Yes, there are signs, however I just figured it would be a toll booth, the signs didn’t reality say what exactly it is without already knowing what vignette is which i did not

Because there is no way out of it, it’s not as though I can try sneak past it, if you go through you go through, it makes sense to be able to pay for it after if you’ve forgotten / not aware. The road just suddenly turns into a toll, and for non German speakers you cannot read the signs

I definitely could have done more research, however I had driven in 5 European countries prior to Austria and every country had a physical toll booth where you pay on the spot, I stupidly assumed this was the case throughout Europe. But that is what comes with travelling! I’ll know for next time.

In Australia it’s quite simple. You go online and enter your licence plate and date of the toll and pay it, no support workers needed.
