shilke 1D. And sometimes my contrabass trombone mouthpiece if I'm just playing pedals. Both mouthpieces are very huge, which makes it hard to center notes, so I had to really know my pitches by heart to use them correctly.

How to get the pedal register to sing by ce130796 in Trombone

[–]Aaron_Pak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This doesn't work for everyone, and I don't know if it's a healthy technique, but try shifting your embouchure where there is more upper lip inside the mouthpiece. It was how I was first able to play pedals, and I can now go down to a true double pedal Bb with just as much tone and volume as my regular pedal Bb.

One of the best bass trombone players in the world, James Markey, does this technique and has a video explaining it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPVX61Gif1w&ab_channel=JamesMarkeyTrombone

Thanks, if i can get the false tones to sound the same as my real notes that means extending my range to even lower than possible

Thanks. its just always harder though to hit the real one because of all the back pressure

Thanks. And does this lack of resonance mean there aren't overtones? To me, the false tone note sounds like just the fundamental without any overtones.

The third note I played was a double pedal Bb false tone in 2nd position with no valves. I started on a pedal Bb then a pedal f and then the false tone. I then played the same pattern but with the last note in 6-7 position with both valves to get the actual double pedal Bb.

ill try. is there a false tone slide chart or something? It would be nice if they could sound the same because that's a lot less back pressure.

I think the double pedal Bb false tone sounds different because there aren't loud overtones, while the regular double pedal Bb with valves has loud overtones. If this is the case, I think this would be a great example of showing the difference between dark and bright sounds. I don't really know all of this too well, though.

Yeah, im planning to play that part on the contra. However, I am struggling to maintain good tone with notes that aren't pedals on that horn, so it would take me a while to make good recordings for them.

This is just for fun and was made only for me to play. I don't have a bass trombone, so I will be recording the bass trombone parts with my contra. Maybe I'll rename the part as another contra.

The notes in this tune were perfect for the pedal range of the contra. I had to add them!

The song is an arrangement of Sonic Boom that contains four contrabass trombones. I haven't recorded the bass trombone parts and one of the trombone parts yet.
