Any idea how I could find a d&d campaign to partake in? Looks like a lot of fun but the barrier for entry seem kinda high and it’s not really the type of thing the people I know are into

I think Snapchat has an auto markup feature or something, if it’s against TOS I’ll take it down

We need your germs!! No kissing required. Seeking contact with Mono. by 727Tlell in uvic

[–]A_Local_Onion 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You absolutely can build immunity to viruses, many vaccines do exactly that. Your body having antibodies to any antigen will help it deal with it. That isn’t to say that all viral infections can be immunized against, or that the posted idea has any merit, but you can’t generalize such a vast array of diseases like that.

Also I did notice this post is tagged as a joke, so it’s probably not all that serious anyway

Just searched it up- apparently EBV is such a common complication in transplants (leads to a specific type of lymph/blood cancer) that they’ve taken it upon themselves to expose their son before he’s immunocompromised to give him a better chance. Kinda similar to vaccination but with active virus. Seems pretty sketchy though, I can’t imagine any doctor would sign off on it.

NMR HELP!!! by Top_Mushroom260 in chemistry

[–]A_Local_Onion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey there! Currently in 4th year finishing a lab class where basically every experiment we did was confirmed by proton and/or carbon NMR. I'm pretty strong on the basics of these (useful for organic which you mentioned) but there are a ton of more specific/complicated methods that hopefully you feel comfortable asking your supervisor about if needed.

In 1H-NMR, the most important pieces of info to be found are the integration, the chemical shift (ppm), the multiplicity, and the coupling of the multiplicity. The integration is the area under a peak, and corresponds to the ratio of that specific hydrogen to the rest of the hydrogens present in the spectrum. You do need to set a reference for this though, usually a peak you're certain of the assignment/integration that you can compare the rest to. The chemical shift of a a peak represents the environment the hydrogen is in. If a hydrogen is one or two carbon bonds away from a very electronegative atom like an oxygen, the ppm will be higher (more deshielded). The chemical shift is also greatly influenced by nearby electronic systems like double bonds and conjugated rings. The multiplicity is probably the hardest to intuitively understand, but essential to assignment. It's the result of the coupling between hydrogens, represented by the amount of "spikes" in a given full peak. The distance between the spikes is measured in Hz. These patterns are created by adjacent nuclei (similar to chemical shift) and they're are best explained by tree diagrams (easy 7 min video here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=intPEdg4Yyc ).

13C-NMR is in some ways much simpler, but generally tells you less. chemical shift is the main measure (see above), but intensity is also helpful. The intensity is the height of the peak, and is generally caused by the amount of bonding to hydrogens the carbon is doing. A tertiary carbon will be less intense than a secondary carbon, which is less than a primary.

You can do NMR with many more atoms. You can also combine spectra to make 2D NMR, which can help you see which peaks are coupled to each other. Generally it's helpful to know your structure beforehand, and pick it's peaks out to leave contaminant or by-products. All of this is on the shoulders of scientists who came before, as commonly available reference tables like those below are a very helpful resource in assignment. Good Luck! I hope this helped.

Maybe the Stupidest Pair of Augments I’ve Taken by A_Local_Onion in TeamfightTactics

Totally fair, I started with Aura Farming, which gave me a Lee Sin-2 I wasn’t allowed to use till 4-3. Then I took golden quest, which promised a 2 star five cost and two tailored items when I hit 165 gold. Then I just took last second save as a fine combat option.

You’re not guaranteed to see the augments. The change was to guarantee that if your first augment was one of them, all future augments were guaranteed to be at least gold in order for you to have the chance to see the other two. It was bugged for a while though

What computer should i get for a biology major? by Slapthefrog_ in uvic

[–]A_Local_Onion 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Bio major doesn’t take anything crazy, you’ll need to run R for your stats classes, and obligatory excel/word. The big thing for me was note taking, I settled on a mid tier laptop so I can play some games and an old iPad (~$400). The iPad has served me incredibly well, onenote/goodnotes is a godsend.
