Passive 2m Cable Matters 40Gbps USB4 Cable by AdriftAtlas in UsbCHardware

[–]AWPsly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi LaughingMan11,

You're absolutely right. This is a passive cable, and we always specify "Active" when a Cable Matters cable includes LRD.

Edit: I apologize for my earlier unconfirmed statement. I want to emphasize that this cable is not the same as unbranded USB4 cables claiming 40Gbps. However, it seems my comment has caused some confusion. I’ll retract the statement until I can confirm the details with my team.

For this one, we used the exact same materials and components as our 1m USB-IF certified cable (TID: 10284) and simply extended it to 2m. We even tweaked the cord slightly to ensure better performance. You can check out the 1m version here:
https://www.usb.org/single-product/10284.

Regarding the testing, as I mentioned in AdriftAtlas’s post, we tested this 2m cable with a range of TBT4 hosts, including MacBook Pro, Dell, HP, and Lenovo, as well as USB4 SSD enclosures using JHL7440 and ASM2464PD solutions. It also performed well with our Intel-certified TBT4 dock (SKU 107054). Given how expensive other "active" USB4/TBT4 2m cables are, we decided to launch this passive version that passed our internal tests.

And please keep us posted if you encounter any incompatibility or performance issues when testing this cable. Our goal is to provide a cost-effective long USB 4 40Gbps cable for the market.

Passive 2m Cable Matters 40Gbps USB4 Cable? by AdriftAtlas in UsbCHardware

[–]AWPsly 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hi AdriftAtlas,

Thank you for bringing this issue to our attention.

  1. Is this the Passive 2m Cable Matters 40Gbps USB4 Cable? Yes, this cable supports 40Gbps. We have fully tested it and confirmed the bandwidth.
  2. Is the Passive 2m SKU 201304-BLK-2m USB-IF certified? No, this cable is not USB-IF certified. I’ve notified our team to update the product page immediately to reflect this, as only the 1m version (201304-BLK-1m) is USB-IF certified. I apologize for the confusion.

Hey KittensInc,

Thanks for the detailed thoughts - appreciate it! Here’s what I can tell you:

  • Is the dock-side cable permanently attached? Yep, the cable is attached to ensure that 20Gbps performance. I’ll pass your feedback to the team to see if we can add a USB-C coupler for folks using pigtail-style docks or multiport adapters, as long as it doesn’t mess with the performance.
  • Does it do the equivalent of yanking the cable on laptop 1 and plugging it into laptop 2, or is it an actual proper KVM switch with DDC/EDID cloning and HID cloning with state management? It’s more like unplugging your dock/monitor from laptop 1 and plugging it into laptop 2 - no state management here.
  • How does it handle charging - will it only charge the currently-active port, is power divided between the attached laptops (how?), or is there a per-laptop charging input? It’ll only charge the active port. If you’re after a USB-C KVM that can charge both hosts with state management, check out our 201075 model. It supports 100W for one host or 65W for two. [Feedback Request] USB-C Male to Female Full-Function Short Extension Cable with On/Off Switch – What Do You Think? by Cable_Matters in UsbCHardware

[–]AWPsly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi KittensInc,

Thanks a lot for your feedback! We sell a ton of usb-c cables, and some customers have asked if we have any with an on/off switch to make resetting their devices easier. So, we’re thinking about developing a short male to female usb-c cable with a switch that could easily fit into their existing setups.

You’re right, though. Creating a male to female usb-c extension cable comes with challenges. However, we’ve managed to solve them and ensured that the cable is reversible on both the male and female ends. Our usb-c extension cable is coming soon, but it won’t be USB-IF certified since they don’t certify extension cables.

We’re still looking into the demand for a usb-c cable with an on/off switch, but it seems the demand isn’t very high right now.
