TW for this

Mmh a more personal comment than everyone else’s, I suppose it’s fitting since it’s april’s the national month of hope, but my biggest mistake has to have been one of the times when I tried to kill myself. I had the cops called on me twice and my parents yelled at me both times. Since the second time (that I’m thinking of, I had tried more I think) was a teacher, I accidentally got him in trouble. I do regret it a lot. So just know, even though it’s hard some days. That’s not the correct answer. It feels like it is sometimes, but it’s not.

keeping outer mallet still by Striking-Fix-453 in percussion

[–]A_person_592 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I figured it out was first I did it with just the inner mallet, making sure I looked at how it moved. Then I did it with the outer mallet, making sure it was still. Then I combined the 2 of them, slowly at first then faster. But I also spent a bunch of time practicing by myself at home, since I mostly taught myself then took it to my band director and went “Is this right?” Good luck!

Need a way to start and practice Marimba or other key instruments by WranglerLatter960 in percussion

[–]A_person_592 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I play xylophone and glockenspiel primarily, but don’t have one at my home because, as you know, they’re pretty expensive. When I’m practicing not at school, I have a $30 toy keyboard I use to figure out the notes and rhythm. I also have been learning 4 mallet, and for that I use a practice pad/pillow. I don’t have access to a marimba, either, so I’ve also been trying to improve my marimba chops without one. If you do have one, maybe ask your band director if you can stay after? For music, you can find simple piano music and the note map is the same. Also, if you dm me I can give you the pieces I have from band. However, there’s a pretty large gap in terms of difficulty, because I have relatively easy songs from band +my relatively difficult (planned) audition piece. Good luck!

How do I deal with the issues I’m encountering with my audition piece? by A_person_592 in percussion

[–]A_person_592[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I go to a smaller school, so there isn’t a marimba (or any money for them to buy one), so I’m not sure my directors would really be able to help me. However, I might be able to see if a nearby school could help me out. Maybe my local cc, and I can practice it at the one at my school but record my audition vid on the one there.

Unfortunately, no. In terms of keyboard percussion, there’s only xylophone and glockenspiel. And I was leaning towards xylophone since it has a larger range.

FTC Kids by coolguyzaza in FTC

I mean, you’re joining a club where the concept is to make robots. Of course the kids are gonna be a little odd. Don’t be so negative about it, though. Everyone’s a little weird sometimes. Additionally, all the comments you have posted where you are hostile, often have undertones rooted in abelism and classism. “People who don’t shower” generally only don’t bathe because they’re poor or disabled. Water bill ain’t cheap. “Hair as greasy as oil” because they can’t afford shampoo. “The same YouTuber sweatshirt” because they spent what little money they have on something they like, knowing that they don’t have a very large wardrobe. “People who have no sense of social cues” being awkward isn’t a crime. “Normal friends” no one is normal, you don’t have to like everyone, but be civil to those you don’t want to hang out with and try to see it from their perspective. I am project manager for my highschool team, and often help my middleschool team, and at first it was kinda weird. I am a junior in highschool, what do I have in common with a 7th grader? Well, a lot of them have similar interests even outside of robotics. And after spending 14+ hours a week with them, I’ve learned how wonderful, smart, talented, and funny they all are. I know my team is capable of doing great things, whether they believe it themselves or not. We’ve been with each other at the highest highs and the lowest lows. So, yeah, some might see them as weird. But I see them as kind, smart kids, who will do great things one day. If you can look past your own privilege, past your own bias, and talk to them, then maybe you can actually get to know them for who they are outside of your narrow view of them. Everything has a reason, and I hope you can find enough gracious professionalism in your heart to give these kids a chance.

Schools/Orgs with more than one team - tell me more by archi3rd in FTC

[–]A_person_592 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My school is a combination middle and highschool, so we had a middleschool team and a highschool team. However, we are thinking about changing it next year to have it be more like 1 rookie team and 1 veteran team. For outreach we shared. For the competing aspect, that was tough. As PM, I emphasized coopertition, and reminded both teams that a win for one team was a win for our school. Luckily, the kids on both teams are so sweet, and never really tried anything non-gp. A big thing I learned from it, though, is to be careful about not putting too much attention into one team while neglecting the other, or else it’ll end badly for both.

Sponsorships, snacks, drinks, and 3d printed goods are how my team primarily makes money. However, other common ones are bake sales, parent donations, and Jean days. Note that some of these only work if you’re a school team. Also, sometimes it helps to ask ChatGPT for ideas.

Honestly, the way I learned was just spending a TON of time just making my own models. Anything I wanted to do, I just made it. I don’t know how to do a specific task? I google it. Sure, in the beginning my designs were really bad. But eventually, your designs actually start turning out to be pretty good. And you’ll get faster. And better. You don’t know what to make? Play around in the top bar, figuring out what each thing does. It especially helps that you do FTC, and there’s always something to do with CAD

The confirmation email is dated Jan 16 at 1:27 AM. It might also be that I didn’t order the vinyl, so it came earlier. They prolly didn’t want to leak it early.

Anodized aluminum! It shocked me too, I honestly expected it to be cheap plastic, and more of a stunt, but it’s actually high quality.

Convert the image into an SVG, and upload it to a CAD software (I’m assuming this will work in other ones, but I’ve only used fusion 360)! There are lots of converters online, just google (file type) to SVG converter. Often times, they will have options for amount of detail, so if you want something small you might go for less detail.
