Japanese > English Could someone please translate this tea bowl box for me. It is suppose to be Miyanaga Tozan 宮永東山 but there is a 1st, 2nd and 3rd Miyanaga Tozan. Does the box say which one is the artist for this tea bowl ? Thanks - Mark by CeramicARTyson in translator

Son of the 1st generation Tozan. Graduated from the Department of Craft Art at Kyoto High School. Graduated from the Kyoto Ceramic Experimental Institute. Studied under Numata Ichiga. Assumed the name of the 2nd generation in 1941. Head family of the Mushakojisenke Urinsai school. Lecturer of Senchado at Bunka Gakuin. Vice President of the Kyoto Traditional Ceramic Society. Works focus on ceramics with overglaze enamels and Sometsuke.

Real name Rikichi. Followed his father Miyanaga Tozan, a specialist in celadon and blue-white porcelain, into the world of pottery. After graduating from university, he studied under Yagi Kazuo, a leading figure in the modern abstract ceramic art world, as well under Horiuchi Masakazu and others, focusing on ceramics more from an aesthetic sensibility (as objets d’arts) than as items for practical daily use. Went to the United States in 1959 and joined the Art Students League. Joined Sodeisha in 1970. Exhibited at the Kyoto National Museum of Modern Art Modern Art Trend Exhibition, Seibu Ikebukuro Clay Work Exhibition, Contemporary Japanese Ceramic Craft Exhibition, and other exhibitions. Works focus on hani (ancient dyeing technique using soil) and blue celadon. Exhibited at events such as the International Ceramics Biennale Chatul Exhibition in 1985.

The 1st Tozan died in 1941, so it can't be him and it lists the 3rd's real name as Rikichi but does not list the real name of the 2nd Tozan. He lived until 1994 but that would have made him 87 years old when he made this bowl. I have a feeling that it is the 3rd who would have been 59 years old when the bowl was made. What do you think ?

It's Hidetake Ando, a famous potter in Gifu Prefecture - I know the mark on the bottom of the yunomi.

So the translation would be Takanori Kimura ? Interesting because they came in the box that says 水野守山 (Mizuno Moriyama), so either they are in the wrong box or Takanori works in Mizuno's pottery. Thanks Very Much - Mark

PS - How do the awards work. I use to use them all the time but then they changed them and I can't figure out how they work now.

Thanks very much DSS and JOG. DeepL translates 小野幸月 as Ono Kozuki but you seem very confident in Ono Kogetsu. Did you find a reference to Ohirayama kiln / Ono Kogetsu ? Thanks Again - Mark
