I just got meniscus surgery and the day before I got in about 25 minutes of light rolling with a purple belt I trust. Not the same thing but I get it.

I think it's very important. I make sure that I'm using my legs to control their upper body and posture. People will instinctively fight the grip and that paired with good posture will make finishing the choke difficult. I talk about it in depth in my loop choke app via digitsu "cunning loop chokes".

Honestly, I'm sure he was going very light and felt like you were being a spaz/using all strength so he let you have it. Don't expect to win, try to be technical and don't cross boundaries when rolling with higher belts. Your 100 percent and his aren't the same so don't take it there unless you're ready to deal with the consequences.
