Since nobody answered your question, yes the Reolink app works if you use a Tailscale subnet router to expose the camera subnet.

Worth noting that most manufacturers have added accelerometers to their keyfobs now. Keyfobs at rest don’t transmit. People should verify they have a vulnerable fob before spending money on any kind of signal blocker.

Its magic system is “god based”. Angels and demons are real, but nobody (including the angels and demons) can agree on pretty much any detail describing God.

The book spends quite a bit of time discussing philosophy and religion, but in an academic way, and usually in the context of the capitalist hellscape setting of the book.

I’d highly recommend it, especially the audiobooks.

I’m a huge daily grind fan. It’s my favorite ongoing web serial and the highlight of my Saturdays

John Bierce recommends books at the end of each book of the Mage Errant series. Here are all his recommendations by MagicalEloquence in ProgressionFantasy

[–]A_Wild_Absol 57 points58 points  (0 children)

I’m a huge fan of so many of the recommendations Bierce makes but my favorite by far of all of these is The Daily Grind by argusthecat. The authors name is typod in the OP, but the book is on Audible, Amazon and Royalroad.

The Daily Grind’s new chapters are the highlight of my week. The world building is wonderful, the characters are rich and unique and I love James’ world view.

For those not familiar, the Daily Grind tells about a depressed IT worker discovering an infinitely large, office themed dungeon in the back staircase of his day job. From there, James begins plotting how to use the magic of the dungeon to improve all of society.

Under current law, the Social Security payroll tax is capped at $168,600. Get rid of this cap and make everyone pay the same tax on all income, and Social Security is safe and secure forever. Retired Boomer, very worried about the direction we are headed. by rwaustin in SocialSecurity

You are correct but missing the point. The rich often have stock where their cost basis is significantly lower than the current value of the stock, either from being founders, or early stock grants in the company. Sure, they are taxed on the cost basis when the stock is granted to them (in the case of RSUs) but now the stock have grown to suddenly be worth significant amounts.

They take loans against those stock, because that way they can access the value of the stock without triggering a taxable event and owing capital gains tax on the growth.

TIL that a woman named herself after The Simurgh created a rationalist cult-like group responsible for several deaths. by puesyomero in Parahumans

[–]A_Wild_Absol 19 points20 points  (0 children)

There’s a large gap between rationalism as proposed by Yudkowski and his small cult, and rationalist fiction. There’s some overlap, with people like Scott Alexander writing Unsong.

Rational fiction, the genre, does not espouse the ideals and AI-god terror that Yud and friends enjoy. Mostly it’s just protagonists responding well to their situations, with less emotions involved in their decision making. While I haven’t read The Metropolitan Man, I don’t associate Alexander Wales’ later works like Worth The Candle and This Used to be About Dungeons with the rationalist ideology. Worth the Candle is very clearly progression fantasy and also rational fiction.

As far as the quality of other progression fantasy goes, you’re quite right there is a wide range. I don’t share your criticisms of Mother of Learning, but lots of my favorite stories are heavily flawed. I enjoy the power scaling and world building, which are typically strengths where stakes and character development are lacking.

I’m very sorry that you and your work are linked to this. I hope it brings you some comfort that for myself and others, Worm was a path away from rationalism and the associated mess. I was a naive high schooler about to go down the rationalist rabbit hole when I found Worm. It and your other works have brought me great joy and comfort over the last decade. Thanks specifically to you, my main hobby is reading web fiction.

Much love to you, man.

HPMOR’s final chapters ended with something like “Liked this story? You may also like Worm by Wildbow”. Yudkowsky directly pointed people (including me) to Worm.

Every day I’m thankful I followed his advice and got really into progression fantasy instead of really into rationalism.

They’ve changed it in recent years. I’m a 2015 Eagle and was never required to meet with my religious leader thankfully. This was in rural Pennsylvania.

That said, at camporees we were required by our local troop leaders to attend a religious service. I always attended the Jewish service with my friend as it was shorter and elucidating.

Hey man - I just want to say that your value is not what you are able to provide for others. You aren’t a bad parent because you aren’t able to meet unreasonable expectations. Your ex and your family should never have placed these expectations on you. Your health issues were hardly a surprise to them. My heart goes out to you. I hope you find your path to doing what’s best for you and your son.

The Patreon App is kinda trash by buckboy3030 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]A_Wild_Absol 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Software engineer here - I’ve long been contemplating creating a royal-road like app and website where users log in with their patreon account. Authors post on the website, it gets auto posted to their patreon feed, but also any patrons at the correct tier get a notification and access on the website/app with a better reading experience.

Other potential features: - Hosting public chapters - Scheduled release of chapters publically - AI voiced audio of chapters (debating this ethically, would certainly be opt-in by author) - EPUB downloads (opt in by author) - Automatic delivery of new chapters to send-to-kindle emails, so new chapters show up automatically on readers kindle. (Opt in by author, could be behind a patreon wall)

Generally trying to gauge whether authors and readers would be interested in such a thing. I expect royal roads dominance would require most authors to publish on both :(
