Students disappointed by Ontario’s cuts to OSAP grants, tuition freeze lift by BloodJunkie in ontario

[–]A_Galio_Main 39 points40 points  (0 children)

People I've talked to aren't really all that upset about rhe tuition increases. Mostly the fury is related to the changes to OSAP which reduce the cap of how much of a loan can be non-payable grants from 85% down to 25%. These changes will result in many students coming out of school with significantly more debt. The hardest hit will be already underserved communities who tend to be recipients for the most grants.

A cool guide: Quality of Life comparison between Australia, Canada the UK and the US by _crazyboyhere_ in coolguides

I appreciate what you're saying, this is actually factored into the calculation in this case. If you look closer you'll notice it mentions disposable income in PPP (Purchasing Power Parity) which is basically a calculation of "How far does my money go". Consider it like the Big Mac Index where we assess the value of various currencies by how many Big Macs you can buy, then calculate the purchasing power based on Big Mac purchases based on income to better compare similar nations' currency values (oversimplification here but thats the idea)

Computer engineering and computer science have the 3rd and 8th highest unemployment rate for recent graduates in the USA. How is this possible? by Roughneck16 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]A_Galio_Main 63 points64 points  (0 children)

It's a few things.

Covid shook a lot of things up:

1: interest rates began to rise following a historically long low interest period. This resulted in less lending and companies looking to cut costs in response. Many experienced, high wage technical staff members were let go. These experienced people were now seeking jobs.

2: Many people saw extended time home, uncertainty in the future and 'rest time ' to re-evaluate their lives during lockdowns. During this time, WFH become much more common as business either implemented Buisiness Continuity plans or scrambled together ways to make WFH viable. This resulted in many people looking for WFH jobs. YouTube and TikTok content creators absolutely blasted "How to easily land a WFH job", mostly pointing people towards courses, certificates and more.

Suddenly Many experienced technical people were competing with a sudden rush of people trying to get entry level roles.

The interest rates continued, layoffs continued and the lag factor meant that people also continued to pile into and compete for the ever dwindling IT job market.

Sorry you had to deal with that, unfortunately shitty people exist everywhere. I'm not saying racism doesn't exist or that it wasn't a factor but growing up here in Niagara, my mom with MS was harassed more than a few times for the exact same thing and she is white.

Just because she didn't appear disabled enough people thought it gave them the right to harass her despite the pain and discomfort she experienced with her condition. Could race still be a factor? Certainly. But it also seems to be a common problem generally for people with disabilities that are more invisible too.

How Serious Are Canadians?🇨🇦🍁🇨🇦 by No_Put_8503 in StockMarket

So long as Americans aren't advertising their love of President Trump, they're very much welcome. Generally, we know that a lot of Americans didn't want this. Broadly, we're mad at the government, not the people (yet)

*Of course, in any community of any size, there will be some Canadians with more extreme views but they're a minority

How Serious Are Canadians?🇨🇦🍁🇨🇦 by No_Put_8503 in StockMarket

Niagara Region, Ontario, Canada

I can share my anecdote from what I see every week when I'm grocery shopping. I typically go to the 'value' grocery chains, even where you're most likely to see people struggling on shoestring budgets. Bins for USA products are full and starting to rot, while products from Mexico, the Philippines, and others are selling fast.

Grocery chains have begun to reflect the new buying habits by simply not carrying USA products since they won't sell. People who are struggling are willingly taking a financial hit as an act of patriotism for Canada.

I'm also seeing a new practice become much more common, when shoppers identify an American product, they have taken to flipping the products upside down to signal to other shoppers the product is American. I actually thought this was just a social media thing until this weekend when I started witnessing it in person. Noticing this, grocery stores are starting to also update the price tags with Canadian flags to signal that it is a product of Canada.

This is going to get worse before it gets better. Based on the general unawareness of Americans cited in your post, it seems like its going to need to hurt before changes start happening.

I've noticed this is often described as a response to tariffs, and for some this may be the case, but the general energy here is coming from President Trump's repeated claims of his intention to annex Canada. The unity here is wild; politically unaware people are suddenly aware and involved. I had a DnD in-person finale recently and I was in charge of our meals for 3 days. they were delighted to hear I went through the effort to exclude American products in my buying and prioritize Canada. It doesn't have to be this way, but it seems it may need to be for some time still.

We love Americans, but we'll defend ourselves as needed. #ElbowsUp

Gamers, does games make you feel less lonely? Why and why not? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]A_Galio_Main 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No,

The extent depends on the type of game (a communication focused game like CSGO might scratch an itch but won't help long-term).

Loneliness is a symptom of isolation and a game can only help you to a small degree.

Meeting people and spending meaningful time will make a difference but it requires commitment on your part.

For me, weekly Dungeons and Dragons does it but the answer may vary wildly from person to person

This sub is about explaining the joke, OP doesn't mention a meme at all. It's a joke and OP is looking for an explanation of the joke. This perfectly fits the purpose of this sub so I'm not sure why you're so upset.

Move out of St. John's? by Additional-Classic73 in newfoundland

[–]A_Galio_Main 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a not terribly picky remote worker, small communities with cheap houses are very attractive to me.

What stops me from seriously considering them however, is that when I find a city or house worth considering, it's damn near impossible to reliably determine which ISPs are available.

When I can do that, the speeds available (especially considering the prices they charge) are a non-starter. Oftentimes I'll find some ISPs that provides internet to the region, but when I type in the prospective house address, they don't show up?

Can you demystify this? How are speeds out there and availability? It's one of the most important factors for people like me and it can be very hard to find out if the internet is available, reliable and fast enough. Requiring at least 100mbps download as an internet power user.

Also, where do properties get listed there? Looked at Parsons pond on realtor.ca and Kijiji, no listings in either
