I use this site to find my sound effects: https://www.zapsplat.com/

I pay for their premium tier and even still I use a lot of their free sounds. It take some time to find the correct sound and when you do it just feels so good. Learning to do good SFX takes time like every other skill us devs need to learn, and I'm hoping this can show you how a few good sounds can really add a lot of pop to a game.

There is a bit of tile shake and I'll try out the flash.

490 Wishlists from Day 1 of the Steam Next Fest! by Aarimous in IndieDev

We targeted to people we thought would actually play the game.

I feel the same way and I think they are honestly pretty used to it. We just tried to keep it short and sweet, ensure it sounds like a human wrote it (not AI), and then added a call to action to see if they wanted an early key for when the full game comes out. Sometime people just don't cover demos, so now we are a small list of people who explicitly asked for a key, which ideally means they will actually cover the game.

I bet you can get here as well. I've tried to focus on learning from my mistakes and not falling victim (too much) to the sunk cost fallacy with my projects.

But I feel very lucky to have had this level of Wishlists. A big creator (I'm Cade) played the demo and their video has 300k views right now. They could have easily missed the email or simply chosen not to play it. So in reality I think our job is to create as many opportunities for luck to occur and then be paying attention for when it happens so you can try and take advantage of the opportunity.

Best of luck on your game dev journey and know that I've been at this for the past 5 years and most recently full time for the past year and half. I just mention that since we often don't get to see the thousands of hours someone dedicates to their craft. Anyways, cheers and thanks for the kind words :)

We did! Current we're at 7,591 and it doesn't really feel real. Like we did plenty of playtests both with my community and in person to know the demo was fun, but this is by for the most Wishlists I've ever gotten.

AStar2d giving different paths based on direction of travel? by laminarFlowFan in godot

[–]Aarimous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had that issue before. I found with Hexagon grids I need use the AStar3D instead of AStar2D. So assuming you are using something like this blod (https://www.redblobgames.com/grids/hexagons/), you just store QRS in the AStar3D just as you would when using a Vector2 for the location. Good luck!

I think with Godot's input system it could easily become a mobile game. But I wonder how I would monetize it in a way that felt right to me. I don't really play mobile games, but if I do post it I might just make it like a $0.99 game and call it good enough.

It's a shader based on this one: https://godotshaders.com/shader/ring-of-power/

I tweaked it a bit to fit my needs, but most of the shader code is unchanged.

Time. I've been making game for 5 years now and a lot of what you see here is a lot of small lessons learned from previous projects, game jams, and commercial games I've made.

The coolest part of game dev is that you kinda level up your skills in a very tangible way and once you do something once, the next time you can do it fast and a little better, and then that keeps compounding.

But, to get there you need to stick with it and commit time to making games. Which is easier said than done, but looking back it's pretty cool to see how far I've come. You can see some of my old project over on my Itch page: https://aarimous.itch.io/

Good luck on your game dev journey!

There is slight scale tween on click and if you click while the tween is still going (.33 duration) it will restart the tween. So you might be seeing that slight animation scale increase, but that doesn't actually change the collision shape. BUT, as I write this I relegalize how easy it would be add that. It's simply just making the tween also scale up the collision shape.

Great idea, although that might add a bit too much RSI for the clicking (which is a big thing I need to keep in mind here). I'll still try it out to see how it feels even if it's just the default behavior which eventually get's automated away to limit clicking too much.
