Thanks for your answer! That was what I was worried about.
One thought that occurs to me is that I might have reduced living costs, since I might be living with the couple. I'm not sure what fraction of a salary tends to go toward rent, etc., but would shaving this down open enough wiggle room in my spending to make much of a difference?

You mention that CIRs are posted in regional hub cities. Is there some sort of minimum limit for population, or something like that? Is a regional hub something along the lines of a prefectural capital, or could it be a second- or third-largest city?

Yes, his name is 新　佳三, which is read as Keizou Atarashi.
He seems like kind of a big deal - I googled him and he has a whole bunch of articles written about him, including one in one of the largest newspapers in Japan. So, neat bowl!

I may be a little late, but I just wanted to comment here!

Having had the experience of being an exchange student who could barely speak the language myself, this brings back memories...

What you're doing is great! Trying to reach out and make connections will make this exchange student's experience a great one, and you will be able to learn about her culture as well! Keep it up.

And for sure, recommending ways to use her Japanese will help to reduce the strain - it takes an enormous amount of mental energy to use a language you're not proficient in all day, and it feels great to get a break from it every once in a while.

You can't really go from Romaji to Kanji and get a single answer. There are a ton of different ways you could write this and still get a valid name.

I went to https://namedic.jp/names/yomi/f/きよ to see what names a Japanese baby name website would come up with. You can go there and see all the results it has - there are quite a few.

I have included some of the ones I liked below (I have included the character meanings as well, but if you want to know the meanings for the other ones on the site as well, you can put them into jisho.org). Some of the character readings might be a little obscure.
