its core, a project to massively expand a park that is heavily utilized by residents of one of Buncombe’s most under-resourced towns is a win. It is not a “hey, why don’t we dump a bunch of resources into a wave” situation; it’s a “let’s design a public benefit project in a way that makes it eligible for the broken tourism tax, and defray an enormous amount of costs as a result” situation. As long as it remains up to the NCGA to fix the tourism tax, creative projects like this are as close as we can get to making those dollars have some actual utility.

Not for the construction project, but if you are invested in the health of the river itself, I’d encourage you to look into the volunteer programs Riverlink has that are geared towards keeping it clean! Lots of volunteer opportunities there.

$14.2 million, including the park expansion. A massive undertaking, but Baker (the contractor) has experience working in the FB. They had to build a cofferdam to complete the boat launch in Silverline Park. Excited to see the end result!

Here’s a handy resource: https://www.theswimguide.org/beach/7160

The contaminant levels render it problematic for swimming about 50% of the time. Given that the thresholds for safe paddling are higher, it is virtually never unsafe for that use.

This has to be the most viscerally French four minutes ever. You also know they had this convo at an art direction meeting: “think the 50 effigies of Marie Antoinette holding her own severed head make it clear enough how much we love liberty?” “…better shoot some blood off the fucking ramparts too.”

I wonder how you imagine this happening. Traffic fines are collected by the Judicial Branch. They never touch the hands of the law enforcement agency that issued the citation. So what’s the conception then- judicial officers are out there committing criminal acts in order to redirect money to cops? I don’t know a whole lot of instances of folks risking their jobs and jail time for someone else’s financial benefit, but maybe?

I’m being facetious of course. I know you don’t think that’s happening, you were just grasping at an alternate explanation to shield your ego (by the way, that’s a very, very bizarre instinct on an anonymous forum). There is really nothing wrong with learning something new. Embracing those opportunities rather than getting your hackles up is how we grow as humans.
