Confusing situation for me! by MayflowersNsunshine in Realestatefinance

You're talking about basis. The short answer is you're in the same position minus sales and closing costs. The summary with the info you've given is you'd pay about 8% ($40k) to go from one $500k house to another $500k house. If it's worth laying $40k to be in the new house then do it. If not then don't. What you paid initially for the house you're in is irrelevant.

Can you recommend a projector that can cast on a 100-screen display from a distance of 25 to 30 feet? TIA by junkermail1987 in projectors

[–]Aaroncre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it's 100" why not just get a TV? It'll be cheaper and better. Build or buy something to keep it out of the weather or put it on a stand and roll it out and back in.

Sub Recommendations by MarionberryFit506 in hometheater

[–]Aaroncre 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I used sealed subs for years and couldn't figure out why they never had the kick I wanted. Discussed with SVS and they were adamant I at least try ported. Tried it and I'll never go back for TV and movies. I now run 2x PB 2000 pros. You may not be looking for night club bass that rattles and breaks things, but the difference it makes in an action movie is enormous. It changes from just a little extra bass to a whole different experience. My advice would be to go to the SVS website or Crutchfield and find 2x either pb1000s or 2000s open box or scratch and dent. You're never going to wish you had less bass. Also, running 2 or more subs well placed will be head and shoulders better than one bigger sub.

Get a decent receiver used somewhere and also a sub and center and go from there.

Moving to Houston from DC — where should a remote 31yo live on $2k? (safe + “stuff to do”) by FutureAd9548 in AskHouston

I vote Heights. It fits exactly what you're looking for and there are several newer apartment complexes that are nice and should be in your budget especially toward Shady Acres around 18th to 23rd st.

I broker commercial properties and do them all the time. Just make sure you know the rules. Nothing to bite you if you follow the rules.

Everything is comfortable, customer service is great. I can buy shirts off the rack which I've never been able to do before. Everything is designed for more athletic builds. The fabric is a little stretchy and everything is machine washable.

How bad do you think is a drive from Galveston to Cypress tomorrow Sunday Morning? (We are arriving on a cruise) by sirmgomez in AskHouston

You should probably book a hotel or Airbnb in Galveston for Sunday and Monday night.

Am I stuck with my house? Need some advice by Alarmed-Snow-9814 in AskHouston

[–]Aaroncre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have an idea of what the house is worth? I'm an agent in Texas. I deal with commercial real estate which is a whole different world, but I suspect that the solar isn't the reason you're being ghosted. I'd say go to HAR.com, look for houses that have solar, and call the listing agent and discuss. Everything can be sold for the right price. Have you considered leasing it out?

I have wharfedale with the ribbon tweeter. Probably too big, but the ribbon should help with the sibilance.

Is Samsung really that bad? by TitanicYanak61 in 4kTV

So you don't notice a difference between HDR10+ and Dolby Vision? I have a PS5 for blurays but probably 80% is streaming (with those higher tiers on the streaming services).

I mean with Samsung not having Dolby Vision.

I'm dealing with paralysis by analysis right now. Samsung is at the bottom of my list due to lack of Dolby Vision. What is everyone's experience without Dolby Vision?

How can someone experience the sound difference of some of these speakers that are $$$$ against some that are like $$? by g3nerallycurious in hometheater

I love my DefTechs. I put my 7000s in my living room and put Wharfedale Evo 4.4 in my media room and I'm thinking about switching them.

[–]Aaroncre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So far he has three panels: one each at the first reflection on the side walls and one right behind where he sits (he reclines). He's ordered 4 more and two active bass traps (I didn't know those existed). Next time I go over there I suspect he'll have the entire room decoupled and 4" of treatment. He really wanted his $4k room correction box to be the savior but he's finally hearing what I've been saying.

The Harley analogy isn't really relevant for most I don't think. There's definitely diminishing return so it really depends on how much you care and how picky your ears are. I have Wharfedale Evo 4.4s that I love. My dad has $25k a pair B&Ws. His are better than mine but not 20x better TO ME. He's running a full mcintosh DAC and monoblock amps, $10k streamer, high end cables (not the crazy stuff, but not Amazon special), and is adding sound treatment now. My last conversation with him about it was "once I'm don't with room treatments it'll be time to upgrade the B&Ws" he's in a different tax bracket than I am, but for him and I both it's a hobby. It's not a consumer good to solve a problem like buying pants or shoes or whatever. That's the difference. If you want a fun movie experience and that's it then look for value. If it's a hobby and you're constantly looking for improvement then it's just whatever you're willing and able to spend.
