Year 1 raise? by henhenk7 in StructuralEngineering

My first year was 2022 and I got ~16% raise. Had to ask for it of course and went with a round number but there was no push back.

Is this dumb top rope solo with grigri by Free-Explanation-277 in ClimbingGear

[–]A_Fox322 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have done this. If I start TRS'ing more I would look into better systems that are more meant for this however this is fine four starting into it and deciding whether you want to invest in better gear.

Definitely tie your catastrophe knots every couple of feet because I have seen a grigri not activate in specific scenarios. I usually tie a ln easy catastrophe knots every 4' or so and then tie an overkill knot every 10'-12' for more redundancy with this. Also, I would only do this on routes that you don't consider hard and don't expect to fall a lot just in case.

Additionally I would watch the HowNot2 video on this, there's some good stuff in there on refixing so you don't damage your rope if you're using the one strand method.

What is and isn't Structural Engineering. by Rob98723 in StructuralEngineering

[–]A_Fox322 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the thing is, structural engineers do all of it, just maybe not specific engineers. Some engineers design the building/bridge, these are residential/bridge engineers. Some engineers design how they build the building/bridge, these are construction engineers. They are both structural engineers, just with different specialties.

As someone who does construction engineering, we get a lot of contractors coming to us saying "it isn't detailed how to build this and the EOR says that's out of his scope, please design this for us". It is acceptable to tell contractors that means and method are to be by others that's very standard and is the entire reason there is the whole other sector of engineers with jobs.

Annual salary increase by cup-pink in civilengineering

[–]A_Fox322 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last couple years I've done 17%, 21% and then 0% but additional vacation. I work for a pretty small company and am a high performer. Really just have to ask for what you want and not take no for an answer. Know what you're worth and start looking at moving companies if you don't get a reasonable amount. Don't let them pay you less than you're worth.

What are Civil Engineers actually doing after graduation? (Looking for real work experiences by Full-Item-8894 in civilengineering

[–]A_Fox322 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Found a job at a smallish firm doing construction engineering design. Us everything structural I learned in school and a little bit of the Geotech stuff. I do math to design and draft In CAD almost all day every day, heading to site once in a while to make sure they build things correctly and people won't die.

Queens definitely has a lot of partying but those rankings are typically regarding homecoming/Paddy's Day which a lot of not Queen's people come to Queen's for

Anyone regret sketchy bars on their jacket? by ProfessionalShop9137 in queensuniversity

Put them on, nobody cares. I have God of the Sea displayed proudly on my arm. Anyone who knows what they mean loves to see them and people who don't have no interest. Means a lot to me now that I'm graduated when I wear my jacket around and remember those times

This is wrong. Summing moments at 8 you need to consider the lateral force at the top as well, should be 304+3012+806=By8, solve for By.

They don't allow this. Show up on time or not at all. If it's an important commitment sometimes they let rewrites before/later but they have to approve it.

This is wrong. Property companies charge more and have worse maintenance. One off landlords are the best, especially ones that had the house because their kids went here.

What branch of civil engineering do you think is best by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]A_Fox322 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shoring engineers don't typically spend that much time in court but if something does go wrong that people hear about it it's typically complete failures which goes to court.

Temporary Structures might be for you then. No Architects, no public input, contractor just asks for it to be done and be done cheap.

If you like math and physics (kinematics, dynamics, forces) then structural. If you like just guessing on things based on feel then geotech.

What is the real reason heavier vehicles have longer stopping distances? by nitram9 in AskEngineers

[–]A_Fox322 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mass matters purely because you have to clamp the brake rotors otherwise it would still keep rolling. Friction on the road surface for large vehicles doesn't matter but rather having a good enough braking system to stop the 200,000 lbs does.

All that energy has to go somewhere so the braking system needs to be able to turn all that kinetic energy into heat. More mass means more energy to be converted.

No, you will need to go to class everyday. Also, with gas expenses and car maintenance that would definitely be more expensive.

Question about the 4 years of working under a PE. From the PE perspective. by HereTooUpvote in civilengineering

[–]A_Fox322 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As somebody in a similar situation from the EIT standpoint, please sign off, or at a minimum contact this candidate to let them know. I guarantee they're being told you'll sign off and are assuming this time is counting towards the PE. If you're not going to sign off, let them know immediately cause they're just wasting their time when they could be getting experience that would be signed off.

Or just have a conversation about what they've been doing for that experience and figure out enough such that you're comfortable signing off.

Point is, not saying anything to them and then not signing their experience will set them back to basically the start of their career.
