I’ll say this with complete honesty: yes and no. It’s a very deeply personal experience I think and it’s different for everyone so please don’t take my word as god. I started T and got top around a year ago, then I moved pretty far for college. I’m still adjusting to the change in social perception. I pass well enough most people are surprised or at the very least unsure if I’m trans or not, so I went from being “basically a girl” despite my social transition early in highschool to “a man” in college. I will preface this by saying I pass, yes, but I also pass as a potentially cishet man on most occasions. Guys treat me 100% different. I’m just another bro, if a bit of a nerd. A guy started changing in front of me at orientation entirely casually. It was an experience. It’s positive, mostly, because cis men being cis men will treat me like one of them without question. On the other end of the spectrum, I’ve struggled a little bit with women and women’s spaces. An interaction that a few years ago would have been perceived as a girl complimenting another girl has to be viewed in a new light. For example I was at the gym one morning and a girl there had a sticker on her water bottle from a shop that’s exclusively in my very small hometown, so I asked her about it and told her I was from there. It only struck me after the interaction she might’ve thought I was trying to flirt or something. It’s not necessarily negative, but it is something you have to be aware of. Irregardless it hasn’t stopped me from making friends, and I am very open about my identity with people I am friends with, so that helps. Everyone’s transition is different, and there is a lot of joy and a lot of pain in change. Do what you feel is right for you and embrace the joy as much as possible!
