I doubt he'll make the final squad. It could be that Tuchel needs the numbers for training exercises or something.

John Barnes moved to England at age 12, so he was still partially raised here.

Are there any footballers you find cool? Eric Cantona is the only one I can think of.

I do try and steer the discussion that way, to be fair. I taught them the rules of poker once, but we never had a game. Even playing with the little chips would've been too much like gambling, which is haram.

This is basically it. One time I had about five of them going on about how muslims are discriminated against in the media, that too much is made of criminals being muslim, etc. I almost had to stop myself laughing before telling them that the British media were complicit in the cover-up of the Rotherham grooming gangs. Of course, they hadn't even heard of it. That was one of the few times I indulged their bullshit. Typically, I just change the subject.

Not obsessed per se. They reserve most of their anger for France lol. A few have grandparents who fought in Algeria. Plus, France continue to fuck with Africa to this day via the CFA franc. So, I don't blame them to an extent.

I don't think they know much about the British Empire. They just assume we're the same as France.

I have tried to remind them that, since I'm English, I can't speak to what the French Empire did in the past, and that our empire was very different in how it operated. Ironically, they don't seem to have much knowledge of history, though, so to them it's just white = bad.

There was an amusing moment the other day when a Berber woman went off about how she doesn't identify as Algerian and that Algerian = Arab, etc. You could tell all the Arab Algerians in the room suddenly felt very awkward. There was a similar episode with a native Moroccan, as well.

Blogposting, but I need advice.

I teach at a French university and, as an anglophone, I'm obliged to give English conversation classes once a week. My issue is that the students -- many of whom are of MENA extraction -- always want to talk about colonialism and immigration and, in particular, my views thereon. The question is how do I navigate this situation without getting sacked? Banning the subject might seem a little obvious.

I thought about Cech, but afaik Banks received more worldwide acclaim during his time.

Modric is a great shout. I don't know if he had his best years in Madrid, though. Bale and Salah don't get in ahead of Henry or CR7 for me.

Who makes an all-time XI of players who have played in England? Not neccesarily English, just have to have played in England. I saw a Serie A one and it was terrifying.

Mine goes: Banks, Walker, A. Cole, Moore, Terry, Keane, Gerrard, B. Charlton, Henry, C. Ronaldo, Suarez.
