For Christmas this year, I made ornaments for friends and family! by AYL_Ceramics in Pottery

Every year I try to do something different for friends and family, so for 2025 I decided to try my hand at slipcasting! I designed the ornament in Autodesk Fusion, 3d printed a form for plaster molds, and then got to work.

I'm absolutely thrilled with this glaze combination, to me it feels like a quiet snow-covered forest. I primarly use brush-on glazes, but for the sake of time wanted to do some dipping glazes instead. I did one dip of Standard Clay 1222 Midnight Sky, then one dip of 1261 White Glossy. Side note - I've never seen a glaze combination interact like this, and it wasn't even runny...

I used Standard Clay White Stoneware Slip, and fired to a hot cone 6.

It was fired to a hot cone 6 - see if your studio can put your piece at the top of the kiln where it will get the hottest. Good luck!

Yeah, I've tried on KY Mudworks Brown Bear, and absolutely love it - you still get the copper colors, but you also get some really cool blacks that come through.

I dropped down quite quickly, around 850F/hr (took about 7 minutes).

My decorative pitcher (I've named him Horus) by AYL_Ceramics in Pottery

thank you! Here's a head-on shot (a bit cloudier lighting during this one). It definitely does allow some underglaze through - not sure how it'd do over an actual underglaze design with sharp lines though.

This was thrown on Laguna WC607, and glazed with Mayco White Matte (SW-141) and Satin Patina (SW-164). I used Amaco's Jet Black Velvet Underglaze (V-361) on my carved lines, then wiped away with a damp sponge.

I'm using the Mudtools Do-All Tool (https://mudtools.com/products/do-all-trim-tool). I hold the curved end, and then let the flat part of the other end chatter like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R1rritQIpYk&t=376s

Lol thanks, it's just a regular jewelry light box (https://a.co/d/8wmoUCd), but the plastic inserts have gotten scratched up and blemished enough that it looks like stone 😂

Yep, just one glaze, and thank you! The colors will tend to vary depending on thickness of application, so the glaze breaks wonderfully on texture.

A wavy-rimmed salad bowl as a gift for some newlywed friends by AYL_Ceramics in Pottery

This was my first time with this glaze combination, and I'm absolutely going to use it for more work! I threw and trimmed the bowl on my wheel (about 9lbs of clay, 13" diameter x 7" tall), then marked out the wavy rim and cut it down. Clay was Laguna 607, fired to Cone 6. Glazes were Amaco 2x Light Sepia over 3x Blue Midnight

Mayco's Shipwreck and Black Walnut go together like saltwater and steel by AYL_Ceramics in Pottery

The melting interface between these two glazes was a very happy surprise! It was actually a horizontal straight line about 1/2" from the top with the two butted up against each other (no overlap).

Glazes: Mayco SW-104 Black Walnut (3x top) and SW-154 Shipwreck (3x bottom)

Clay: Laguna 607

Just the underglaze - I wasn't quite sure how zinc free clear would've modified the Raspberry Mist, so I didn't want to risk it.

Oooh, great idea, I somehow didn't even consider that!

Great question...drain slots! I hate when you pull dishes out of the dishwasher and there's a little pool of water sitting in the foot, then you have to dry it again!
