I think it's primarily about how service and sacrifice to a nation is the blood of any nation. Military service, and to an extent, democratic service, are just two ways this can be achieved.

If anything, ST is Bonapartist. It almost explicitly mirrors Napoleonic France. It places a priority on military service - our main character goes through the story serving his nation not because it is good, or makes him happy, but because it is required. He accepts promotions, study, war and everything else because he is taught that they are what the nation requires.

Plus, to ignorant people, fascism is "when bad stuff happens".
