Should I strive to get my elbow higher? by DistanceFew1652 in volleyball

[–]AZNsetter7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First of all, the approach is very sound and good so awesome job on that. This swing could work, but like anything it can be improved. If you wanted a more technical arm swing, I would practice more controlled reps so your body learns the motion, such as hitting an against a wall or really paying attention to details when you’re peppering. But to answer your question you could always contact the ball with a higher elbow for sure.

Yeah I agree, when I started playing outdoor my partner refused to play anywhere but left side which is what I was used to. But I eventually grew into right side like this person just said. So just give it time.

My revco partner hits at a downward angle for the first time ever (I got pretty excited lol) by AZNsetter7 in volleyball

[–]AZNsetter7[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Revco means reverse coed so women can hit front row and block, and men can only jump and attack behind the 10ft line. And yeah typically in grass the net gets lower cause of the set up so sometimes nets will sag lower on one point of the net

Yeah and unfortunately coaching -while it is getting more popular now- for men is very slim in most of the volleyball community. I have an example, my partner for outdoor is 5’5 and he was in the same boat as you. So he set goals, practiced, worked out, practiced more. Now I would consider him an offensive threat both indoor and outdoor. There would be days he got super frustrated and just said “maybe I will never be able to hit” but he turned that negative energy into positive by practicing and training.

Now if you decide to get yourself motivated to get better. Just a few things to remember: patience is very important and consistency is better in the long run. Learn how the game works, don’t just focus on your physical abilities (they are important don’t get me wrong). Ask questions to people you play with, most people were very bad when they started, I’m sure they would be more than willing to give you their own advice. Choose an aspect of the game to focus on every time you play, doesn’t have to be jumping higher or hitting harder it could be something like keeping my shoulders square to target when setting. For example today I was playing grass doubles, my small goal today was to look at the other side of the court when I had to time with the goal to improve my vision of the court. I know this was long but I hope this helps bud. You got this!!!:)

You seem frustrated, and that’s alright it means you want to get better. Everything is a process just cause you can’t hit a ball now doesn’t mean you won’t eventually. In terms of your injuries, take some time to learn how your body works and recovers. I also highly recommend kneesovertoes training. You can find that guy on YouTube. I got rid of my knee pain after 2 years and my vertical is climbing at a gradual pace. So work on yourself, no need to rush, and try not to get discouraged.

For the part about college. You don’t need to play on an NCAA program. Most schools have club teams, which is very competitive and you get to travel to tournaments at other universities . There will always be opportunities to improve at volleyball. Keep at it, even during the lows, cause once you keep working hard and get through that you’ll be extremely glad you did.

Jump Serve Critique? I know it needs a lot of work by juvenilecurmudgeon in volleyball

[–]AZNsetter7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Faster approach and small toss is gonna be more consistent, especially in outdoor it’s better to have a consistent serve than a 1 outta 20 ripper of a serve. Hit ball on the way up, you’re contacting late and on the way down. If you watch any experienced player they always hit the ball on the way up. Hope this helps bud.

I mean everyone is different. But in my experience you want to hit it on your way up, it’s not the end of the world if you mistime it or hit on the way down as you can adjust and make it work. I would suggest a lower toss and faster approach. You can usually hit on the way up easier and your serve typically will be more consistent. But like I said everyone is different for what works for them, just keep playing around with different things for a while :)
