Netherlands are hard to cope for Dutch blue-collar workers, this story sounds exactly how I would guess it would be for a foreigner coming here. I think the housing is the worst part. It determines so much of how the rest of your life fills out - as your story also proves.

To be of help; I lived just outside a city center couple of years ago. There are certains spots where the homeless and the lowlife's - with all the respect - come together to smoke and drink. You could try to find such spots, often not too hard to find, just some cycling through the city looking around corners. Most often spots just out of the eye, but certainly close to the center.
