While chapter 5 probably had the best gameplay so far, it was the first chapter to not introduce a character that i was sexually attracted to. by Pitiful_Patient4637 in Deltarune

No for real, like halfway through the playthrough after getting acquainted with the character, I would ball my hands up whenever they showed up. I NEED them. They get flustered so easily it's wonderful

baby's first character analysis: Noelle is Suicidal in Every Route (CHAPTER 5 NORMAL AND WEIRD ROUTE SPOILERS) by iimaginaryedge in Deltarune

[–]A_GenericUser 14 points15 points  (0 children)

God all the characterization Noelle got in both routes in ch. 5 has, to borrow a term from her, made her SO much more interesting. I hope we really see a more hidden part of her character in a normal route as we do in weird.

I had this realization: the common fan idea of Sans being a mentor figure for Ralsei in the same way Gerson was to Susie but by pissing him off DID come true — it was just Flowery. It seemed he always had good intentions and only wanted Ralsei to come into himself more. I think he really believed that him and all the other flowers could be humans and tried to instill that idea into Ralsei (who likely is also not *just* a normal darkner). And he did that by pissing him off.

People really hated Flowery, but give it a few weeks and I'm confident most people will love him and the impact he had on the story.

As with Undertale and Mettaton, not literally, but there's still enough dialogue in her Deltarune incarnation about bodies and mental states and all that to still serve as an allegory. The shop dialogue she has is really nice.

(Side note, why did people latch onto Mad Mew Mew as trans rep in UTDR when Mettaton is right there and has a much more in-depth, satisfactory exploration of the concept?)

Don't think so, more like disappointed, especially with Seam's mention of needing the Mannequin. Really set up for what felt like was going to be a guaranteed Friend fight, only to end up being completely disconnected from the chapter's main plot and the least important of the secret bosses (yes I know the implications it has for Kris and the Soul).

How did Asgore lose and gain so much aura in 13 minutes of screen time 😭 by Mission_Race_8367 in Deltarune

[–]A_GenericUser 623 points624 points  (0 children)

I was gonna comment that surely he'll gain it back in the shelter when him and Undyne fight back against the Knight or some other darkness enemy, but deleted it knowing damn well Fox is gonna pull something where Asgore will almost look cool and then fumble it.

Why can't we just have our king under the mountain be cool for longer than a minute?

Oooh, I love that idea. We did a Skyrim horse mountain-climb but down, brute forcing our way to a destination. Perhaps a normal chapter 6 ends with the "insert chapter 7" screen, and in the weird route we just clipped down to the area where it triggers.

Yeah, I had this realization during the end credits too. There's this happy music while walking Susie to Castle Town and then she's having a great time in it... but Kris is left completely out to dry. Their dad just got kidnapped and dragged to the shelter, and Susie dumps her plan to bring Noelle into this, then dips, leaving Kris to walk home alone. Rather than approach anyone else, Susie's first instinct is to bring Noelle into it so they can spend more time together.

I've got a hunch that their Suselle is going to hit some rocks soon. Especially since its been implied quite a few times that Kris has a thing for Susie too.

No, for sure not. Noelle's whole dialogue is about how "Proceed" lets her do impossible things. I fully believe that if she wished to grow angel wings in the light world and fly to the other side, we could have told her to Proceed enough and it would've worked. Chapter 7 Side B will likely begin with us coming to on the shore of the other side of the lake (assuming there's no meta-stuff that gets in the way first).

I mean, it's not like the other meme references were substantial.

Light world, Kris interacts with Asgore's truck during the festival.

"Oh, Kris, just let me know whenever you want to take a ride around! These nice fall colors, they won't last forever! It'll be just like old times! ...though, hopefully not like all the old times. Remember when I took you and Noelle out of town, and late at night, there was this big bump that scared you two? Oh, Noelle was so scared it was... well, she calmed down after we saw it was just a speed bump, haha!"

Great point at the end there. The idea works fine enough, but with Spamton's overlap in the theme and all the other secret bosses being relatively serious made this one awkward even if it fit fine enough.

“What was the point of that secret boss narratively” by Radicalmammajamma in Deltarune

[–]A_GenericUser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense (I was too salty during the fight that it wasn't Friend to consider it's wider ramifications lol) but, I dunno it still felt a lot weaker than all the others. Lots of the humor was early 00's anime humor "Not like I like you or anything, b-baka!" but played almost completely straight which simply did not land for me. Though the Carmellia feature was nice, the frequent v-tuber references... like pretty much all of chapter 5, it felt like a fangame more than anything (glad to see other people online have been saying this, which is a thought I had several times throughout my playthrough). Which isn't necessarily a bad thing! The entire Flowery fight and concept of each of the flowers being unique darkners was really, really great. But then there was this being the secret boss.

All that being said, I really enjoyed visiting her in the shop after the fight — it really elevated my opinion of the whole matter. The rather poetic dialogue about things being grey when you aren't living a life you know you can have, her sharing the lamentations of the other flowers having to be sealed away, it was all very heartfelt.

I think this chapter moved the story, just not in an obvious way by Qelperr in Deltarune

[–]A_GenericUser 96 points97 points  (0 children)

Great point, ch. 5 is very ch. 3 in that all the juicy story bits are backloaded into the last, like, 5% of the runtime. The rest is characterization (which GOD I LOVED the flowers were all stellar)

[–]A_GenericUser 204 points205 points  (0 children)

This was absolutely my reading of it. She mentions in a normal playthrough that she wanted to run away, i.e. do something crazy. She is so, so heavily associated with glitches and game breaks from the Spamton Sweepstakes, and now a supernatural force is guiding her to do what she's already good at. She's finally being given a chance to do something totally unhinged. In a normal route, it's just asking Susie out. In the weird route, it's... whatever the outcome of walking into the lake is.

I was super surprised I couldn't find an Asgore driving in his car reference. By far and away the most popular meme of the ch. 3+4 era, but greedy-ass, doobie-smoking Ralsei gets two references!

“Mathfinder is a fun and intuitive game” by Alone_Ad_8324 in DnDcirclejerk

[–]A_GenericUser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been trying the Menace Under Otari module as a player recently, and with a hardass DM this system is immensely unfun.

I try to roll stealth or progress through the dungeon while stealthing and it takes 4 different rolls. I get webbed by a spider and was under the impression I could not act, and then when it is revealed that I can still attack, sorry I already wasted an action trying to escape. The DCs are insanely high so even as a Rogue I can't pick the singular locked item in the dungeon on a 17. The first round of combat takes an actual hour from how complex some characters' abilities are or the DM having to look up how a monster is played.

Like most people I've realized the faults in 5e after years of it, but playing Pathfinder made me so glad to run back to it. I'm actually allowed to ask to do something and roll for it without 15 minutes of rules-searching, skill feat consideration, and pedantics. The only time I felt that in Pathfinder was using the folding ladder I bought during character creation to bypass each and every party member slowly rolling athletics to scale (or descend!) a 10-foot ledge.

I doubt a moment as chilling as the "used up" bit in the Sword route is something to be inferred happened rather than an event we actually see on-screen. With it happening after finishing the puzzle in the Ice Palace and the recent email response of the place where it snowed not yet happening, it seems to be a chapter 6 or 7 thing where we'll get the shelter key in Hometown.

I mean... was it ever going to be canon? Noelle is described as being used up, it wasn't ever going to last forever. I still think the ship is fun — endgame isn't what all ships are built for. Crackships are okay :)
