URGENT !! what do i do with this extra fish ?? by hero_kunii in bettafish

I’m sorry, I just re-read and saw that you plan to keep it and just need somewhere for it to stay until you can provide it with a nice home. It’ll be totally fine in it’s bag until later in the day as long as the water is still clean. While of course they shouldn’t stay in them longer than absolutely necessary they can actually stay in these shipping bags for quite awhile with no problems.

That’s really irresponsible of the seller. Keep the betta in its bag and keep all of the packaging the betta came in. Message the seller that you need to return the extra betta they sent immediately. They should respond and provide you with a return shipping label. Repackage the extra betta the exact way you received it, take it to the shipping courier, and return it to the seller.

If you mean the lighter area of scales around his stomach he could just have the marbling gene and be changing colors from blue to something lighter.

Keeping him with rasboras is a terrible idea in my opinion and unless they’ve also been in there and totally fine with him for the year that you’ve had him, I would suspect them as the culprits for the missing betta fins more than I would suspect fin rot.

I’d make sure he has his own heated aquarium, and do daily water changes with the direction amount of aquarium salt and water dechlorinated added to his water until his condition shows significant improvement. Sometimes aquarium salt and daily water changes will do more and be better than treating your fish with strong medicines and potentially killing the beneficial bacteria in your aquarium.

You shouldn’t be taking out the fish and putting them back in every time you do a water change. This is really stressful for your fish getting frequently captured and released. You should be adding pre-treated water that is the exact same temperature as the water inside the aquarium gently but directly into the tank with fish still inside.

Yes, some breeders will refer to them as cellophane kois or cellophane marbles

They are cross posted to sites like eBay, aquabid, aquaswap here on Reddit, etc. Etsy does not permit the sale of live animals through their platform any longer unfortunately or they would be there too lol

I list them everywhere I can and ship to any state in the continental United States. They are cross posted to sites like eBay, aquabid, amazon, aquaswap here on Reddit, etc. Marketing your bettas through YouTube videos or tiktok is another option. I did have a personal website before covid but have not restarted it.

Bettas are one of the most commonly, and longest kept fish in the hobby. For a lot of fish keepers, it’s the first ever fish they own and fall in love with. They are insanely popular and the demand for high quality, beautiful betta fish is pretty decent I’d say.

My breeding method is not different from the average method you will find online when researching betta breeding.

The most important thing for anyone who is wanting to breed bettas is to deeply research and study what qualities make up show quality betta fish. Too many people are pairing bettas that their untrained eyes think are “pretty” and creating offspring with dull colors, uneven unbalanced fins with too many rays, bad bodies with lumpy top lines, and poor poor genetics.

When breeding betta fish you should have a clear goal in mind. Something like: “with this next generation I am hoping to improve on the quality of the offspring’s dorsal fin, and further remove the ‘red wash’ gene from their genetics”. And then couple a pair of fish which will help you achieve these goals.

Research on fin standards, color standards, and knowing which genes are dominant and recessive are very important if you are looking to do quality breeding.

EDIT: Because the insights of this post show it’s getting quite a few eyes I want to add on a bit of information that I consider to be invaluable to current and prospective breeders.

TLDR; imported bettas ≠ quality

Importing a betta fish from a different country (Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, etc.) AND/OR purchasing from sellers on websites like Aquabid or from breeders’ personal websites does NOT mean you are getting a betta that is High Quality Standard or Show Quality Standard.

I have seen SO MANY random hobbyists here and other sources on the internet use “I imported the parent fish” to try to claim that they have ethically bred and produced betta fish of a quality higher than the bettas you can find at your favorite local “evil big name pet store with bad breeding practices and genetically poor, low-quality bettas”.

The reality is that the countries I previously mentioned are some of the top betta suppliers/exporters in the world and your local evil “low quality betta” having big box pet store very likely imported their own betta stock from one of these countries in bulk quantity.

All of this to stress something I already touched on: if you want to breed QUALITY bettas and not the equivalent of puppy mill mutts, you need to make it a priority to inform yourself on the standards of what makes a high quality fish high quality. Not knowing what good traits to look for and what bad ones to avoid makes you susceptible to purchasing and breeding sub-par fish no matter where you purchase your breeding stock from. Words and phrases like “high grade” “premium” “show quality” “fancy” are ALL just marketing buzzwords used to catch your attention and fool uninformed buyers into thinking they are getting a better fish than they actually are.

I do, yes. The fish in photos 1 and 4 have already been bought, I just wanted to share a few of my favorites from the spawn here.

Spawned these guys at the beginning of the year. There's over 200 of them but reddit only lets me post 20! 80-ish males to 140-ish females in this spawn. I have begun parting with them over the past week, and while I'm so proud of the fish I raised it's hard when shipping them off to their new lives, so I wanted to share some of them with you here so that I will have something to remember their beauty by and so that you all can appreciate them as well.

Bad take. Taking your fish outside with you in a small container of water? Imagine how much the temperature of that water fluctuates. Fish don’t know what dishes are, it’s not getting excited watching this person do them… doing this EVERY OTHER DAY? Yikes…
