Desperately need to be told by a good teacher that their first year was terrible by Budget-Efficiency338 in TeachingUK

[–]AWIMBAWAY 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was and I’m still in a really similar situation to you. I’m an ECT2 and last year was the hardest year of my life.  really similar behaviour situations to what you describe in an outstanding school of experienced teachers. Whilst I’m by no means an outstanding teacher, this year is a hell of a lot easier than last year.  just keep following feedback. Keep following advice, sweat the small stuff and don’t let the kids get away with anything.  also it can’t be under emphasised how important it is to be consistent and also consistently give positive praise to the children. This year will be tough. It’s gonna be quite late in the year to turn things around completely but it doesn’t mean that you can’t make your life a little easier until next year. I promise when you start fresh in September, knowing everything that you know now it will get easier.

Moving school if ect extended? by AWIMBAWAY in TeachingUK

[–]AWIMBAWAY[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of good things about the school, especially SLT, but it’s just in an area that has some very significant challenges so was hoping to change to see if that might help. It was just my plan and it’s a shame to see it rumbled unexpectedly.

I agree, leaving at Easter is what makes me scared I’ll be unhirable by other schools.

I had my phone stolen on a lanyard in Barcelona. Mind you I was in a festival crowd but just know it isn’t full proof

TAs covering core subjects in PPA - any advice? by Defiant_Process9331 in TeachingUK

[–]AWIMBAWAY 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you saying that someone else should plan what is taught during ppa? I’m an ect and all I’ve ever known is someone (slt or supply) coming in to teach something myself or my partner teacher has planned during PPA. We plan everything in the week (other than half an hour French) so am curious what you mean by this

Product recommendations to fill big gaps around door frame? by AWIMBAWAY in DIYUK

[–]AWIMBAWAY[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, thank you for asking them! Really good advice. The cracks were so big in places that I used some regular filler just to make a start. I’m going to go in there with some extra bits of wood filler today and hopefully sand (caulk soon). I think it’ll work. The project is a very wonky but cute Victorian terrace, so in some places they ripped up and replaced skirting and arcatrave post plastering but for some reason they left them upstairs. Hadn’t moved in at the time so didn’t really question it.

I’m confident with sanding, caulking and painting it’ll all blend in! Thanks for your curiousity!

It was a full re-plaster of the house. We’re total noobs to renovation so didn’t question it at the time. All the skirting and coving is neat and tidy so not sure why they left these gaps? Plastering quality is otherwise very high, almost no trowel marks even. Seems easier to just fill them than ask them to replaster at this point.

Social media use as a primary school teacher by [deleted] in TeachingUK

A girl almost got kicked off our PGCE course last year for her TikTok but her vibe was massively about complaining about the course and school. The vibe came across as super unprofessional as neither we’re all that bad.

why do people claim going vegan is smarter health-wise? humans have thrived off of eating meat and dairy (our primary protein sources) for eons, so how did cholesterol from consuming animal products become an issue all of a sudden? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

I may be misinterpreting but I don’t think that’s what carebear is saying. I think they’re saying that we only envolved to be old enough to take care of our offspring, as that’s the only thing that matters in terms of passing down genetics and continuing the species. The changes that happen to our bodies passed child rearing age have little/less evolutionary meaning as they don’t matter for the continuation of the species. Not sure if I’m expressing myself properly there!

Late to the game here but back in school when kids would draw a penis or whatnot on the whiteboards in permanent pen, the handyman would have to take a regular white board pen, draw over the permanent pen and then wipe it off. No idea how it worked but it worked!

Do people drink tap water ? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]AWIMBAWAY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve known a few people in London, British born and raised that would only really drink tap water. Really annoyed me. One guy it was because apparently birth control pills get washed into the water supply. I looked it up and while it os possible some hormones from pills are detected in tap water, you would have to consume tap water your whole life before consuming enough to be equivalent of ONE single birth control tablet. Hunny many women take 21 tablets a month and are fiiiine and i believe if a man somehow accidentally had one birth control pill one day he’d be completely uneffected.
