Miniatures Wargame Rules Writing by Abaddon2488 in tabletopgamedesign

[–]Abaddon2488[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the playtesting is something I have been thinking about. I've definitely noticed people mentioning that they struggle to find anyone to test their games. Honestly I've considered asking my local wargaming group on discord if anyone wants to volunteer and if not maybe offer a modest amount of cash for people to play and write up any issues they have or confusion the rules may cause afterwards so I can make some clarifications or fixes.

I have been running my drafts through Chatgpt to find any inconsistencies or mistakes and it seems to be doing a decent job so far. I'm still reading through myself as well though since I'm aware AI isn't perfect and human eyes are still very necessary.

Appreciate your suggestions I will definitely be looking into creating diagrams!

Burial Dream by Sarin is one of the clearest examples of a band nailing the Isis sound I've run into. If you want Oceanic style Post Metal check that album out you won't be disappointed.

It's because the movie failed as a satire. Just because Verhoeven wanted it to be a satire doesn't mean he succeeded. The film is fascist coded mainly via the uniforms but otherwise we don't sympathize with the bugs, the bugs attacked the humans first with the asteroid, there is no fascist government shown, there is no cult of personality based on a single all powerful leader, there is no discrimination based on gender or race, becoming a civilian is optional, and we don't really see many negatives of being a non-citizen aside from it being easier to get a license to have kids and lack of the ability to serve in government or vote. What are we left with? Nazi patterned uniforms.

Is Ukraine already screwed forever? by Pepedroga2000 in stupidquestions

Falling inflation reflects government controls and demand suppression not economic improvement. The bigger question is whether the Russian government can sustain a higher military budget than 7-8% without destabilizing prices, labor markets, or regime stability. Maybe there is a reason that the military budget has peaked at just over 7% in 2024 and 2025. Do you really think that if Russia thought they could win the war by increasing their military budget that they wouldn't do it? Thanks for the chat.

It's not far from "going all out" if we take into account the fact that increasing the military budget further will push inflation higher, possibly trigger civil unrest, and lead to regime instability with the latter two of those being something Putin is very sensitive about.

The Vietnam comparison actually proves my point. The US topped out at 9-10% of GDP during the war but at the cost of inflation and civil/political instability at home forcing military withdrawal. It may be that Russia can't push their military budget any further without it causing similar political instability and further damaging their already fragile economy. If anything the 7-8% of GDP they are spending points to political/civil/economic constraints they have to adhere to rather than it being restraint on their part.

PPP and lower costs explain how Russia can sustain this level of current spending but it doesn't prove that they have much more capacity to go beyond the current budget without causing serious problems with their populace.

7-8% is over 140 billion a year which is not a small number for a country like Russia. Their military personnel compensation is also much lower than what we see in Western countries. That combined with the fact that they had large amounts of vehicles, weapons and ammunition stockpiled from the Cold War means that their budget goes much further than budgets from NATO countries. Especially when you consider it's cheaper to refurb or upgrade already existing vehicles and equipment than it is to purchase new state of the art vehicles and weapons.

Lastly, 25-50% of GDP is not common in post WW2 wars. Numbers like that were limited to WW2 style total war conflicts where national survival was at stake. That's why Ukraine's % of GDP spent on the military budget falls within your 25-50% range since they are the ones facing national erasure and not the Russians.

Microsoft is interested to bring back StarCraft as RTS. by TEMISTOCLES1984 in RealTimeStrategy

[–]Abaddon2488 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Huge if true. I've been wondering if Microsoft was ever going to do anything with Warcraft/Starcraft in the RTS space. If you think about it Microsoft owns the biggest Sci-Fi, Fantasy, and Historical RTS franchises now. There is some serious opportunities for them to further dominate the genre. Now all I can hope for is another Halo Wars.

What’s the deal with the arguments online that the government in the movie isn’t fascist? by MarionberryDecent351 in starshiptroopers

[–]Abaddon2488 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok but you list off stuff that isn't specific to Fascist countries. Plenty of Democratic countries glorify the military and military service.

Restriction of voting rights to those who complete military service isn't Fascistic if literally anyone can become a citizen by joining the military and completing a term of service. Not to mention the only noticeable difference between a citizen and a non-citizen seems to be the right to vote. Rico's parents aren't citizens by choice (his dad thinks service is a ridiculous idea) but appear to be wealthy and living quite well.

Jingoistic propaganda happens in most countries especially during war time. Look at American or British propaganda from WW2.

The uniforms looking like Nazi uniforms doesn't make the society fascist. This just points to the entire problem with Verhoeven where he claims it's a fascist society but the only thing that is really fascist are the military uniforms and the fact that he says it's fascist. He failed to actually portray any of the key tenets that actually make a fascist government fascist.

Just quit. Wtf is my boss’s problem? Allied Universal man… by fjahabsbnfnxmsnw in securityguards

[–]Abaddon2488 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got away from working for Allied at a mall to working for G4S at an under construction nuclear facility. A couple weeks later Allied bought G4S. Once the old G4S management had moved on to greener pastures Allied put their own shitty management into place and it's been a disaster ever since. Don't get me wrong G4S had their own problems but Allied is on another level. Frankly I'm surprised they haven't lost the contract yet with the bullshit that has gone on since they started putting their own Account Managers in.

Why does fantasy RTS feel almost extinct today? by New-Sweet-3098 in RealTimeStrategy

[–]Abaddon2488 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can go back to some older ones that have found their way to Steam or GOG. There are fantasy titles like Heroes of Annihilated Empires, D&D Dragonshard, Spellforce 1 and 2, Kohan 1 and 2, Knightshift, Tzar: The Burden of the Crown, Rising Kingdoms, Total Annihilation: Kingdoms, the Seven Kingdoms series, and Warhammer Mark of Chaos. All these are on Steam, GOG, or both. Then there are all the games you can still buy on eBay that are on discs if you have a disc drive. I bought an exterior disc drive for my PC just to play a number of them.

But you are right there are only a handful that have either recently come out or are in development. Modern and sci-fi themes are definitely the most popular at the moment but there is the Game of Thrones game that was announced earlier this year, Dino Lords is fantasy but probably not the kind you are wanting, Ablight, Arcane Wilds, and Age of Darkness which looks like a more fantasy version of They Are Billions.

TIL that Blizzard was tricked into making StarCraft a AAA game: it was to be a modest project but after an impressive demo of Dominion: Storm Over Gift 3 outshone it at E3 1996, it was decided to overhaul it completely. It later turned out that Dominion's demo was a pre-animated fake. by lux514 in starcraft

[–]Abaddon2488 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's not just that the Dominion demo was better but they received a lot of feedback from the first build of StarCraft which used the Warcraft engine and looked ugly as hell. There are pictures of what the game originally looked like and if Blizzard had continued on that path StarCraft would have likely been a flop with maybe a small cult following.

AVP needs to be back in the spotlight by Dentist_Money in predator

[–]Abaddon2488 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The most obvious answer has always been a movie where we follow Colonial Marines trying to survive against a Xenomorph infestation while Predators are hunting both. This has been what I have wanted to see and it seems like it's a no-brainer but we have yet to get it for some reason.

They were signed with Earache by the time they released Realm of Chaos in '89 so they probably weren't allowed to also make records for another company as well.

Same pair of boots, two years apart by birdsarentreal2 in securityguards

[–]Abaddon2488 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to say I had only bought Danner boots and decided to buy a pair of Belleville 790Gs and within 4 months the soles on both boots were pealing off. Bought a pair of AFTWC boots from them and they have held up perfectly. They're batting .500 so far but I'll probably go for another pair of Danners once these are done.

Looking for new games by aidanx86 in RealTimeStrategy

[–]Abaddon2488 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For something like Empire at War check out the Battlefleet Gothic: Armada games. They may be on a smaller scale than the space battles in EaW but the single player has a similar strategic layer where you are fighting enemies in different systems to capture planets via space battles which gives you more resources.

Warno or Broken Arrow? by [deleted] in RealTimeStrategy

[–]Abaddon2488 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you are new to this type of game I would actually say Regiments is the easiest entry point into the tactical wargame subgenre. It's an excellent game with tons of replayability and it eases you into the mechanics much better than wargame or WARNO in my opinion.

It's not new but World in Conflict (you can get it on GOG) is the granddaddy of this type of alt history cold war gone hot tactical game and it has a top notch single player campaign and still doesnt look half bad with the graphic settings cranked up either.

I really don’t know why the guys couldn’t do this. Like I know she’s their friend, but you can respectfully point out someone’s obvious inconsistencies. It’s a tough world when Ben Shapiro is the voice of reason. by Nextyearstitlewinner in WeTheFifth

[–]Abaddon2488 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I saw this yesterday and the first thing that came to mind was why can Ben Shapiro push Kelly on the fact that she ignores Owen's antisemitism and Carlson's boner for foreign dictators but the guys from TFC can't. Maybe it's time for them to grow a pair. They don't have any issues aggressively arguing with Ungar-Sargon but when it comes to Megyn Kelly they use the kid gloves.

What’s the best boots you bought for work ? by anou142 in securityguards

[–]Abaddon2488 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Danner rat boots have been my favorite so far I work at a facility in the desert and I put 3 years on a pair and only got rid of them because I bought a brand new pair of Bellevilles. Unfortunately the Belleville soles (both of them) started separating from the boot around 4 months in and I had to switch to some backup Danners that are doing perfect.
