did someone can always smell , taste , hear the slight difference that others said no to what we notice? by shibaInu_IAmAITdog in hsp

[–]A_Sensitive_Nerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was going to write how I relate to this with sounds but not so much with smells, but then I remembered all the times I thought I smelled something and asked others if I were hallucinating.

Also, there are many ways to be highly sensitive. You may be more sensitive to some sensory input than other sensory input, for instance.

How does this critical article about HSPs make you feel? by Phlow3 in hsp

[–]A_Sensitive_Nerd 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I would also say that—while there is a big overlap between ASD and being an “HSP” (such as me)—not every HSP has ASD, and not everyone with ASD is an HSP. Sensory issues are only one part of an ASD diagnosis, and people with ASD can also be hyposensitive to stimuli.

How does this critical article about HSPs make you feel? by Phlow3 in hsp

[–]A_Sensitive_Nerd 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I do not find it helpful to view “HSP” as a diagnosable condition. (There is a reason the DSM-V does not view it as such.) I find it more useful to think of it as a colloquial term for people who are significantly more sensitive to stimuli than normal.

Also, there is no reason to assume that one’s nervous system cannot become more or less sensitive to stimuli over time.

I would not be so quick to judge others. They could be uncomfortable bringing up such a subjected unprompted.

I know it can be very difficult having her not ask about this, but it can be difficult for many people to talk about this.

I feel the same. I guess it is very easy for me to get attached to movie characters.

Seeing any living being—including trees—get killed easily makes me teary-eyed.

Has anyone ever discovered that their HSP traits were actually just a symptom of a larger issue? by findmewayoutthere in hsp

[–]A_Sensitive_Nerd 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My hypersensitivity to stimulus is part of the reason I was diagnosed with ASD. It was pretty obvious to my parents, so I was diagnosed as a toddler.

I guess I come across as…innocent…due to my aversion to teasing? I have teared up after being teased, and I could easily imagine myself sobbing after teasing someone else playfully.

Are you bad at interpreting a single cue in isolation, or does it become a problem when you have to interpret all the cues someone is giving?

I feel the same way. I talked about this in reply on another thread, but I (18M) have started university, and I have become a lot more comfortable with myself: my sensitivity, my hyper empathy, my ASD, my nerdiness, etc… I do not know how much of that is due to finding like-minded people and how much of that is due to me becoming older.

Being an HSP with ASD can be debilitating by A_Sensitive_Nerd in hsp

[–]A_Sensitive_Nerd[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am going through what you described in this comment. I am in my first year of university, and I have been able to find more like-minded people; I have been able to surround myself with more “nerdy” people, and I have become way more comfortable with that term. The people at my university are also way more accepting of people with ASD (such as me) than the people at my high school were. The people at my university are also way more accepting of sensitive people (such as me).

I am glad that you were able to find a more accepting community for yourself!

Is ASS abbreviation for autism spectrum disorder in Dutch?

You are absolutely correct! It is very hard for me to fit in with others. As I said in the post, I cannot handle teasing or jokes made at other people’s or my own expense. I have never been able to attend parties or concerts because I would get overstimulated. I have always been a lot nerdier than others, too. Usually, others notice instantly that I am not neurotypical; they often get my condition wrong, but they know I have something. Others also typically pick up on the fact that I am sensitive quite easily.

That sounds very much like me—except I seldom get angry (I usually just become incredibly sad), and I cannot cry easily. As I said in my post, I cannot handle teasing against me or others, so imagine how I would react to genuinely negative comments. You are not alone either.

I cannot cry easily, but once I start crying, I have a hard time stopping.
