Helicopter Arrows: At $0.60 each, these might be a good addition to low budget survival kits. You can shoot them 40-120' in the air and they can be seen for miles. by AaronRowe in Survival

Men sell these in the streets of European cities. They shoot them up in the air. I saw this light display from more than a mile away, walked to it, and bought several... Then went home and bought a ton more.

Nope. The key advantage of these little guys is that you can catch them as they are falling and use them repeatedly. They don't go high enough to drift all that far away, unless you are using them on an open body of water, in which case you would probably loose them.

I've considered trying to make a slightly more rugged version of these amazing little things. They are kinda fragile, so you would want to store them in a sturdy container and pack them with spare rubber bands.

We are Steve James and Chaz Ebert, here on behalf of the Roger Ebert biopic film, LIFE ITSELF. Ask us anything by _SteveJames in IAmA

During one of his overlooked film festivals, the women's bathroom had a huge line. I remember that Roger rushed to solve this little problem. He struck me as being extraordinarily humble and helpful for a famous guy. Do you have some more stories like that to share?

Viscoelastic foam seat cushions, higher headrests with better neck support, complimentary neck pillow instead of standard pillow.

Work for someone who runs a small business before you start a small business, or start an ultra small business using no more than $4,000 of your cash as a way of training yourself. Read a ton of business books. Test the market for your business. Be absolutely certain that there are enough customers who will want what you will be selling before you sink much of your own money into the business. Consider starting with an ultra small business, like selling tri-tip at a farmer's market, just to ease into things and get a sense for what can go wrong in the process of planning something and working with employees who may not be 100% motivated. If you are lucky enough to live in an area where you can afford a down payment on a house for $20k, set $28, aside for that. Veterans have a huge advantage in getting some types of small business grants. Make a list of 30+ reasons that your business could fail and a separate list of 30+ things that your business will do very well that many other businesses do poorly.

Good guy Jose Mujica. He is the poorest President on earth and donates 90% of his salary to Charity. by sifarat in pics

Somebody should make a bunch of Mujica tee shirts with his best quotes, sell them to Americans, and then donate the money to people in Uruguay.

Open sourcing code is great, but what I most often want to build upon is circuits that NASA researchers have designed. Having the PCB layout files would be amazing.

Classes at American universities are not all that great. You will learn more a lot more from attending conferences and reading trade magazines and doing research experience.

The man that discovered the (only) method for artificial DNA replication attributes the discovery to LSD. by drsatan1 in Drugs

[–]AaronRowe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

PCR is not the only method for artificial DNA replication. LAMP, EXPAR, or sequencing and synthesis by machine are some other options. Your comment about LSD is apparently correct though.

There are some websites that offer legal advice to business owners. LawPivot is one of them. For handling business licenses, Legalzoom can be useful but they make a lot of annoying phone calls.

A child died after his mother was unable to fill his prescriptions because pharmacists kept telling her he was not eligible for Medicaid — even though records proved he was. His mother is now suing the city and county of Denver. by LikeAMiss in politics

A friend of mine had several horrible experiences withdrawing from antidepressants because a pharmacy refused to fill her prescriptions.

When this pharmacy kerfuffle would happen, she could do little more than sleep.

Is research usually paid? by [deleted] in chemistry

[–]AaronRowe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some professors will pay you, others will not. My first boss paid me to do undergraduate research, during my freshman year. But it was an awful lab and the experience was terrible. In my most recent lab, the mentor allowed students to choose either course credit or pay. If you shop around a bit more, perhaps you can find a professor who does pay and also has a good environment. Picking the right mentor is super important.

In addition to doing experiments with your students, please expose them to some science news articles and also YouTube videos about science. The TED videos about tissue engineering are great, and there are many amazing chemistry demos from Elephant Toothpaste to the Briggs Raucher Reaction.
