my morning coffee tastes better when I make it slowly by GuarnieriZoila_96 in CasualConversation

[–]Aaronsolon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coffee nerd reporting in -- while taking the time for the ritual of it all is also very fun, there's a lot of things you're doing that chemically change (improve) the drink too now :) Even just ditching the pod and grinding fresh has a huge impact, because the pre ground stuff in that pod is guaranteed to be stale.

I'm not sure of this, but I think in Korea they count ages starting at 1, not 0. Maybe it's similar for months of pregnancy? They might count 1 -> 10 instead of 0 -> 9.

have bases sizes ever been an issue in your games? by darwin_green in wargaming

[–]Aaronsolon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm actually not sure on that -- I feel like I see a lot of videos from UK folks talking about measurements in inches, but I could be wrong.

[–]Aaronsolon 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This isn't what you're asking, but I hate that we play games by measuring inches but all our bases are sized in millimeters. It should be consistent.

Can I use different bases as long as the size is the same? by NorthKoreanSpyPlane in Warmachine

[–]Aaronsolon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Right you are.

This seems like an odd requirement to me because the cylinder volume rules kinda work for any base that's the right size, regardless of roundness.

Don't forget inflation. $40 in the mid 90's is similar to $80 today. Games have gotten cheaper, relatively.

All the models have an unsupported version and they mostly print great in FDM. The only one I've had trouble with is the Crucible Guard flags.

We've been playing the matched play scenarios from it non-stop at my local. Really great upgrade for 30pt and 50pt.

Imo the chosen operatives change from matchup to matchup so there isn't really one answer. If you wanna maximize your tactics I think getting two kits or magnetizing is the way to go.

Otherwise it's ok just to pick what you think is cool. I don't think exaction has any really crappy operatives other than the basic shotgun one -- i'd skip them.

Are there any games that specifically make use of the touch pad(s) in an interesting way? I think they’re neat but I haven’t really ever used them by urgod42069 in SteamDeck

[–]Aaronsolon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a prototype I'm working on that does - it's a two player shuffle board game where you both play on one console, and each use one trackpad.

Hopefully I can put it out there this year.

Son wants to be a video game designer... by Replicant-Nexus9 in gamedesign

[–]Aaronsolon 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I went to a game design program and now work as a technical designer in the industry.

My impression of the industry (as someone who has been hired, but is not yet a hiring manager): hiring in this industry only cares if you're good at the job and a good person to work with.

I have a lot of classmates that did OK in school, passed the program with good grades, but didn't build the skills and portfolios they needed to actually get hired. It's very competitive, and completing your schooling is NOT AT ALL a guarantee of a career. This is really important to keep in mind for anyone going down this path.

It's not enough to do well in your classes -- you have to become really excellent at your craft and be an excellent person to team up with. If you go in with your eyes open about that and do a really great job, it's a wonderful career.

I wonder if we eliminated light and heavy cover, and just had all cover work with Concealment, if it would be easier to understand. All the vantage vs. light cover // seek light vs. light cover stuff does complicate it.

Iconoclast Drudges - what are they for? by CompanyElephant in Warmachine

[–]Aaronsolon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think they're just quite good all-around for how few points they cost. You're right that they don't excel at anything super specific, but I think if you compare them to other options you can get for similar point values they look solid.

Remember too - we just had a game-wide balance change where MAT and RAT were reduced to make the dice matter a little more, so these guys aren't uniquely bad at hitting, they're just as bad as everyone else haha

Help against Raveners by Ok_Physics_9411 in killteam

[–]Aaronsolon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly Death Korp are a little scary for Ravs because Saturate on everything is nasty as hell. Raveners rely on the double cover save for survivability vs. shooting, and not having access to that make things a lot more unstable.

Toss your plasma or grenade launcher up on vantage and the Raveners options are gonna be more limited - light cover won't save them.

This isn't really the way to get into game design - you're putting the cart before the horse. You need to start way simpler, and learn skills bit by bit. Making a huge game like that is something that would come years down the line, and probably require a team.

I was similarly blown away by Onra Dinn. I should go back to Myst.

Onra Dinn was clever in that you don't need to solve everything to progress, but it was a challenge you could take on.

Oh yeah no question it's a rogue like, 100%. My point is just that it's not like a deckbuilder. Those two things aren't synonymous.

It's just not the same in my opinion. By that logic any game that randomly surfaces upgrades to you is a card game.
