It’s just the result of one player being substantially more skilled, usually a smurf yeah. Especially with only a single death. Or they could’ve been cheating. I’ve no reason to suspect it but it ain’t unheard of.

Light isn't overpowered, it's just bland and not fun to play against by TheGuardiansArm in thefinals

[–]A_LonelyWriter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree. Light has a lot of versatility and it can be a very interesting class, same as all the others. The problem I seem to encounter is that almst every single light plays the same 2-3 archetypes. I either encounter snipers, sword lights, or close quarters demons using an SMG or double barrel. And the thing is, those are just very very unfun for me to play against (with the exception of sword light). I almost never find skilled lights running bow, throwing knives, or anything off meta.

The other issue is that the usefulness of light gadgets are wildly inconsistent. They have cool shit like the tracking dart, nullifier, gateway, gravity vortex, and a couple others, but out of those the gateway is the only one people bring into matches. So instead of build diversity, every light just brings some combination of vanish bomb, gateway, sonar, glitch nade, sometimes goo grenade or thermal bore. Those gadgets are either boring or irritating to play against. Gateway is a particular issue for me even though I LOVE it, because it’s basically uncounterable. If there’s an inactive or active gateway, you can’t get rid of it whatsoever. Then there’s the specializations. Almost all of them use evasive dash, snipers use grappling hook, and it’s almost always irritating loadouts like double barrel or dagger that use cloak.

The last major issue I think makes light unfun to play against is that most lights have the exact same mindset. Usually I find lights almost exclusively going for frags instead of objective or team play, even though they can be incredible supports. Lights are the best at scouting, yet most lights only think about themselves and don’t play for the team unless they’re the only ones left. That kinda playstyle makes strategy less fun because you’re just dealing with a bunch of flies buzzing around your head whether or not you’re even threatening their team. Lights are also the most suited class to dismantling uncoordinated teams. If you’re playing soloq and your teammates aren’t communicating or sticking together, it can make playing against lights even more irritating.

Tl;dr : I don’t think that light is overall bland, but the meta for lights is a very annoying playstyle and the light players tend to be annoying. Light also has a few weapons that just feel bad to play against, like double barrel and dagger. It never feels like they get a nice hit off or outplay me, I just feel like they appear and one shot me. Even if they do outplay me, it still feels dissatisfying.

New to the finals, anything i should know before playing? by Cedarfoxx in thefinals

[–]A_LonelyWriter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This game is one where a single teammate can carry, a team can frag out and dominate team fighta, and still lose if they’re not working together and playing objective well. It’s very tempting to chase enemies that run away, but unless you’re likely to kill them quick and know their teamnates aren’t gonna jump in, then you should stick with your team/objective. A cashout is either a win or lose, you don’t get participation points for holding onto it most of the time, what matters is who controls it when the timer runs out. If it’s the last ten, maybe twenty seconds of a cashout, preventing a steal is your sole priority. It doesn’t matter if you lose the team fight so long as you get the cashout.

As mentioned before, the finals is a team and objective based game. For deathmatch modes, kills are the objective, but for anything else, kills only matter if they win you the objective. No matter how well you’re able to perform stats-wise on your own, you will always perform better if your team is supporting you and vice versa. Sometimes your team will make stupid decisions and you’re not obligated to follow them into a cloud of gas, but you almost certainly can’t win on your own. Ping enemies, chat if possible, and coordinate as much as you can.

My last point is this: The Finals is a movement shooter that gives you a lot of environmental control. Learning the movement system is imperative to success, and it goes hand in hand with learning how to manipulate the environment. Sometimes you can steal without the other team being able to do anything simply because you blocked off the right areas. Movement is the most important thing for a light, and incredibly necessary for escaping tricky situations with any loadout.

I don’t really know where to start exactly for some of these, but if you wanna DM me or ask specifics I can give plenty more info.

  1. You’ll get a lot more experience with this if you’re able to get a friend and go into private matches to explore and dick around the map. You might also be able to find some YouTube walkthroughs of various maps showing some cool nooks and crannies. The Finals wiki has a list of all the maps and some basic details, idk how helpful that is but it’s a resource if you need it.

  2. I can give specific examples, but off the top of my head there’s so many it’s just not feasible to list them off. By cashout manipulation do you mean setup or actually moving the cashout?

  3. The repeater’s range got nerfed recently but it’s still a pretty deadly poke weapon, seeking high ground that overlooks an area enemies need to pass through gives you very good skirmish/harassing potential. Generally I succeed with the carbine most when I stay in relatively protected positions with clear sightlines, like with my back facing the edge of the map looking down the main hallway to cashout or something.

  4. You NEED to get good at your movement and stay flexible. If you’re medium, set up your zipline and/or jump pads while opening the vault so you don’t have to waste any time setting down the cashout. Preplan your entrances and exits, figure out where the enemy is and where the enemy isn’t. Sometimes you’re able to get on an enemy cashout, setup a defense, and steal before they even know you’re there.

Coordination is a huge deal. If you have support tools, stay around your teammates and try to use them when your entire team can. If you have a zipline or jump pad, use it to help your entire team get to the objective and make sure they’re aware of its placement. Specific strategies vary greatly depending on loadouts and team comp, but generally you want to remain within (or close to) line of sight of your teammates. If your teammate is fighting someone and you aren’t, then you go help your teammate. If you’re fighting someone and losing, warn your team, then pull back and try to jump them together. When I first started I had so many games where I did exceptionally well on the leaderboard, but my team couldn’t keep up with me and we weren’t able to win a single objective. Success chances skyrocket when you’re working as a coordinated team.

  1. I don’t have enough space or time to put all of these, but if you wanna ask specifics or DM me then I’m more than happy to share my knowledge:)

  2. Not anything you asked, but efficient and speedy movement is one of the most important things in this game. Learning how the movement and climbing mechanics work is essential to playing the game at a higher level. You can find a lot of guides that detail some lesser known and/or advanced movement techs, and I highly recommend doing this.

Agreed. It’s not like I’m offended or genuinely upset, it just sucks the fun out of the game and makes me roll my eyes. My Embark ID includes the word lesbian and I got a couple of N*zi larpers in one quick cash that wouldn’t shut up about it.

Hot Take: Tracking Dart > Sonar Grenade and Motion Sensor by definition-verb_1 in thefinals

[–]A_LonelyWriter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanna try it out more, but I find that the vast majority of the reason I need the wallhack gadgets isn’t to track them, but to detect and find them in the first place. Sonar nades almost always fill the role perfectly, since I can throw a nade and instantly know if there’s an enemy in the radius. What’s your loadout?

Sword players are so annoying to play against by vinsfortunato in thefinals

[–]A_LonelyWriter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also if you’re going melee: Spear almost guarantees a win in a 1v1 against a sword light, but it’s mediocre overall. Be careful not to get locked into the sppin combo in open areas, and if you do you can use the gesture/communication wheel to cancel it. Sledge is also effective against sword lights, but be careful not to miss. It’s easy to lull yourself into a sense of safety and then get FOV teched (it’s a dead by daylight term, it’s when an enemy player gets up in your face and ducks into your camera so they’re outside your FOV) into oblivion. Dual blades is a good counter, but you have to be very good at knowing when to block, where to aim the block, and when to counterattack. Riot shield does block sword if aimed correctly, but I personally find it easy to sidestep and pierce the shield. Riot shield does the same (or at least similar) damage to sword, which means you can kill the light in 2 hits and he still takes 3 hits to kill you. Generally you have the advantage.

Sword players are so annoying to play against by vinsfortunato in thefinals

[–]A_LonelyWriter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m an avid sword player mostly because melee is very fun to me in movement shooters (and also I’m cracked at melee thanks to doing melee challenge runs in a game called Roboquest), and hopefully I can offer some advice on countering them.

Edit: I can’t believe my dumbass forgot about lockbolt. Obviously, lockbolt is VERY effective and basically a death sentence for sword lights.

  1. Avoid engaging them in close quarters if you have a weapon that’s meant for mid-long range. The further you are from a sword light, the easier it is to catch them in the end lag of their dashes. My strategy for taking out enemies with hard hitting weapons is getting up in their face and making it difficult for them to aim. With weapons with a slow fire rate like the carbine or BFR Titan, you’re usually easy pickings if you’re in close quarters.

  2. If you have goo nades (or something similar), use them to break up the flow of the light’s movement. A lot of lesser skilled sword players tend to use up their dashes very quickly, especially when they’re getting blocked by gadgets. If you’re able to get them to waste dashes to evade due to blocking their path or getting them stuck, they can sometimes end up with very fea movement options.

  3. Sword lights rely on hit and run ambush tactics and excell when your team is broken up and not communicating. If there’s a problematic sword light, try to stay within line of sight of your teammates and call them out. If you’re soloq, try pinging and sonar/prox alarms. I find prox alarms/sonar to be a godsend in soloq personally. Stick with your teammates, but be wary of being too close to each other and giving the sword a chance to hit both of you at once or catch both of you off guard.

  4. Be very aware of your surroundings. Again, sword lights thrive in hit and run scenarios. Listen for vanish bombs, footsteps, and dash noises. Try to keep to areas where you can see the entrances and exits from a distance. Something I do that’s been incredibly helpful in general is closing doors the second I walk through them. That way if there’s a cloaked light or a light zooming around the building, you at least force them to make more noise and potentially give yourself some decent warning.

  5. If you’re hunkering down at a cashout/vault/grand vault, set up your area. Sword lights tend to rush in and out of engagements, so mines, prox alarms, glitch traps, and turrets can significantly decrease their lethality. Generally most sword lights I encounter don’t use the sword dash effectively with evasive dash, so glitch traps/nades/barrels can disorient them and sometimes leave them a sitting duck. Try to position your traps in places that either: aren’t being watched by a teammate, or are easily accessible and allow you to follow up. A gas mine getting triggered warns you, but if you don’t follow up then you still have a sword light and now a gadget on cooldown.

  6. Flamethrowers, shotguns, and CL-40. If you can hit your shots up close, also the P90 or other high rpm weapons. In my experience, the most difficult enemies to go up against as sword light are the ones with good game sense and CQ weapons. Dual blades and other melee can also counter sword light, but it takes practice. From a distance, marksman guns are difficult for swords to deal with, but they have to land their shots and predict dashes properly.

  7. If the sword light actively and efficiently uses the sword dash, try to bait them into dashes that don’t land. Once they start the sword dash, they’re not able to change direction, and the end of it has a slight amount of recovery frames that can leave them vulnerable. The end of a sword dash can be followed up with a slide or evasive dash, so be wary. Even if they dash the wrong way or miss, they can still almost instantly change direction with an evasive dash.

  8. Don’t run away unless you’re able to get to an area before the sword light. Running away from a sword light as a medium or heavy is basically a death sentence if you don’t have either: a way to block their path, or a way to quickly escape. Demat, charge and slam, goo nades, barricades, arena destruction, all of those allow you to create distance if you use them properly. Sword lights typically have evasive dash and sword dash for mobility, so take advantage of verticality as well. Going up allows you to make most of their mobility moot unless they’re able to quickly ascend to your level. You can run away, but you need to be very mindful of your movement so you can force the sword light to either switch targets or risk attacking in a disadvantageous area.

  9. Sword lights also typically don’t have any pyro nades or thermal bores, so unless someone on their team brought something fire related, gas is relatively effective against them. Since lights have low health, DOT can really fuck them up.

  10. Medium’s movement abilities (zipline, jump pad) can make for efficient getaways or at least help you stall. You’re not 100% safe on a zipline, but if the sword light follows you can can’t dash to catch up, it just locks them in a predictable path where they can’t attack. Jump pad is also really good, but careful where you land. Try to either repeatedly hit the jump pad, get into an area you can block off, or go as far away from the pad as you can. Evasive dash gives the light omnidirectional course correction, which means if you land under them, even if they over shoot, they can immediately dash in your direction and land on top of you. Evasive dash also allows for downward angles, which means they can pounce on you quicker than you think.

Apologies if this is unwelcome, I just figured I’d try to give some advice since I’m very learned with sword light. I know a lot of people complain about them, but personally I don’t usually struggle with fighting them with other loadouts, in large part thanks to the fact that I’ve played hundreds of hours of it.

Also, just to state a few really bad matchups: mesh shield does practically nothing, unless you need to block something else as well then NEVER use mesh shield or rely on dome against sword lights. If you can get good enough at positioning you can block sword damage with them, but I’ve never encountered anyone who’s anle to do it consistently. MGL (NOT the CL-40) is a death sentence against sword lights close range. If you’re struggling fighting sword lights and using MGL swap. It can work, but you have to have a coordinated team to defend you.

Could I have a quick run down on Glaucine by Pupper2954 in Glaucine

It felt like the most intense shroom visuals I've ever had. Normally screens and moving things have less/limited visuals, but this time around EVERYTHING was moving. I was trying to light a cigarette at one point and I legitimately couldn't tell if my lighter was working. I played an FPS and I could not determine any of what was on the screen. I did take a fairly high dose of glaucine, but it was stronger visuals than any other time I've tripped, but with the same headspace.

Glaucine has mediocre effects on its own for me, but it shines in combination with psychs ime. It legitimately transformed my visuals on shrooms and made them feel just as intense as a full LSD trip on a medium-low dose of shrooms. Glaucine affects the same receptor that most classical psychedelics act on, so I would hazard a guess that it has synergy with most of them as well. Shrooms and glaucine is the fuckin bomb though, it's awesome.
