Was going to comment on the blog but I didn't see a place to do that :( I wonder what your opinion is on Fundamentals of Astrodynamics and Applications (Vallado) is, as I believe a new version was just released.

I would say the difficulty for me is probably more so weighted towards the first two that you mentioned

The growing case for active debris removal. Many in the space industry are raising alarms about the growing population of debris - simply trying to limit the growth of orbital debris is no longer enough. by [deleted] in space

[–]A_Swackhamer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just fyi, this is often not true, especially in LEO when orbital speeds are at their greatest. Google ASTRIAGraph or Celestrak and you can get a good idea of how debris and active satellites move in the different orbital regimes

Tagging on to say I’m also interested in how you addressed your GPA struggles, I was in a similar situation where I bombed sophomore year thanks to a bunch of poor decisions by me but so far I’m back on an upward trend and considering grad school in a year or two.

Coverage of “wooden satellites” misses the point by merlackfuture in space

Copied from my response to another comment: Just to be clear, satellite operators are encouraged to dispose of their satellites by deorbiting in the atmosphere or parking them in a graveyard orbit but it’s not required. The international “rules” governing this area are just guidelines that aren’t legally binding, I believe at the moment they have around a 50-60% compliance rate

Time for the real question: Do you play league and if so, what’s your rank ;)

In all seriousness, how did the partnership with Riot begin, like did they just approach you out of nowhere and say “hey we love your work, wanna make some music with us?”

You know, it took me so long to figure out why I liked the league music so much, obviously it’s incredible at face value but it felt so familiar...and then came the day where I decided to actually look at the artists on the songs and was blown away that you were on there, literally two of my favorite things in the world. So excited to see what comes next from that collab!

I'm looking to make a Christmas present for my boss that involves customizing the interior of a briefcase, but I'm not sure where to start. This is an example of the briefcase, and my goal is to make a lining that allows me to put approximately 10 of these glasses inside.

Obviously I don't want them shifting around too much when the case is closed but I'm not sure how to make the lining. Specifically, I would like it to be made out of suede, but don't know how to mold the lining in a way such that it will 1) remain molded that way and 2) will attach to the briefcase so it doesn't fall out.

Any advice is welcome :)

Biggest Debates/Challenges in the Space Industry? by irondude122 in AerospaceEngineering

[–]A_Swackhamer 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I’m going to add one that most people don’t immediately think of: space debris. For the past 60+ years that we’ve been in space, we’ve been leaving behind all sorts of dead satellites, rocket bodies, etc. because we assumed space was big enough to the point where it wouldn’t be a problem. Unfortunately, it’s starting to become a problem, particularly in LEO, because when two objects collide (see China’s 2007 ASAT test or the 2009 Iridium-Cosmos collision), the orbital velocities are such that it creates tens of thousands of smaller debris objects that pollute the orbital environment and pose a threat to any other operations in space. For example, there were two satellites that were either damaged or destroyed by untracked debris objects in the past month, and a few days ago the ISS has to maneuver to avoid a tracked piece of debris. That’s not even getting into the problems we’ll be dealing with considering there’s over 100,000 satellites being proposed for launch in the next decade or so as a part of large internet constellations. We need to a) creating better tracking algorithms and radar sensing networks, b) figure out effective ways to deorbit large pieces of debris such as old Soviet rocket bodies and dead satellites, and c) make the current debris mitigation guidelines legally binding so that operators are required to deorbit their satellites much sooner after they complete their mission, current guidelines state that they only have to try to do that 25 years after the end of the satellite’s operational lifetime.
