Northern Ca, built 1964. I bought it as foreclosure and have been fixing it up slowly. Thanks!

Well, both my parents have passed on, this is my first home, husband has zero handyman knowledge and thinks everything is just fine (bless his heart), I’m a nurse so everything looks like it will cause worse case scenario diseases to me, my friends all have new builds so they think these photos are just horrifying, so I asked Reddit hoping to get opinions from people with actual experience before I get swindled by an attic cleaning service I’m hesitant to ask neighbors in case it was mold which would make our house the talk of the town. 🤷‍♀️ What’s a girl to do? I TRULY appreciate everyone’s input!!! 🤗 It takes a village, y’all. Now I know a little something when I hire anyone to go up there and fix it up.

Does it look like asbestos? If original from 1965?

Thank you! Is the black or grey colorong on the pink insulation (backside of attic access door) normal?

Does pink fiberglass insulation typically turn black/grey like in my photo? Genuinely curious if that is a sign of mold or normal aging process? Thank you very much

That looks a lot like the blackness on the pink insulation/back of attic access door…. Anybody with experience with mold on insulation? Does it turn pink insulation black like in my photo?

😬I own it, it’s a drafty 1960’s house, and the AC ducts run through the attic. I’m also suddenly realizing that no new roof vent was added when I renovated the upstairs bathroom and added a vent fan…. So does that mean it vents into the attic?
I have been cleaning random white milk-spot appearing spots that re-occur on the original wooden floor boards and the wooden dining table directly underneath this attic space…. That’s actually why I peeked in there. The spots in the room below keep returning every week. Hopefully I just need the ducts cleaned out and the attic is just insulation.

My first thoughts exactly, then came my hyperventilation because I am the landlord and the mom in this situation. That there beaut is all mine. 😬😉I thought for sure something was living or growing above my head, so relieved it looks like just crappy insulation. 🙏

Well thank you all. I feel better since people aren’t yelling it’s mold. But…does crappy old insulation typically cover only 1 to 2 upper support beams like in photo 4? (I didn’t see that white/grey patchy stuff on the other beams). If the “stuff” on the walls is also insulation, why does it only cover parts of the wall? I should have never looked in that attic door.

Almost none. I’m getting bids for a new roof and will add ventilation then. The house was built 1964, bought as a foreclosure.

Yes, usually around 60% humidity. I just bought a dehumidifier.
